I KNOW I need to lose weight. My bmi has got me in the overweight zone and I want to be in my healthy range. I need to lose about a stone but I just have no motivation.

I have a treadmill, dumbbells and 2x8kg kettlebells in my cabin but I just lack motivation. I always find excuses and just sit at night after work and watch tv and eat snacks!!!

How do you motivate yourself?

Looking in the mirror.

ItalianHat · 19/09/2020 17:26

This is a forum for those of us who lift heavy weights for fun and so we don't have to diet. You'll get a better response if you post in the correct forum for your question.

Although the motivation I get is seeing myself in the mirror deadlifting 90kg and watching my abs and biceps appear

@ItalianHat apologies

Uni apologies needed. Just trying to explain why maybe you didn’t get many answers.

As for motivation. I just like lifting heavy shit. I like being strong. I like to learn how to do new stuff, like a proper deadlift or a full body press up or a pull up.

But I go to the gym and that help motivation - I make it a habit, a normal part of every day. And I know that the hour I spend there makes the rest of the day much Mitch more pleasant, and I can be smug. By 9am I’ve already done something productive and useful.

My yoga teacher once said that the achievement is not doing a particular pose. The achievement is getting to the mat every day even when you don’t feel like it. Just get to the mat.

No apologies - don’t know where uni came from. Darn autocorrect

you need to surround yourself with slender people. I mean, for example, subscribe to them on Instagram or Facebook. slim bodies will become the norm for you and you want to be the same after a while. works for me. and you just need to force yourself to train the first time, the first results will delight you and you will want to continue! it always works for me!

That is a very good point. My job means that I am surrounded by a lot of women in their late teens/early twenties, many of them Chinese. Some so slim that a lot of Mumsnetters would struggle to believe that they can still be alive, never mind healthy.

then you can try to find those who will admire the body and surround themselves with such people (for example, in social networks, the simplest option). I hope you find your own way to motivate!)

As a former chubster, I've found that I had to grind it until I had something to lose (i.e. my improved physique). The hardest was when I porked it during lockdown and became fatter than I'd been in years. Instead of rushing back to the gym when it reopened I stayed in the "what harm can one more week do" mindset for weeks.

Don't try and motivate yourself, just go. Pack bag night before and just start driving to gym after work. Once there it's much easier. Don't think too far ahead. The goal is just to start driving there.

You should watch about the five second rule with Mel Robbins

This is utterly fantastic advice. A yoga teacher once said to me, that the most important step in one's practice was coming to the mat. Once you're there. you may as well do something. And doing something is better than nothing. Always
