Can anyone recommend a good app for a beginner to use in the gym? I had a pt for a while last year but I've not been in the gym since last November and I don't really know what to do on my own. I need a program to follow which is straight forward where I can log my reps and weight, can anyone recommend a particular app to download? There are so many out there I don't know where to start.

I’d love to know too.

Sorry, can't help with an App such as the one you are looking for.

I follow Caroline Girvan's dumbbell workouts, which means I don't have to count reps or think "what's next?"

Over time - many of her programs run over 10 weeks - all areas are covered. Very effective and I never get bored.

@PaminaMozart I've seen people discussing Caroline Girvan, I hadn't heard of her, but I get the impression she's someone who does videos you follow at home. I'm looking for something the to log what weights I'm using and how many reps in gym. Will have a look anyway though, thanks

I use stronger by the day by Megsquats. It's a subscription though think it has a free trial. The app gives you a recommended workout and has videos to show you the exercise. The main thing I like about it compared to other programmes I've come across is that you can substitute exercises and it will give you a list of similar exercises that work the same body part. So if it's something you're not comfortable with you can see an easier progression, or if you don't have that piece of kit/the gym is busy. It calculates the weight you should use according to the info you put in at the start, and will suggest to increase or decrease depending on how you do. It has 3,4 or 5 day options.

I should add, SBTD is aimed at people who, well, want to get stronger! IE lifting weights and working towards heavier weights. It's not a 'feel the burn'/endurance type of routine - depends what you're looking for.

For a long time I used the Strong app, which is free, though that is literally just recording your weights and sets so you know what to aim for next time - it doesn't give a programme. I've trained for a long time so I did know what to do in the gym, but I have found having a programme means I push myself more and I've seen a noticeable difference, both in terms of strength and what I see in the mirror.

I don't use one but I've heard good things about stronger by the day too.

Gym shark app is good. It does have plans and you can choose how many days etc. It’s free.
I haven’t used it as a stand alone plan because I have one from my PT but I dip in and out.

Just in case anyone is looking for the same thing I have gone with the 'Strong' app which is just what I was looking for. Really simple to use and I paid £27.49 for a years subscription to Strong Pro which gives me plans to choose from with videos demonstrating each exercise, plus you can put together workout plans of your own too. Just got to get my fat arse back down the bloody gym now! Grin
