Advice for a newbie

Wow I didn't realise this was a topic on MN! Just saw it pop up and active threads.

I'm a complete newbie to lifting. At present I have 2 x 4kg dumbbells at home and that's it. I'm in my late 30's and feeling flabby. I need to lose weight but would also like to tone up my arms, and eventually my belly when I've lost some weight. And just generally feel stronger.

Can anyone recommend a starting point for me? Maybe some videos/instructors I can visit on YouTube? I may also be able to get to the gym occasionally but realistically I would say most of my workouts are going to be at home so I need to know what im doing.

You need a programme of progressive overload. So start with doing bodyweight work: squats with correct form- no bending over! Also planks and push ups. As you get stronger, add weights.

Following one of Caroline Girvan's programmes on YouTube is a good start.
Specifically her Iron series for just pure weights, no HIIT/cardio specific workouts like her other series.
You might need some heavier weights for chest press, bent over row, etc.
I often get them from Facebook Marketplace
