Protein bars

I'm vegetarian and trying to increase my protein intake. I've been looking at protein bars as an occasional way to increase protein but lots have a very long list of ingredients. Does anyone know which are the best to aim for please? I'm thinking 2/3 times a week instead of a chocolate bar. 20g of protein if possible.

I don't rate them personally but interested to see replies. Too many ultra processed ingredients. I have a protein powder and make it into a shake, split one portion over 2 through the day.

I looked a lot and I found Bulk powders which are only sweetened with stevia, not sucralose.

There is also Form nutrition but they are pricey and IMHO too much stevia, so sweet, but I did like them with 1/3 portion mixed into oats.

Other high protein snacks I have are cottage cheese, pear slices and walnuts. Cottage cheese mixed into scrambled egg. Also Yeo Valley extra thick yoghurt. Homemade hummus half chickpea half beetroot.

Thanks for replying and for your protein ideas @MistyTrains, I've been thinking about it and I will look into making my own. The shop bought bars just have too many ingredients. I like the idea of the convenience but the processing of these bars contradicts the fact that I'm trying to be healthier. I just fancied a sweet protein treat that was easy to grab. I'm not much of a baker though so wish me luck!

I just stick with protein powder as it's cheaper and less extra ingredients. I have eaten some from Aldi before but I'd rather down a shake and then eat some real chocolate.

I haven't ever had one that wasn't moderately nasty. They're normally low sugar so they're neither sweet not the right texture, just not as satisfying as chocolate, whilst being really expensive. I've started having boxes of hardboiled eggs in the fridge. Dipped in soy sauce they make a very satisfying savory snack. Otherwise try switching to a small amount of dark chocolate with fruit?

I have unflavoured whey powder and mix with cocoa powder to make a chocolate milk shake. Even though I make it with water. 🙄 I find flavoured protein powders too sweet and chemical tasting.

For general foods, cottage cheese, Greek yoghurt, or Aldi protein yoghurt - the plain one and boiled eggs are all good sources of protein without being full of junk.

I'd do a search on eBay for powders if you do. Prices have absolutely skyrocketed since COVID-19- two years ago you could get 5 kg of pure whey for less than £50, now you're looking at comfortably £80+ for many brands (even on eBay). The brand websites like MyProtein (I just checked) are selling 5 kg for £237, and £245 on Bulk!!! They make you think you're getting a good deal by knocking 30-50% off, but this is still phenomenally extortionate! Even the 90% versions with 'some' carbs are over £100.

Don't go for the bulking powders, as these pad out the whey and casein with carbs... better to add your own if you're short (e.g. a banana).

I'm not veggie but trying to increase my protein too.

For breakfast I'm having a shake/smoothie - frozen berries/fruit, fat free greek yog, protein powder, honey a little water and ice depending on how thick you want it.

I'm trying to lose weight so have the fat free yog, you may not be.

100g of the yogurt has 14.6g protein and the protein powder has 18.5g protein per 30g of powder.

Today I have doubled my protein powder as I'm still struggling to meet my target even having chicken at lunch and salmon for dinner.
