Has anybody reversed prediabetes?

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:24

Would anybody be willing to share what they did?

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed & don't know where to start really.

I have an appointment with the GP nurse but not for 5 weeks.

Yes, with Mounjaro. My blood sugar levels were well within normal after 5 weeks. I’ve lost a third of my body weight now and my blood sugar is nice and low.

twohotwaterbottles · 27/04/2026 19:38

Cut down massively on processed food and look at portion sizes. Eat lots of fruit and veg and protein. Job done. If you're not sure get one of Joe Wick's books Lean in 15 and change what you eat and how much. Use a calorie tracker (my fitness pal is good) and research your required daily calories and stick to it. It takes effort but you'll get used to it then it will become normal for you. Good luck.

I appreciate this does not work for everyone depending on health/commitmenys but my partner did by cleaning up his diet by cutting out junk food/sugar and seriously upping the amount or exercise he was doing by walking. He is retired and was basically eating rubbish and hardly moving before. He has maintained this for 3 years now and I’m so proud of him.

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:42

ShrankLastWinter That's amazing. Well done! Did you get them from the GP?

Thank you twohotwaterbottles I'm finding the info online quite conflicting.

The thing that I'm most worried about is what to eat with the kids (which probably sounds silly) but breakfast/when we have a picnic/go to the cinema, the foods that I (we) eat then are all wrong.

Yes! I never thought I would be able to. I cut refined sugar, got a blood testing kit to see which foods make my sugar spike (eg rice). Went low carb. I found the Glucose Goddess and Michael Moseley books helpful.

You can do this!

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:44

That's great user1471550643. Did he get regular blood tests & then the levels just went down?

I'm terrified by the blood tests, I'm imagining trying really hard, then having a blood test & they say that I did that for nothing & that I'm fully diabetic now.

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:47

Ragamuffin8 How long did it take? Where you having regular blood tests?
I suppose a blood testing kit is expensive? Refined sugar is in all cakes, biscuits, white bread & pasta?

Would anybody share their daily diet on here?

My FiL
He can’t cook and lives quite remotely. MiL cooked exactly the recommended diet, he had no real oppurtunity to nip out for a Kit Kat, and FiL started walking up to 5 miles every day.

MrsBucketHat · 27/04/2026 19:50

Yes, my mum. She’s lost over a stone in the last 4 and a bit months. Cut out processed foods, done regular walking and cycling.

Hi from memory, I think he had a blood test about 3 months in. I stopped buying biscuits! Cakes etc for home and substituted with fruit and low sugar/fat foods.

I would love to have the answer. I lost a lot of weight through having a bug and my blood sugar dropped a lot. Unfortunately I have put it back on and more due to being told to reduce the thyroxine I take for an underachieve thyroid. Reducing the dose has made me feel dreadful and I am going back to the original dose. I just wish I wasn't feeling so absolutely awful. I dread to think what my blood sugar is now. I ordered Monjaro in Dec and it's still in the fridge because the instructions on how to use it scare me to death and so do the possible side effects. I have reached the point now though where I am absolutely desperate.

I stopped having porridge for breakfast, cut out jam and marmalade, and avoid all sugar like the plague. I eat a very healthy diet, but obviously I am still eating too much and not moving enough. I feel incredibly despondent about it all. I should cut out all bread but still have sourdough with scrambled eggs sometimes for breakfast, and the odd scone with soup for lunch. I know I should cut those out too, but it feels like life has no enjoyment anymore.

LaurenBacal · 27/04/2026 19:55

I also have been swimming three times a week and walking in between. Still a stone up on this time last year and feeling dreadful.

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:59

LaurenBacal You are doing really well. But I am sorry that it's all so hard for you, I understand what you are saying. Thank you for sharing your story on here.

Thank you everybody for the posts. Really helpful.

My elderly father reversed his Type 2 diabetes by cooking from scratch and reducing carbs. He still had a biscuit or small piece of cake but at the end of a meal. He had most of his calories through protein and vegetables, having porridge for breakfast. He dramatically cut down bread and potatoes. I think the key was that he didn’t eat much in the way of processed food and didn’t drink alcohol due to his medication. Drinks were water, tea and s-free squash. He also stopped snacking but had three decent meals a day.

I hear you. There's so much advice. And yes children make everything that bit more complicated. Generally speaking if you lose some weight the blood tests will head in the right direction so perhaps to start with don't overthink it all too much. Cut out processed food and eat better quality food. And check your calorie intake. It's surprisingly easy to over eat calorie wise. And as another poster has said, up your activity if you can. If you go on picnics with your kids just prepare accordingly. So don't have the usual crisis or a sausage roll or quiche etc. Substitute for you with a healthier choice. A nice sandwich. Fruit. Etc. I take my kids to the cinema and I'll take a box of raspberries for me. Or a sandwich and a mini flask of tea. Anything to stop me wanting to fire down sweets etc really. Forward planning will be your friend here. Doing it on the hoof is too hard 😊

twohotwaterbottles · 27/04/2026 20:01

Typo 'crisis'. I meant crisps. My autocorrect knows me well 🤣

Dontgoforward · 27/04/2026 20:03

My DGM did. She was told at her yearly check up and cut out all sugar except 2 biscuits a day with a cup of tea.

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 20:05

Thank you twohotwaterbottles Is plain popcorn alright? It's habit, I know, going to take some thinking to change habits.

I am feeling overwhelmed with it. Like diabetes is hanging over me waiting to get me if I eat one biscuit!

I'm hoping that if I cut out fizzy drinks for a start, that will help? I used to drink 8 cups of water a day & a small bottle of fizzy at night... Now it's more like 2 cups of water & a large bottle of fizzy through each day (I know. Please don't judge)

My grandma got my granddad's full blown type II diabetes into remission. She swore by calculating "glycaemic load" (as opposed to glycaemic index) and keeping it low. Basically that you need to focus on keeping volumes low as well as choosing things with less sugar. So e.g. it might be better to eat one square of chocolate than a big portion of potatoes because while the potatoes might be lower sugar per 100g, you will consume a lot more potatoes than if you only eat a square of chocolate.

SconehengeRevenge · 27/04/2026 20:08

I did.

I was 0.1 off being diabetic, and found BIWI's low carb boards on here.

I lost over a stone on her bootcamp and reversed the pre-diabetes completely.

What that woman has done for 000s on here is nothing short of incredible

mathanxiety · 27/04/2026 20:09

Yes, by keeping an honest food diary for a week and then cutting back to 1200 cals or lower, which I did by cutting out all non nutritious carbs and raising my veg intake.

I switched to brown rice, whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, white potatoes only if boiled or baked (not roasted or chips), added lots more salad greens, nuts, fish once a week, lots of green leafy and cruciferous veg (broccoli, etc), lean protein, non UPF peanut butter, whole grain bread. Also plain Greek yogurt with berries and a dab of honey and shivered almonds.

Lots of water.

Home made salad dressings (oil / vinegar, etc).

I cut out all sweets and desserts but kept a little dark chocolate every evening.

I also exercised whenever I could. Just walking and some hand weights at home.

mathanxiety · 27/04/2026 20:11

And eggs for breakfast...

tigertot64 · 27/04/2026 20:13

I reversed type 2 diabetes - lost 13 stones, cut carbs and calorie deficit diet, not easy but better than taking years off my life by having diabetes. Just take it a day at a time

Yes, plain popcorn is fine. But not a family size bag of it. Measure it into a teacup.

Do cut out the fizzy drinks, even those that are artificially sweetened. You can replace the fizz with sparkling water.
