Is Bmi realistic? I am 5 feet 2. Weigh 10 stone 2 lb and my BMI is saying I am overweight??

What dress size are you?
Your height/weight puts you just into the overweight category

Debsdonein · 09/11/2021 17:00

I am a 12

That does sound low -

Is it right at the low end of 'overweight'?
I'm similar in height & at my most comfortable around 10st 6lbs & feel quite slim at that size.

dementedpixie · 09/11/2021 17:03

Nhs bmi calculator says 9st 10lbs would put you into the healthy weight category

dementedpixie · 09/11/2021 17:05

So you're only 6lb over that
I'm in the obese category so can't really say much

Purplewithred · 09/11/2021 17:10

"Realistic" in what way? BMI is a general guide but a good enough hint that maybe it's time to keep an eye on your weight. If you are very muscly it's less accurate but I know that at 5' 2" I would look overweight at over 10 stone and would be needing a size 14. But I'm probably older than you too.

Debsdonein · 09/11/2021 17:16

I feel about right. Quite large busted which makes me a size 14 on top but 12 below. I need to check when I will be in normal range. Lol.

I feel comfortable but if anything would prefer to put a bit weight on. Certainly don't want to lose much more.

Realistic as in I don't feel overweight. My heaviest has been 11 stone.

BMI is a good rule of thumb for the vast majority of the population. If you are just outside of healthy weight it may well be OK but to some extent it depends where you carry your fat. If your waist measurement I is no more than half your height (i.e. no more than 31 inches) then you should be fine as you are. If it's higher then you may have too much visceral fat and that can be a real health risk.

Pseudonymforme · 12/11/2021 19:06

I'm 5 foot and 14 stone 😱

Pseudonymforme · 12/11/2021 19:06

BMI around 38 I think

Chelyanne · 15/11/2021 12:57

That's not too bad. If you're happy with your shape abit over the healthy range is fine.

My BMI is now 34.9 after baby, was around 26 a few years ago so been pretty rubbish on the diet front.
I've never been a "healthy" BMI, I do carry more muscle than the average since I got in to powerlifting though. I was almost happy with myself at my lightest but the excess skin round my middle after having huge twins is quite depressing.

fishonabicycle · 27/03/2022 21:50

Well, if you are happy that size who cares?

firef1y · 26/06/2022 10:17

I'm 5'2" wear a 10-12 and am apparently obese. BMI does not take muscle mass in to account, I have a bf% of around 25% (working on getting it lower) which puts me at the fitness level.
