Hello fellow spooks,

I have been utterly fascinated by all your previous posts of staying at a haunted hotel/ B&B etc. My husband is a sceptic, I am a (reluctant) believer, but would LOVE a spooky encounter. Where are your spooky recommendations, and what did you see there?

TIA!

The White Swan at Stratford upon Avon. Stayed in a room at the front of the hotel. Heard footsteps above our room in the small hours and assumed it was guests in the room above ours, only realised the next day that there was no room above our room only a low attic space... Proper spooky.

I stayed at a Travelodge once. The dampness and sudden chilly gusts were eerie. The way the curtains moved because of the ill-fitting windows was also discomforting. And the hair raising stomach noises from next door - where the drunk travelling salesman was staying - will haunt me forever.

Spooky.

Ooooooh can’t wait to hear stories/recommendations!

Elvetham Hotel, away for work. Was freaked out by the room for no apparent reason. Wouldn't shower in case I closed my eyes, couldn't sleep, left light on all night. Finally managed to drop off around 5am only to wake 15 mins later with sleep paralysis, checked out by 7am and sat outside waiting for taxi as just had to get out of there.
Will never stay again but can't explain why.
Next night, different hotel which advertised it's resident ghost, slept like a baby 🫣

Me & DH always stay in haunted pubs!

I don't actually believe in ghosts but I love the history, the stories, the quirky old buildings...

However at one place we really did get, well, haunted.

Golden Fleece in York. Noises, lights flashing and there was definitely SOMETHING moving around in our bathroom. We stayed 2 nights and it happened both nights, early hours of the morning.

We coped by bravely hiding under the duvet 😂

Hotel Pennsylvania in New York. I've never felt so uneasy staying anywhere before. That building was crawling with memories and static. I felt like I had to have my back to the wall whenever I was alone in the room. Utterly horrible place. I Googled it later on and learned that it's had a lot of suicides and deaths over the years.

Had exactly this in room 16 at the Bear Hotel in Woodstock. It was known as the haunted room. The most awful night I’ve ever spent.

Stayed in Thornbury castle as little pre honeymoon break just after I'd got married. We stayed in a room at the top of a tower up a winding staircase. The windows kept flying open in the night and the lights kept going on and off. We didn't sleep a wink. The room was gorgeous though. The shower was something else.

Also stayed in the bull in Sudbury Suffolk. In the morning dh asked me why id been caressing him and kissing him in the night. I hadn't. I'd been absolutely sparko.

😱😱 You lot need to start saying your prayers before bedtime.

Not me but a close friend stayed in a hotel in Oxfordshire with friends and she couldn’t stay the night in that room or was disturbed, she said haunted.

The Mermaid Inn in Rye is said to be haunted, I’ve never stayed there. I’ve stayed in another pub there, not haunted at all!

Places I’ve definitely felt weird and spooked out are Conquest House in Canterbury and Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub in inns of courts area (Fleet Street) London.

I’ve stayed at lots of other hotels, b&bs worldwide but not experienced anything strange to my recollection.

If you want a haunted experience, the Vaults in Edinburgh are haunted, not experienced it myself but someone with me yes.

I stayed overnight with DS and DD2 in the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool in room 666 (it's one of the accessible rooms -I'm not kidding). We laughed about the number as DS is a real horror movie fan and as a total sceptic I really wasn't worried.

Anyway, we went up to the room and it had a really eerie feeling, so much so that I didn't want to have a shower and leave DC. We went out for the evening to see whatever we were going to see and got back fairly late. Got into bed and no one wanted the lights off. I really struggled to get off to sleep and when i eventually did I kept dreaming about this little boy peeping out from behind the wardrobe.

Just before dawn I woke up feeling like I'd just been poked hard in the back. Thought it was one of the kids but no one there. Tried for another hour or so to get back off to sleep but I was a bit freaked and it wasn't happening. I eventually get up to have a wee and just got to the bathroom door when my littlest jumped up shrieking asking why I'd just poked her. Nothing else happened after that but it was honestly the weirdest night of my life.

I stayed at the Moore Place Hotel in Aspley Guise years ago for an event. During the evening meal a helium balloon on our table literally moved on its own in front of our eyes. I don't mean it was swaying in a breeze- it looked like the ribbon it was on was pulled down by invisible hands and then let go. So the ribbon bent into a zigzag on its own, then went back into its normal position. It's hard to explain but it's not something that a helium balloon could ever do on its own and I have tried to reenact what it did using my own hands and it would need two hands to do it. Two other guests also saw it happen and we all stopped talking and just stared at the balloon because it was so odd.

The next morning, a member of our party said they felt a hand pushing on their head in the night but this person was in a room by themself. And another member of the party reported the weird sensation of pressure on their feet in the night, like someone sitting on the end of the bed. So nothing too major but enough to make me feel relieved I only saw the odd balloon incident rather than have weird things happen to me whilst I was in bed.

The Maids Head Hotel in Norwich is reputed to be haunted by the former mayor and a maid

I live about half an hour away and keep meaning to go there and see it for myself

Valerianandfoxglovesoup · 06/10/2023 16:50

I lived in a pub when I was a student. It was a dark heavy atmosphere, really oppressive. The dog and cat refused to go into two of the bedrooms, flat out refused and the dog, an ancient , friendly old pub sheepdog would have attacked us rather than been forced in there. Years later, when it was being renovated, they found a Victorian child's body in the chimney of what had been my bedroom. I wasn't surprised, there was a terrible feeling of sadness.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/10/2023 16:52

A hotel in Rhodes about 30 years ago.
Our sliding balcony door clicked & unlocked itself. Dh went & locked it again.
Then our beds started shaking. Dh thought it was me messing about knocking his bed with my foot. It wasn't & my bed was tremoring as well. Lasted a few minutes.
We told a waitress in the morning & she came back with garlic cloves to put by the door.
Nothing else happened after that.

Some years ago my cousin’s wedding was at Norwich Cathedral and we stayed at the Maids Head. We were kept awake all night but not by anything paranormal. There had been a burst water main and they were digging up the road right under our window for the whole bloody night. A ghost would have been a welcome alternative.

A hotel on Loch Rannoch. Beautiful. Middle of the night got up to go to the loo. Back in bed & heard "whispering" next to me. Then it felt like someone was stroking my arm. Not dh, he was sound asleep with his back to me.
I whipped my arm under the covers & said go away, I'm tired.
Did not get back to sleep & watched the (lovely) sunrise.

Landmark trust place (like Airbnb) the priest house in holscombe rogus in north Devon, I heard footsteps all night long and doors opening and closing all around us, the graveyard is right outside the window and there is a built in stable.
bug many many of their properties have been reported to be haunted as they are all very old.

Stayed in a holiday apartment in Prague. The first door led onto two apartments, both unlocked when Friend and I arrived.

We assumed it was OK to use the showers in both apartments but the manager went ballistic and accused us of breaking into the adjacent one.

I shrugged that off. We hadn't done anything of the sort so I assumed someone had forgotten to lock up.

We stayed Monday-Friday and every night when we were in bed I saw someone open the bedroom door and lean in towards me. Whoever it was had on dark clothing and was wearing a hood.

I assumed I was dreaming the first night but remembered the mysteriously unlocking door to the other apartment and decided to jam the bedroom door with a chair.

It still opened and my visitor and leaned in as before.

This went on every night until the last, when I awoke in the early hours and decided not to look towards the door.

This time I felt an ice-cold hand slip into mine and hold it for about ten seconds.
Line, Even if you don't want to see me, I'm here!

None of this fazed me. I told my friend about it and halfway through the week offered to swap beds so they could see it too but they politely declined.

The old Palace Hotel in Manchester, now a Kimpton. The mezzanine level was terrifying and the lights came on in my room during the night.
