Why on Mumsnet?.....

Ok I really don't know where to post this but I am slightly baffled by the following:

  1. when someone posts a thread (and they have name changed for it) why do they have to mention 'oh name changed because it's very outing' 'oh can't tell where the bridezilla's wedding took place because it's very outing' and then goes on tell all the details.....I mean if the person is reading your thread they will know straightaway that you were talking about them...changing/mentioning user name will not make a difference right? Because nearly everyone here uses unique usernames. Unless it's a Mumsnet policy to mention that?

Also is it essential to use abbreviations like 'for dear'/ child DC...is it Mumsnet policy or is it just a casual Mumsnet thing?

Someone please shed some light. Cheers

What a welcome Sad

Do check out Classics, some are hilarious.

Also a thread can be derailed with people troll hunting and a genuine poster may not get the advice they are looking for because of that.

the whole 'to avoid trolls, to be taken seriously' does not justify because I could have started this thread with 'name changed for this thread' and you guys would have never known that I did not name change at all.

"Name changed for this" at least indicates that someone has decent familiarity with MN. Even if they're a first time poster, they must have been lurking plenty. Doesn't mean they're not a troll, but it's a sort of a shibboleth.

I am a first time poster so how was i suppose to post this thread without being judged for a troll?

Well, usually people post on existing threads for a while before they start their own threads. Yes sometimes people come to MN because they've got a specific problem they want to ask advice over, and have been recommended to come here. But most people use MN as a chat forum. I probably posted on a daily basis for six months before I started my first thread, just because I didn't have any need to start my own threads and was happy to just chat.

People mention they have name changed because the villagers on MN are suspicious of people who aren’t local.

@ClashCityRocker

Coz otherwise everyone says 'interesting first post' whilst stroking their collective chins.

And then the thread gets deleted for troll hunting.

Not true at all! Change mine frequently and never had this said to me

You're not coming across too well here.

You're over thinking it and being rude to pp who have taken time out to explain things to you.

Chainson · 17/06/2021 21:39

I really, really don't understand how this is difficult and now I'm wondering if you're on some bizarre windup yourself.
If you namechange for the reasons I gave and then post something that you know, as a longstanding MNer will cause other posters to search for you and realise it's your only post and call you out on it you mention it in the OP. No, it doesn't stop trolls from doing the same but it stops your thread being filled with trollhunting. It's very not hard to understand.

OnTheBoardwalk · 17/06/2021 23:01

MNHQ will also be able to link your new user name to the one you usually use so can help remove the troll accusations

Yeah I know MNHQ say they can’t vouch if the person is real but I reckon they can hopefully mention I’m not a troll if I change my username to say my immediate neighbours are dicks but don’t want them searching my other posts

Really difficult to understand? The reason is because nearly all of you keep on repeating the same thing, like you guys are on some loop lol. Once again I am not asking for the reasons I am asking why mention it in your thread. If someone wants to check out your username history they will do it anyway without paying so much attention to whether they mentioned 'name changed for this' in their thread.

Why don't people quietly change the name with out mentioning 'name changed for this'? Again I am not trying to boss around as to what they should or should not do...just trying to understand the logic behind it. That too politely.

Rude? Just because I don't agree with the explanations since no one has answered the question yet. Actually you sound like a lot of posters I have come across on various threads i.e. rude.

Lol at 'taken time out'...you sound like these posters left their jobs/responsibility to come here and post for me.

Maybe you are someone who posted here earlier, name changed and came back to write this haha.

So far I have heard different reasons why some posters think some posters do it. How about posters who actually do it and shed some light on it. And please I don't want to know the reason behind name changing.

Plenty of people have answered the question.

So many people have answered the questions you had! Some have gone into great detail for you with examples. Not sure what is so difficult to understand. Confused
