Has anybody reversed prediabetes?

WinnerTakesAFall · 27/04/2026 19:24

Would anybody be willing to share what they did?

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed & don't know where to start really.

I have an appointment with the GP nurse but not for 5 weeks.

I was on statins that are known for increasing blood sugars, and no matter how sensible my diet, no fizzy drinks, low (brown) carbs only, the number kept creeping up. I changed to a different type of statins and took cinnamon supplement daily and carried on with the diet changes. That bought my sugars down from 45 to 41. Then a year later lost almost 5 stone on monjouro and now they are at 29.
My mum was pre diabetic and introduced me to cinnamon as it got her out of the pre range too.

Was it Ceylon cinnamon? Apparently it’s important to choose the correct type of cinnamon.

Other things to think about in addition to all the food suggestions:

Walking/being active for 20 minutes after you eat will stop your blood glucose rising so steeply.

Also look at your general health/lifestyle. High blood glucose can also be associated with stress and your body staying in a constant state of fight-or-flight where it needs glucose in the blood. Getting good sleep and relaxing will work well alongside the food changes. Plus being tired makes you hungry and crave carbs.

People talk about diabetes being a lifestyle disease and think it's to do with food but it's also linked to our high-stress lifestyles.

[I'm not a health professional but I read about this a lot for work and it comes directly from health professionals/dietitians.]

faithfultoGeorgeMichael That's absolutely brilliant!

Thank you unbuttonedowl I have been hugely stressed lately. There's a lot going on for me so that definitely might be a part of it.

Struggling today, I have an old recurring ankle injury that is playing up because of the extra exercise that I did yesterday (this was the reason why I became less active in the first place) then I've been wandering around the supermarket feeling sorry for myself.

@WinnerTakesAFall I honestly avoid the supermarket as much as possible now. I'm fortunate that my DH does most of our food shopping, but otherwise I'd do it online. I find myself wandering around feeling irritated that the majority of the food on the shelves is stuff that I try not to eat (I'm actively trying to reduce my UPFs - with the exception of my beloved Coke Zero - and maintain a weight loss of 11 stone). It's easier just not to go there!

WinnerTakesAFall · 29/04/2026 15:35

Thank you WorstPaceScenario I do get a delivery sometimes but still end up at Aldi twice a week topping up veg, & that will be happening even more now that it's what I'm mainly eating.

I'll just have to get used to it because the kids still like a wander round the shops too.

My FIL - basically overhauled his diet, lots of fruit and veg, lean meat. Little to no refined carbs. Eats less overall. No snacking, no alcohol, no processed food. Big breakfast with fruit, eggs, yoghurt, nuts.
Also exercises every day.
Now 80 and still not classed as diabetic.

WinnerTakesAFall · 30/04/2026 15:42

Thank you WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs I had a full check with the nurse today. Everything else is more than healthy, it's just the diet & activity levels (I say just, but you know what I mean!)

I've still got to wait to speak to the Diabetes nurse, but I'm feeling a bit more positive.

Yes, many people do reverse prediabetes.
It usually comes down to improving diet (less sugar/refined carbs, more protein, veg, fibre) and increasing activity like daily walking. Even small changes and a bit of weight loss can help a lot.
Start small and build up before your GP appointment.

This is a useful site/app too

I use Nutracheck so I can keep track of my diet and carbs/protein/fibre.

I would also say be careful at what you read, there are some hard core anti carb people out there. What works for one person can be far too strict and unhelpful for another. You still have to live and enjoy life.

When I made veg soup I got people telling me to avoid carrots and how bad they are. I got so depressed and scared. I saw a brilliant dietician and cut back on my reading 🤣
