Hello 👋🏻
New to lifting this year and with the support of a PT am learning to deadlift and squat with a barbell - form now good enough to do alone at my gym.
I'll be progressing gradually and introducing new exercises in future.
My running shoes aren't ideal for gym - they are quite angled. Can anyone recommend a good shoe for a beginner lifter ( I have wide hobbit feet!) ...! Size 6.5-7

Nike Metcons - I resisted buying specialist weightlifting shoes for a long time, as they were quite expensive, but they have made a real difference and I don't 'fall off' the sides of my shoes any more. They're often on offer if you hunt around and aren't too fussed about colour or having the latest model.

Yes, I was going to say metcons too - they’re a good all rounder for lifting, firm underfoot with a bit of a heel lift.

Thankyou @QueenAnnesHat - I'll see if they appear in any Black Friday offers. Do you recommend sizing up? I usually do for running shoes

I wear barefoot shoes for lifting - I like Vivo.

I have weightlifting shoes for Olympic lifting and squats but they’re not great for anything else (including walking!). I deadlift in my socks and it’s a real game changer. Wear cheap all round trainers for everything else.

RayKray · 22/11/2023 07:19

Yep Metcons are a good all rounder.

I think if you’re a relative beginner and not competing you can get away with Converse Allstars as better than running shoes, for quite a while.

I think specialist weightlifting shoes (I powerlift so end up needing three pairs, one for each lift(!)) are good once your weights are heavy or if you’re planning to compete.

We are at a similar stage of our journey!

I have just ordered some of these - they have quite good reviews and are on sale.

I bought some Metcons and my knees were complaining in running shoes. Got some unboxed new ones on eBay. Place I bought from did returns. I did research and went half a size up as some said they came up small. They were about 40%of nee

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/11/2023 19:50

Thanks @Snowpaw, I've bought some too!

MistyTrains2 · 25/11/2023 21:05

Yes I got some nearly new Metcons on Vinted for £40!

EtiennePalmiere · 30/11/2023 02:49

Does any know if something like plimsolls from Primark or similar would work ? Do they just have to be flat ? I'd rather not buy Nike for various reasons
