Creatin - do you notice a difference?

Have been training for a year and a half. Perimenopausal with terrible knees. Am wondering if this would help my stamina /DOMS?

What effects have you noticed?

I do take it, have done for a few months. Not sure what it’s doing but research shows it’s good for us to take. I’m sure it’s benefiting me some how.

There’s not much extra to say really. It’s widely researched and shown to have benefits. That’s more convincing than any anecdotal placebo stuff. I’ve been taking it since I started training. I’ve not trained without to know what the difference would be. And my sample size of one wouldn’t trump research. Why not give it a try and see if it helps. There’s not any particular downsides.

frockandcrocs · 04/01/2026 19:55

If you have any family history of liver or kidney problems, it’s worth consulting your GP before taking it. Other than that it’s significantly clinically proven to be a fantastic supplement.

thedogdaysareover51 · 04/01/2026 20:05

I take it. I’m peri menopausal and weight train regularly. I think it helps with DOMS but hard to say as I do still get DOMS but maybe they would be worse if I wasn’t on creatine?? I don’t have any joint pain, ever but I’m also on HRT (100mcg patches and Utrogestan) so maybe that is the reason. I would say it has helped massively with brain fog. I noticed a huge difference when I started taking it.

newyorkbreakfast · 04/01/2026 20:11

I am about to start taking it for the first time; it’s just been delivered, so Monday 5th Jan is going to be Day 1. I’m 50 and lift weights so let’s see if I notice anything…

AlphabetBird · 04/01/2026 20:14

I take it to help with brain fog and general energy levels, which is a less robustly researched benefit but one i definitely feel! I do work out too, which I’m sure it’s helping with, and is a very well understood area of benefit.

Make sure you drink plenty of water - it makes me wicked thirsty!

Thanks that’s interesting. Do you find it increases water retention too?

@AlphabetBird what dosage do you take? I take 5mg a day but not sure this is enough for the cognitive/sleep benefits.

Thanks for your reply. I just feel that we are constantly bombarded with widely researched supplements and could end up spending £100’s if I’m not careful. I like to know what actual effects real people have noticed. Hence my question here.

I've been taking it a while and I've noticed a difference in how strong I am, I am slowly progressing with higher weights after being 'stuck' with no progress for a long time. It's not dramatic but just being able to add a bit on for most of my exercises.

AlphabetBird · 05/01/2026 08:32

I take 5g/day. It does increase water retention, but not to a dramatic extent.

Taweofterror · 05/01/2026 08:34

It increases the likelihood of me needing to get up for a wee in the night if I take it too close to bedtime. But yes, nothing too dramatic for me either.

The thing is if you compare with say, studies on collagen, there are a lot less of evidence than studies with creatine.
creatine has been studied extensively (because men used it!) and so although i am not noticing many things, i feel more confident about it than about collagen (for example).
also im not taking it religiously every day. I take it only when i exercise (2-3 times a week). I am getting stronger and less brain fog (49yo) but there may be other factors at play too and it would be impossible for me to say yes, definitely, it is the creatine.

My PMT feels "lighter" in the last 6m or so which overlaps with me taking creatine regularly. The intensity of the mental fatigue and irritability has decreased.

I am making gains at the gym too. I had been static for a prolonged period at one point.

I find that if I take creatin I can press more weight and I have more energy for cardio.

Which brands are everyone taking, I took it for about 3 months but stopped (as trying to work out what is causing horrible itchy skin and eczema flares).
