What weight dumbells?

I'm just starting off doing some youtube work outs. I only have 1.5kg dumbells but they seem a bit light. I don't know whether to buy 2kg or whether it would be better to go heavier? Thanks.

I'd go for maybe 4 or 5kg tbh

Theelephantinthecastle · 16/04/2023 21:10

When I was just starting out, I used 2kg and 3kg ones.

I fairly quickly stopped using the 2s very much but I couldn't have gone straight to 5s

mondaytosunday · 16/04/2023 21:11

Get 3kg, 4 and 5. It's a jump between each. After 5kg I'd get kettlebells in 6, 8 and 10, depending on what you are doing, or dumbbells in those weights.

sausagepastapot · 16/04/2023 21:12

Depends entirely on what you're doing with them?

Bicep curls, squats, triceps, lats....? All would benefit from different weights.

LittleFreakJezebel · 16/04/2023 21:12

I would go with 3kg, I use 4kg now but that's only since going to the gym 3 times a week regularly for a while.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 16/04/2023 21:12

I used 2 then 3 then 4 then 5; then back to 4 which I still use. I kept the 5 and still use occasionally.
I would go to 3 for a few months and then get 4s.
i sold mine on when I didn’t need anymore. Don’t pay too much for them; maybe get second hand?

I wouldn't go straight to that after only 1.5, 3kg would be good but agree also get 4&5 as you need different weights for different exercises

Thanks everyone.

It depends what they're for. You'd need much much heavier for squatting than a lateral raise for example. And then it depends how hard you want to train.
When I was about 5 months into training I got a set where you can add more on, I think they went up to 20kg, for when I went on holiday. I could just about do what I needed although it was a bit light for squats. I'm now a year in and that would be way too light.

Fiftyisthenewsixty · 18/04/2023 07:13

I'm not doing squats at the moment, just 15 minute "arm toning" videos! I might get more into it I suppose but for the moment I think I just need something slightly more challenging than what I've got.

Argos sells dumbell sets and dumbell trees (has a variety of weights on it)

RayKray · 18/04/2023 07:51

Yeh I got mine from argos. That might be a good bet as then it allows for progress. You'll progress quickly to start with it (if you push yourself) so having that flexibility will be helpful. The annoying thing will be having to stop to change over. If you've got cash and space though a set up to say 10kg will work for a while for just arm stuff.

BrandNewBicep · 18/04/2023 13:59

I started on 1.5kg and then moved to 3kg, 4kg and now doing 5kg for most moves. Just about to go to 6kg for some moves. I wouldn't jump up to 4 or 5 from 1.5kg, I think it would be too heavy.

Fiftyisthenewsixty · 19/04/2023 11:08

Thanks. I ended up getting 2.5kg as 2 x 3kg was too heavy to carry home. 😁

I bought a set up to 10kg which I went through pretty quickly so bought adjustable ones which go up to 24kg but I’ve now makes them out on some things. I use lighter ones for some things but generally add a kg a week for progressive overload so having adjustable ones is great.

I got heavy magnets screwed into 0.5/1kg weight plates to add onto my adjustable ones so I got a bit more out of them.
