Lifting support thread 2

RayKray · 29/05/2023 17:20

Just noticed I was the last to post on the lifting support thread as it went to 1k so here's another.

Original thread intro post here from
@Work2live

"Thought I’d start this thread as a few people thought it’d be a good idea.

"It might be a nice place to support each other and talk about lifting in general, ask for tips and advice on workouts, how to get enough protein etc.

"All levels very much welcome, from complete newbies to those who’ve been weightlifting for years! 💪🏼"

So quiet I'd fallen off the notifications 😀.

@RayKray sounds like you are getting back in the headspace - and great you are hitting your targets. I love new kit - gives me a real boost.

@Proteinpudding , so so frustrating. It will come back, trust to that, but you cannot rush recovery.

I'm a very slow runner and not really got back to it after covid and the cold snap (I move so slowly, I just can't face it in temps near zero, and worry about falling too). I'm back boxing 2/3 times a week though, which is very sweaty cardio, so will fit the odd run in when I can and not worry too much I think - can't fit everything in even if time permits as I feel too tired.

Strength training more regular again now tho my partner is injured so another change in routine as I train differently solo. I'm focussed on front lever drills - lots of messing around with bands 😀.

AffIt · 30/01/2024 09:46

Morning all! Hope everybody is well and surviving January (we're soooo close!).

Hit a new DL PB this morning - 80kg x 5! Pleased with myself, because I had been a bit stuck at my previous target of 75kg (bodyweight) for most of January, but as my trainer likes to remind me, progress isn't linear... 😉

Onwards and upwards to that three-figure target!

RayKray · 30/01/2024 15:20

That's awesome @AffIt ! Well done!

So @MsMartini you're basically telling me I have to get the new singlet, right?

OP posts:
MsMartini · 30/01/2024 17:37

I think it is essential for comp prep @RayKray 😀

everycowandagain · 30/01/2024 21:08

It's 💯 essential @RayKray!

RayKray · 30/01/2024 21:10

Well if you're both sure... 😂

@Proteinpud same here, trying to recover from a virus but the kids got it worse and I have been getting up to deal with their coughing fits 3-6 times a night for nearly 2 weeks. It's just the run of the mill post viral coughing so they will be fine but I am EXHAUSTED!

This week is the peak of my current training block so I am looking forward to a lighter training week next week. This week is endless volume and high RPEs. Ugh! It's going OK though.

I squatted with my coach on Sunday and did 5 reps of 50kg so I am definitely on track to smash my old 60kg 1 rep max at some point!

Just need sleep!!

everycowandagain · 30/01/2024 21:14

@AffIt good job!! I am also working towards that three figure deadlift, I reckon it's coming for both of us!

Proteinpud · 30/01/2024 21:44

Ah @everycowandagain that sounds tough, I'm a wuss when I'm ill there's no way I could cope with looking after children when ill! And well done on the squats progress, you've been patient and it's paying off!

@RayKray another vote for a new singlet. You want to be sure it's comfortable before comp...

AffIt · 31/01/2024 13:59

Great work @everycowandagain! I know I find heavy stuff really hard if I haven't been sleeping well, so I hope you have a good night soon.

@RayKray, you realise we are all now willing you to get the singlet... 😄

MsMartini · 31/01/2024 14:05

@RayKray , your singlet-to-be appears to have united us all 😂

Gosh, respect @everycowandagain, doing that on lack of sleep. I find training really hard without a good night. I hope you get one soon!

I'm happy we've had some normal weather, and got a decent pull up session in yesterday after run of minor injury/covid/christmas/cold snap (indoor gym so crowded in January that it was frozen bars outside or nothing) made it tricky to get any volume. Not quite where I was but felt strong again.

My PT partner is injured so I need to think what to do if it looks like it will be a while...I can't really justify the cost solo on top of gym and boxing club.....

everycowandagain · 31/01/2024 19:31

Glad you got a good session in @MsMartini. Hope you can figure out the PT thing. It really does all add up.

Oh and @RayKray you were totally right about the switch to mixed grip. I discussed it with my coach and we agreed that seeing as I was going to have to make the change at some point I may as well get on with it. Turns out it was a non-event! It felt normal almost immediately.

erinaceus · 01/02/2024 09:43

Hi everyone 👋🏼

I am a powerlifter and am planning to compete in July.

I want to have squat shoes for comp and my coach said I either get some squat shoes this month or I have to compete in my Converse 😂

Therefore I must go shopping!

Anyone got any recommendations? I am happy with squat specific shoes. I do not need compromise all-rounder CrossFit type training shoes. My feet are on the wider side and I am about a size 6 or 7 (EU 39 or 40). I’d rather invest in a great pair that will perform and last than buy cheapies. I had strength shop ones before but they were crap and uncomfortable. I would be grateful for any pointers.

erinaceus

RayKray · 01/02/2024 10:02

Well it looks like it would be rude not to get a new singlet 😂

@everycowandagain glad mixed grip went ok, I was surprised it wasn't trickier to transition too. And great progress.

@MsMartini sorry to hear about the partner issues.

And you'll all get there with the 3 figure deadlifts! It's just a matter of time and hard work but totally doable.

@erinaceus excited for your competition!!! I got mine cheap off vinted, there were several to choose from as plenty of people use them then upgrade/quit. They're adidas ones.

everycowandagain · 01/02/2024 10:08

Welcome @erinaceus Love to hear about people's comps, I train for powerlifting but am not brave enough to compete yet. Maybe I need a nice gentle novice event....

erinaceus · 01/02/2024 10:17

@everycowandagain I know London (that’s my GBPF district) have a novice comp this year. I competed one time before years ago and am excited to get on the platform again if all goes to plan.

@RayKray I had not thought of Vinted, I had looked on eBay. Will have a poke around. Thanks for the suggestion.

RayKray · 01/02/2024 10:19

@everycowandagain if I'm getting the singlet then you have to compete! Do a novice comp, they're all welcoming but them even more so. Or a gym comp. Everyone loves welcoming new lifters.

everycowandagain · 02/02/2024 15:03

Do any of you use wrist wraps when you are lifting? I tried them last week for the first time and I have a big bruise on one wrist!!

We were trying to help with some wrist pain when I squat but I don't know if the bruising is normal!

RayKray · 02/02/2024 17:09

I don't I'm afraid, I've not heard bruising is a thing.

Proteinpud · 02/02/2024 20:36

Finally managed to do a full strength workout, last one was 7th Jan 😳
I realised afterwards that I was kidding myself with my squat depth so I think I'll drop the weight next time or try more warm up sets, but still I'm happy to have done something!

redfacebigdisgrace · 02/02/2024 20:43

@Proteinpud well done!! Yes I’ve had to drop my squat weight to get depth. It’s a bit discouraging. I find squats so hard!

@everycowandagain yes I had that at my thumb joint when I was deadlifting . I think the strap is too tight maybe?

Proteinpud · 02/02/2024 22:00

@redfacebigdisgrace yes, I'm not sure if it was a strength thing or confidence, without thinking I did the weights on my programme (not taking into account the break) so I was doubting myself. Much easier to focus on form if you're not worrying about getting back up out of the hole!

RayKray · 03/02/2024 06:35

Yeh that last bit of depth is the really hard bit. I'm still not back to what I could 'squat' when I was nowhere near depth. For me squats are harder cos you're down trying to get back up with a massive weight on your back. A lot harder for the brain than just picking something up off the ground.

OP posts:
everycowandagain · 03/02/2024 14:11

@redfacebigdisgrace I think that might be it - I think one one of my sets I wrapped it too tightly and the seam was in an awkward place. Also I was using my coach's SBD wraps which were quite stiff and he did say he thought I could get away with softer ones.

everycowandagain · 03/02/2024 14:13

Glad you are getting back into it @Proteinpud.
