@SeasideDaisy Is it the red thing in your right hand? I wonder if it's the same as what's in the border behind which look like dahlias

Yes I agree the way the flowers are angled and look on the plant I would say it's a short dahlia, very popular in the 80s too. And the flower matches what the OP is holding. I seem remember lots of dahlia competitions in the local allotment society 🤣

I think it’s come from the plants behind you, late summer looking at the grass so chrysanthemums or dahlias and foliage is not dahlias. Garden doesn’t look like a plantsman’s garden so something easily available at the time.
In conclusion a red chrysanthemum of that era with relatively compact growth and bronze foliage would be Chrysanthemum’Ruby Mound’ 45cm hight and spread.

Giving second consideration to the obvious drought stunting the foliage and the colours not being true, second guess Dahlia ‘David Howard’.

Carnations or a rose?

OP upload your photo to Gemini and ask it to restore it so that you can see the flower. It can work miracles and probably even tell you what the flowers are. (I've done this with photos so faded you can barely see the detail and now have photos which look like they were taken very recently.)

It's difficult to tell, but it looks like a dahlia, and so do the flowers in the background.

I thought the same

BreatheAndFocus · Today 09:19

Looks like a dahlia to me too.

Another vote for a dahlia. There are loads of types, I have someone living nearby who grows a rainbow of them (just dahlias in a small garden) and it looks gorgeous. She invites donations for bunches in buckets when they're all out.

I do nostalgic things like you’re planning @SeasideDaisy what a sweet idea I try remembered foods/scents/products/books/home items mine don’t always work out so I hope yours do 🙏🏽

Is there no-one in real life you can ask? If I said to my mum, hey what were those red flowers that Granny used to grow, she could probably tell me!

No there isn’t anyone.

Orange Dahlia. Hence the Pom Pom

I’m going to get some of these for sure, beautiful.

Dahlia, zinnia, chrysanthemum

Probably not a rose, peony, or sunflower

changedusername190 · Today 14:20

Sweet Williams?

BelleEpoque27 · Today 14:30

I wonder if it might be a short double zinnia? The foliage looks more zinnia-like than dahlia. But it could easily be a dahlia too.

Is it a triffid...?
