What do you have for breakfast before going to the gym?

Just that really. I usually do a Pilates practice followed by either upper or lower body routine.

I used to get away with a small bit of dried fruit and a cuppa, but now I'm doing gym stuff too, I need more. I'm thinking some sort of muesli with Greek yoghurt, but am interested in what others have. Thanks.

I have black coffee beforehand but then make my own energy balls and eat them right after. I read recently that for female athletes the energy availability window (i.e. when you have to eat after training so that your body can make use of the fuel) is much shorter for women, around 30 mins max.

I use these but form them into balls. Also sometimes substitute different types of nut butter or dried fruit and always add in seeds.

I've read that too. My Pilates teacher, who also weight trains, says that whilst men can get away with not eating before exercise, women cannot. I shall ask her to expand on this, but as she is also a tenured professor, I assume there is a good reason why she says this.

I can't stomach solids so make a protein type shake with semi skimmed milk, couple of dollops of Greek yog, 2 tsp peanut butter, 2 tsp flaxseed / linseed / hemp seeds etc and 1/2 banana

I have a banana and a malt loaf bar or similar carby easy to digest food. I used to just have coffee but my sessions are much better with 200+ calories of carby food onboard. And then a decent breakfast with 30g of protein fairly soon afterwards.

OP (and everyone else) there is a book called Next Level which is about fitness, like being properly athletically fit, into your 40s and beyond and that explains the science behind it.

The writer recommends toast with nut butter before training and then eating immediately after, even just a pint of milk etc.

It's very chirpy / "you go girl!!" style, but if you can get past that, it has some good science-based advice.
