Why on Mumsnet?.....

Revolver123 · 16/06/2021 22:26

Ok I really don't know where to post this but I am slightly baffled by the following:

  1. when someone posts a thread (and they have name changed for it) why do they have to mention 'oh name changed because it's very outing' 'oh can't tell where the bridezilla's wedding took place because it's very outing' and then goes on tell all the details.....I mean if the person is reading your thread they will know straightaway that you were talking about them...changing/mentioning user name will not make a difference right? Because nearly everyone here uses unique usernames. Unless it's a Mumsnet policy to mention that?

Also is it essential to use abbreviations like 'for dear'/ child DC...is it Mumsnet policy or is it just a casual Mumsnet thing?

Someone please shed some light. Cheers

You must be new here

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2021 22:31

None of what you've said is MN policy.

People name change because they don't want threads linked with their previous posts. If someone does recognise the situation they are posting about they can't go searching through their posting history.

As for the abbreviations, like any forum MN has its own conventions and a style that's evolved over the years. There's no rule to say you have to use them, it's up to you.

Russell19 · 16/06/2021 22:32

People say they have name changed so others know its not their first and only post (which always usually hints troll!)

NBFJ364N · 16/06/2021 22:40

is this even the correct topic....the unexplained??

At least they didn't chuck it in AIBU.
QuimKardashian · 16/06/2021 22:49

As if anyone cares if their name has changed??
I frequently change mine so I can be a new person every time!! I never feel the need to announce it FFS

elQuintoConyo · 16/06/2021 22:50

I'm just here for Fox Mulder teacup pictures...

RubyGoat · 16/06/2021 22:50

But you don't know what sort of things are usually posted in The Unexplained, or how to check that? I hazard a guess you've not been a reader very long, or not very much.

merryhouse · 16/06/2021 22:50

Yes, they fully expect people to recognise the situation. That's not normally the problem (the ones where they're telling us something the other people aren't supposed to know are a different matter and usually get zapped).

They name-change so that the people in their life who have recognised the situation can't then go back and read all their other posts complaining about their in-laws or confessing an affair or a dead body or talking about their lottery win.

Yeah that's ok if some one wishes to change their username for a thread but my question was why mention it 'oh I have name changed....'....why the need to mention that you have changed your username?
OP posts:
ClashCityRocker · 16/06/2021 22:53

Coz otherwise everyone says 'interesting first post' whilst stroking their collective chins.

And then the thread gets deleted for troll hunting.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 16/06/2021 22:54

Often people name change for unusual situations and if they don't say that all the smarty pants troll hunters will think they are so big and clever by posting things like “interestin first post”

ShowOfHands · 16/06/2021 22:54

As @Russell19 has already explained, it's so people know it's not a troll. Or a wendigo. Or a djinn. Or a restless spirit.

I tried to look which category I can post it under, could not find any so posted under this category as this was 'unexplained' to me.:)....yup not been a very long reader :)

Ignore the snarking about posting in the wrong topic, OP.
People "namechange for this" to mark their territory, like a dog pissed on a wall. So they can't be accused of being new (which as you've seen is akin to being a hardened crim round here) and at the same time they can cite their credentials- often the "namechanged for this" (as I'm so very spesh that on a website with hundreds of thousands of users, my next door neighbour Ethel will spot me immediately) will be accompanied by a list of the most puerile threads ever posted on here, like admitting your participation in the crap that was Penis Beaker is anything to brag about.

There is a list of usual MN acronyms somewhere. Not rules, just general accepted usage.

HeavenHotel · 16/06/2021 22:57

People say they have name changed so if you search their posting history and see no other posts, you don't immediately think! TROLL!!

Although obviously if you are a troll, you would also say that!

Like a PP mentioned if you don't put you've name changed, posters will always put "Interesting first post" insinuating that they are a troll!

Confused?? Hahah

HeavenHotel · 16/06/2021 23:00

And really don't worry what category you've posted under! I've been over 15 years and still managed to post on the wrong category today!

Revolver123 · 16/06/2021 23:27

Hmmmm

I think a person who has been on Mumsnet for several years with several posts/threads credited to their username can be a troll too not just someone with first post.

(And no I ain't a troll....if anyone wants to believe lol)

I mean if I a friend of mine makes a thread about me sharing all the intimate/secret stuff I told her/him...I will be 99% sure that it must be that friend of mine who must have posted this ..the whole 'name changed for this thread' will go in the bin for me..

Oh I guess each to their own...thanks for all the replies though

Well yes but you won't be able to search their previous posts if they've name changed.
AdaColeman · 16/06/2021 23:39

People mention that they've name changed and often support this with "Pom bears, Mexican house thief, cancel the cheque" type statements, to prove that they're long standing MN members, in the hope that their post demands serious consideration rather than being ripped to shreds because of poor grammar.

The acronyms are widely used across the internet, but they are not compulsory, only use them if you want to. There is a list at the top of the page, if you don't know what they mean.

This board is really for Woo Stuff, like poltergeist and ectoplasm.

If you're thinking of starting a thread about why people with no children join MN, don't bother! Wink Wink

Revolver123 · 16/06/2021 23:50

@BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 but there would be no need to search their other posts as I can tell 99% who they are by reading the thread they posted about me.....

OP posts:
Revolver123 · 16/06/2021 23:52

Do you understand how this site works? Do you know you can search for a poster and find all of their previous posts? You can, so if I post about a very identifying situation about my sister's wedding which has been cancelled due to her having the first case of Leprosy seen in the British Isles for a century, my sister and several family members/ friends on both sides all have young children and we regularly discuss Mumsnet they may find my post about that but they won't find the posts where I slag them off, or I ask about my husband's infidelity or my recurrent thrush. If I don't namechange they'll be able to see everything I posted, if I don't say I've namechanged other posters will search for me and realise I have no posts and accuse me of lying. Whenever these posts come up I always think the poster thinks they're so smart but mustn't be smart enough to realise anyone can see all your posts if they search for your username.
