Am super busy at work at the mo and I really want to improve my strength (but am struggling to get to the gym).

I was thinking that even if I can't get to the gym I should be able to something at home before I go to work. I was thinking that I could do some press ups, and basic exercises, etc as I live in a tiny house and don't have room for loads of equipment. If you couldn't get to a gym and could only buy one thing to exercise with what would you get?
I was thinking about buying some kettlebells and using them at home? Would this be a good idea? Is there anything else you would recommend and what exercises would you do if really pushed for space, time, limited equipment?

Resistance bands are cheap, very versatile, take up practically no space and are very effective. There are also loads of good dvd workouts that require no equipment at all (except a mat). If you have a wii, the wii active program is actually very good (it uses the controllers and resistance bands)

Personally I think a couple of pt sessions to help with kettlebell technique would be best if you want to go that way but yes, a great option.

Bodyweight exercises can be amazing - push ups, squats, tricep dips, planks, lunges, all can be modified to make harder (plyometrics, split squats, raised feet for push ups etc) if necessary.

Resistance bands also fab as pp said.

Or, if you can/want to throw a bit more cash at it then a TRX (or cheaper unbranded version) is hard to beat for an at home strength workout.

I can't get to the gym because of childcare, so have been doing the t25 in my living room and have got great results with that. It's cardio and weights in the Beta- if you wanted you can just easily add weights into the alpha round too.

Thank you everyone for your posts. On the plus side I got PB on my Parkrun, went to gym on Sun and then did another run on Monday. On the minus side I came down with the lurgy on Tuesday (and I normally never get ill) and I am still ill Sad

Kettlebells are great, and really good to do KB and bodyweight workouts at home. But PLEASE, have a session with a DECENT kettlebell instructor (StrongFirst certified if possible) to get the technique down first if you want to do swings.

I trained for a year with our local KB club but now DH's hours mean I can't get to the classes so I use the gym instead. The instructors there show people such bad technique it makes me cringe. TBH they tend to use really light weights, so people probably wouldn't get too injured, but they're not getting the maximum benefit from them either.

video is a bit lengthy but shows a good technique.

I keep a couple of adjustable dumbbells and a barbell in my flat/office. They sell them at decathlon and argos and the plates are interchangeable. I can do quite a bit with them. I also use a physio ball (cheap and easy to find) for a few things. I even use my coffee table to support things like one arm dumbbell rows. I also have a set of bands. Add in bodyweight stuff like pushups and I can do most everything. Although I find it easier to be motivated if I go to the gym. Others may be the opposite!
