Weird telephone calls

Wondering if anyone can come up with a logical explanation for the weird phone calls I have been receiving. So my dh and I are not sure but about eight to ten years ago I started to receive telephone calls, always from the same number, where a guy would say 'hello Elliot' I would obviously say sorry who and he would say 'Elliot is that you'. I would say wrong number the first few times and hang up and then it became quite frequent and we think it was always Saturdays it happened. So I blocked the number and then I would randomly unblock the number and they would start up again. My dh got quite annoyed and phoned the person back but again just saying hello Elliot and no other response. It wasn't an old voice if that makes sense. I mean it wasn't an elderly person who had got the wrong number. It became quite sinister. Again blocked and then every couple of years when I got a new phone and the number would be unblocked it would start up again and I would block again. You kind of forget about until again I just got a new phone after three years and on Saturday one of the first calls I had was again the same guy asking for Elliot!!How is this possible??? How would the said person just happen to try the number the very Saturday I got a new phone and am I right to now feel creeped out by this? What would you do?

(Anything else Creepy thats happens in your house?😕

satnighttakeaway · 04/12/2020 21:42

@PancakesAndSyrup

Could you call them off a private number and see if they say something different when they don't know that it's you who is calling?
Im guessing you've already done that as this has been going on for so long, I agree with saying that you'll get Eliot and see what happens

Jiltedjohnsjulie so hilarious! Have you anything constructive to offer or are you just finding yourself too funny to help. Last time I had a nuisance caller I told them that if they ever called me again I'd have them kneecapped. It did help that the caller was acquaintance and he knew that this was possibly not an idle threat.

Does that help?

StanfordPines · 04/12/2020 21:46

How annoying.
You know you are going to have to unblock it now and just get your DH to answer any unknown numbers, just for our satisfaction.

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:51

Jiltedjohnsjulie oh your so big and brave! How many people have you kneecapped? Can you be hired?

So I used the live in another part of the country and we have just searched online and the number is linked to an amateur football team called say 'old Edinburgh football team' (not the real city obviously as could out me) on a site called VYmaps.com I am calling it tomorrow and will report back. Although it gives coordinates for London. I have to know who this is now as it confirms it must be personal.

Can you call on a withheld number and see what they say when answering?

yaboo · 04/12/2020 22:02

i have one of these... an old lady rings and asks for 'Margaret'. I've tried explaining there's no Margaret here, several times, but she still rings. 11pm, every few weeks. And sometimes, at 8am in the morning, too. I've had other people explain there's no Margaret here, too. Happens so regularly I recognise her number and just ignore her.

VirtualLearning · 04/12/2020 22:02

I do hope you can get to the bottom of it if it helps you as sorry it has been so unsettling.

VirtualLearning · 04/12/2020 22:04

Did you know any football players where you used to live?

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 22:06

Thanks it has been really unsettling this time. Feel bad for my dh as he must think has she given her number out etc. Now it links back to the city we lived in I can't let it drop. Dh is going to call tomorrow from the landline withholding our number as I'm a scaredy-cat.

Kalula · 04/12/2020 22:08

People have asked you a few times but I didn't see you respond; does it sound like a recording, like a 'soundboard' type of thing, or does it sound like he is saying it in real time, if that makes sense?

Goldensnitchy · 04/12/2020 22:10

@Staffy1

Start ringing them up every Friday and asking for Mildred.
😂

Putting the number into WhatsApp is a good idea though

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 22:11

Yaboo oh that's sad but must get annoying for you.

Don't know any football players from there and I can't find it now on google but I'm sure the company we found years ago was from the southwest. The team is mentioned on Facebook so will do a bit of digging on that to see if anything obvious comes up but the number entered on Facebook doesn't bring up that page or any person.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 04/12/2020 22:12

It could well be someone with a learning disability or acquired brain injury or dementia and there’s nothing sinister to it at all. I would try not to get carried away OP and certainly wouldn’t set your DH on them

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 22:14

Kalula no it doesn't sound automated and honestly can't remember what his response was when we first called it as it was years ago but I'm sure they just said they were looking for Elliot and wrong number but persistently called back until I blocked. This time he did sound like he was outside.

This is so odd! Must be really unsettling OP.

purplerainox · 04/12/2020 22:23

This is sooo creepy! I really hope you get to the bottom of this as soon as possible! I would personally have to contact none emergency police line to see if they can investigate into who it could be as surely it's harassment

Princesspickle777 · 04/12/2020 22:26

Hmm, just a thought. They call on a Saturday afternoon and the number seems to be linked to a football club?. Could it be maybe that Elliot plays for that team and they try and contact him with the number they have on record (obviously wrong) to see why he hasn’t turned up?. It’s a bit strange it happens every time you unblock the number but could also just be coincidence.

VirtualLearning · 04/12/2020 22:27

Did you try seeing if the number is on WhatsApp as someone above said in case there’s a photo ? I really hope you can stop wondering soon

Hmm I can assure you this is very real and not utter rubbish. If you look if you have a saved number and block it then it will forever remain blocked as you transfer over to a new handset. However if you get a random number call and block it then when you get a new handset only the saved contact blocked list transfer over. Why always the one with the troll hunting? Confused

Just put the number into WhatsApp and it confirmed with a tick but picture is blank?

VirtualLearning · 04/12/2020 22:36

well done trying WhatsApp in case gave a lead. That’s a shame and I am really hoping you get an answer

ShalomToYouJackie · 04/12/2020 22:36

Not true. If the number has been blocked on the device, then you get a new handset, even if the same SIM has been moved over, you would still need to reblock the numbers again on the new device.

Unless you'd blocked the numbers directly with your SIM provider.
