What workout tracking app do you use?

I've started going to the gym 6 days a week and have been using a tracking log that Claude (the AI) generated for me based on my goals. It's been really good but I'd rather just have a dedicated app for it rather than having to open my browser every time.

I'd like something where I can build up a template workout for each day (which I repeat each week – so I can open my Monday workout each Monday, my Tuesday each Tuesday, etc) and that tracks weights, reps, sets, and difficulty – and then shows me what I did the last time I logged that exercise so I can progress over time.

I've looked at Strong, but that only allows 3 templates on the free version, and Fitnotes, which seems kind of unintuitive... Has anyone found a good one that does this kind of thing and isn't paid-for?

I use Caliber.
It was easier for me to Google what it does than try to describe it!

The <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&rct=j&url=caliberstrong.com/&ved=2ahUKEwip9sjRr8WUAxXdV0EAHZXmLCQQy_kOegYIAAgKEAE&opi=89978449&cd&psig=AOvVaw3iC_VUpCRfQWuzaRcKnpFe&ust=1779280800039000" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Caliber Strength Training app works as a data-driven workout tracker that creates personalized weightlifting programs based on exercise science, progressive overload, and optional human coaching. Unlike many fitness apps, its entire core workout logger and exercise library are completely free, without any hidden ads or paywalls. 1, 2, ]
The app functions through three distinct tiers, depending on how much guidance you want:

  1. The Free Tier (Self-Guided Tracking) src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/UAs0Gp0V2Vw" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen> 1, 2, 3]
  • Custom Workout Generation: You answer questions about your goals, experience level, and what gym equipment you have access to. The "Workout Wizard" then builds a structured, multi-week strength program for you.
  • In-Depth Form Guides: It features a library of over 600 exercises. Each movement includes structured video demonstrations and text breakdowns detailing exactly how to execute the lift safely.
  • Gym Tool Utilities: While logging a workout, the app provides built-in rest timers, a history of your previous personal records, and a "plate math calculator" so you do not have to calculate how many heavy plates to slide onto a barbell.

I use strong - it doesn't allow you to create templates on the free version, but it may still do what you need. I alternate between 3 different ones usually, so say on Monday, I'll go to my history and select last Mondays workout, click 'perform again' and it brings up the same workout with last week's reps and weight. Then I just overwrite if say, I've increased the reps or added weight, and save it.
Its a very simple app but that's why I like it - it's pretty much an app equivalent of a notebook, I don't need anything more.

These are great – thanks! I get bored easily so having more than 3 workouts to play with in a week is important to me... maybe I'll have a pop with Caliber and see where I get to.

I use a printed excel spreadsheet and a pen as I just can't be bothered with having to open my phone and type numbers in all the time. I have tried...

You can have as many different workouts as you want, as many weeks as you want, and it is easy to see progression

I’m using Hevy after it was recommended on here.

Proteinpudding · 21/05/2026 22:12

You can record as many different workouts as you want on strong, you can start a new workout and add whatever exercises you want on the day, and then later find it in your history if you want to repeat it.
You just can't create more than 3 blank templates to save for the future, though that really doesn't limit day to day use.

I use the paid version of Hevy. I tried several on free trials, including that, and realised I needed to pay to get the flexibility - I need customised exercises (I do a lot of calisthenics) and rarely repeat the same workout. Got fed up with an app seeming OK and then saying ah no you can;t do that on this version, not transparently. I'm on the annual now and will probably switch to lifetime when it expires. It isn't perfect (and I need to learn more of its features) but works well and after years of fiddling around with a note on my phone or with different apps, I'm pleased with this.
