Can you prevent muscle loss in cal def if not lifting by eating high protein?

Trying to understand the biology of it all.....

I do not believe so

your body processes food according to need
musckes need lots of calories to exist so in a deficit they are the first to go

Yes.

You can reduce muscle loss in a calorie deficit by eating enough protein, but you cannot fully preserve muscle mass without some form of resistance or weight-bearing activity. Here’s a breakdown:

1.
Protein Intake

  • Eating sufficient protein (generally 1.6–2.2g per kg of body weight per day) helps minimise muscle breakdown during a deficit.
  • It provides the building blocks your body needs to maintain muscle, even when energy intake is low.

2.
Exercise (or Lack of It)

  • Exercise, especially resistance training, is the most powerful stimulus for muscle retention.
  • Without any form of mechanical tension or resistance, your body has no reason to preserve all muscle tissue, even if you eat enough protein.
  • Inactivity (e.g. bed rest or sedentary lifestyle) accelerates muscle loss, particularly in a deficit.

3.
Other Factors

  • Rate of weight loss matters: slow, moderate deficits (e.g. 300–500 kcal/day) result in less muscle loss than aggressive ones.
  • Age, hormones, baseline muscle mass, and activity level also influence how much muscle is preserved.

Summary:

  • Protein helps – it’s necessary, but not sufficient alone.
  • Exercise is crucial for preserving lean mass.
  • Without training, some muscle loss is inevitable even with high protein intake in a calorie deficit.

I don't really understand your question. Are you exercising in some way? Do you want to develop or maintain muscle via exercise?

If you're not exercising, you won't develop or maintain muscle. Doesn't matter what you eat.

No I am not exercising currently but on a cal def - just needed to know if I need to each loads of extra protein to avoid muscle loss rather than fat loss in my weight loss journey.

In that situation, of course, eating protein won't make muscle. It feeds muscle growth made via exercise.

I havent asked if it will build muscle by eating protein - I have asked if eating high protien during a cal def will prevent loss of existing muscle.

Well I doubt it - a calorie deficit doesn't discriminate. The general wisdom about fasting, for example, is that the only way you can fast for more than 24 hours and NOT lose muscle, is by exercising.

But check with a nutritionist or your doctor.

in short no - why would your body , whilst in calories deficit , chose to preserve calorie hungry muscle if it isn’t needed ?
