Location tracker without smartphone?

So with the social media ban and now our daughter’s new school has banned smartphones, how do we track the kids ? She’s 11 and we’ve used life360. Separate trackers only locate when nearby a smartphone so not accurate. Anyone have experience of a decent and reliable tracker please?

I think, if I lived in an area where there was a high child abduction or crime rate then I'd want to track my child. Or if they were going on a trip somewhere without me. I'd probably choose some sort of smartwatch as it's less likely to be left somewhere but as far as I know, these need a linked phone within a certain distance to transmit as they use the phone's wifi/mobile data connection.

I know there are personal/portable locator beacons that hikers use when there's no phone signal (use GPS and satellite) but they can be pricey and usually have a subscription fee but they do rely on the person pressing a button to give a spot location rather than just tracking in the background. They don't need a mobile phone.

Can you not raise this concern with the school if it's important to you @LBuLisa ?

Surely if a school bans phones, they are not going to let them have a smart watch.
