Foxgloves. Hollyhocks. Climbing roses.

Sweet peas

Hopefully not a foxglove, slightly toxic

YoBetty · 18/06/2026 22:40

Have you uploaded a photo because I can't see anything.

It’s under review, I don’t know why it’s taking so long to upload

@SeasideDaisy Is it the red thing in your right hand? I wonder if it's the same as what's in the border behind which look like dahlias

corlan · 18/06/2026 23:02

I'm going to say geranium but it's really hard to tell from the photo

crackofdoom · 18/06/2026 23:04

It's difficult to tell, but it looks like a dahlia, and so do the flowers in the background.

LittleGreenDragons · 18/06/2026 23:04

No idea OP, I can't decide if the flower is fuzzy or whether it's the photograph. Can you describe it?

Colour?
Multiple layers of small petals like a dahlia or lots of small petals like a daisy? Larger petals like a rose?
Size of flower head?
Can you recall if there was a scent?

DierdreDaphne · 18/06/2026 23:05

Dahlias are a classic "old fashioned" garden flower - I'd say it was either a dahlia or a Carnation.. or, possibly a chrysanthemum but they are autumn flowers and have leafier stems as a rule. All three definitely come in a strong deep red (as well as numerous other colours)

The photo is from 1982, so pretty sure she survived.

No idea on the flower though. My first thought was calendula, but the flowers in the boarder don't look like it.

ExOptimist · 18/06/2026 23:10

Looks like a carnation.

WaltWitmanItIs · 18/06/2026 23:15

I’d say a carnation too. Or possibly a ‘pink’ (dianthus) if the photo colour is off a bit (these are easy to grow!).

BeaLola · 18/06/2026 23:18

My first thought was dahlia

Sherunswithwolves · 18/06/2026 23:18

I think the larger clump is of lilies, and there's perhaps a small rose bush too. So possibly a rose in your hand. Although I did wonder about a carnation.

BeaLola · 18/06/2026 23:24

Dahlias come in various different types - if you are thinking of inspiration look on the Crocus website as their pictures are usually good

Dahlia 'Arabian Night' - decorative dahlia

Sumptuous, wine-red flowers

YoBetty · 18/06/2026 23:35

I think those orangey flowers in the flower bed in the background are antirrhinums aka snapdragons, but the thing in your hand doesn't resemble that. Could possibly be a dark coloured variety of French marigold. Everybody used to grow those.

This.

You can see them in the background. 100% a dahlia

Viviennemary · 18/06/2026 23:44

The photo is so fuzzy its impossible to tell what flowers they are. Can hardly even see the flower.

Frostynoman · 19/06/2026 00:05

Carnation

SeasideDaisy · 19/06/2026 06:56

Thanks all!!

Orange Dahlia. Hence the Pom Pom

DidntLikeTheEnding · 19/06/2026 07:47

Is there no-one in real life you can ask? If I said to my mum, hey what were those red flowers that Granny used to grow, she could probably tell me!

EnjoythemoneyJane · 19/06/2026 08:14

Definitely dahlias OP. They’re amazing, such a huge variety of shapes and colours, as @BeaLola said, and they make absolutely gorgeous cut flowers. There’s an American guy on insta who did a series where he planted a different variety for every day of the year and showcased them one by one!
