Has anyone ever experienced this?

This used to happen when I was young - under the age of 10.

I would always be by myself when it happened. It's hard to describe but basically all of a sudden I would be in this bright white light and blissfully, joyfully happy, nothing like ordinary happiness, even for a child.

It was only for a split second, but during that time I became unaware of my surroundings. There was just the light and a blissful, euphoric feeling.

Then it was over.

It happened several times over the course of my early childhood, then stopped after the age of 10. I've tried asking my kids if they'd ever experienced this, but they had no idea what I was talking about.

Just wondering how common this is and if it's happened to anyone else?

No never! But that sounds incredible!

Wren77 · 17/11/2023 20:59

Hi there, I used to have funny episodes which I never really told anyone about because I must have thought it was normal, but I would feel it coming on, like a flip flopping in my tummy, like I had been spun upside down, and then I would 'go off' somewhere for a few seconds - there would be talking in my head, then I'd come back. On reflection I wondered if I experienced childhood epilepsy/ petit mals. It was a bit scary - I couldn't stop it when it started

SBHon · 17/11/2023 21:20

Yes! Similar anyway. I don’t think the white light but perhaps, it’s hard to remember. I wouldn’t be alone either.

TammyJones · 18/11/2023 06:25

Epilepsy was the first thing I thought.

LapinR0se · 18/11/2023 06:38

This can be a form of epilepsy

agingparentdilemma · 18/11/2023 06:40

This sounds neurological.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/11/2023 06:51

I'm thinking epilepsy, too.

Justcallmebebes · 18/11/2023 06:52

I too thought a form of epilepsy

TheCurtainQueen · 18/11/2023 06:57

Childhood epilepsy. Not sure why you would leap to a paranormal explanation.

CurlewKate · 18/11/2023 07:26

Childhood epilepsy. Or a dream. Not paranormal.

cassiatwenty · 18/11/2023 07:29

This sounds so beautiful

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 18/11/2023 07:29

Another saying Sounds like epilepsy.

Sparkletastic · 18/11/2023 08:13

Sounds like ecstatic epileptic seizures

igor · 18/11/2023 08:18

Epilepsy for sure

itstoopeopleyoutthere · 18/11/2023 11:28

If it was epilepsy, wouldn't there be other symptoms? Otherwise, why would anyone ever get treated for having ecstatic experiences? 🤔

I have had spiritual experiences as an adult that echo the feeling I had as a child, though not quite as intense, and they are definitely not epilepsy.

Not necessarily OP. I had a close friend who just had momentary 'absences' - she'd be talking then just stared into space for about 20 seconds, then carry on. She was later diagnosed with epilepsy.

Bosca · 18/11/2023 11:32

Yes, some form of neurological issue. Epilepsy or associated conditions don’t always manifest as seizures. A friend’s daughter (now 12, diagnosed a year or so ago) had had brief ‘absences’ for years before anyone noticed. Some types of epilepsy are associated with auras, smells, feelings of pleasure or dread etc.

Pre-science eras would have ascribed a supernatural explanation.

EveryKneeShallBow · 18/11/2023 12:06

I had a great aunt, my grandmother’s sister. She was loved in the family, but known as a bit touched. She used to fly with birds, met and had conversations with angels and more than once went missing and was found sitting in a field or wood, chatting to the farm animals or trees. She had epilepsy, but never collapsed or fainted, she was just very gentle and childlike, and very religious. And she lived to be 104.

@itstoopeopleyoutthere "I have had spiritual experiences as an adult that echo the feeling I had as a child, though not quite as intense, and they are definitely not epilepsy."

How do you know?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/11/2023 14:36

I occasionally have moments of feeling utterly, blissfully happy; no white light though. I can trigger sudden bursts of 'wow' too (although I'm not quite sure how I do it).

I've always put it down to my ADHD, because it feels as though it's something adrenaline-fuelled.

Shakesapear · 18/11/2023 14:44

OP describes an experience. Posters give a rational scientific reason why that thing could happen. OP says that couldn't possibly be the case for no real reason.

semideponent · 18/11/2023 14:46

Why is this so either/or?

itstoopeopleyoutthere · 18/11/2023 14:58

But why must there be a scientific reason? This is a paranormal thread.

So you WANT it to be paranormal, even if it might be medical? Confused

WildflowersInAMasonJar · 18/11/2023 15:04

I’d get yourself checked out by a doctor OP. This is exactly what my friends son described as happening to him and he was then diagnosed with epilepsy. Her second son has now started to have the same so he is waiting to be seen but she’s thinking he also has epilepsy.
