Weird telephone calls

Wondering if anyone can come up with a logical explanation for the weird phone calls I have been receiving. So my dh and I are not sure but about eight to ten years ago I started to receive telephone calls, always from the same number, where a guy would say 'hello Elliot' I would obviously say sorry who and he would say 'Elliot is that you'. I would say wrong number the first few times and hang up and then it became quite frequent and we think it was always Saturdays it happened. So I blocked the number and then I would randomly unblock the number and they would start up again. My dh got quite annoyed and phoned the person back but again just saying hello Elliot and no other response. It wasn't an old voice if that makes sense. I mean it wasn't an elderly person who had got the wrong number. It became quite sinister. Again blocked and then every couple of years when I got a new phone and the number would be unblocked it would start up again and I would block again. You kind of forget about until again I just got a new phone after three years and on Saturday one of the first calls I had was again the same guy asking for Elliot!!How is this possible??? How would the said person just happen to try the number the very Saturday I got a new phone and am I right to now feel creeped out by this? What would you do?

Right I'm going to unblock and see if they ring over the next few weeks. If they do and dh is in he is going to have a very stern word and I'm going to report to EE and maybe even the police because I just can't think or any reasonable explanation. Also I remember at the start we wondered if my number had previously been someone else's number but then after texting and calling them to tell them politely to stop calling they have obviously persisted. Given it's been three years and now it happened again it is definitely cause for concern and is no longer funny but utterly creepy!

Can you search the number on Facebook and see if a profile comes up? Really odd, I wouldn't like it either.

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:01

Orange I did actually get a new number with this new iphone but I thought it was less hassle to update all our accounts, doctors, hospital etc so EE got it changed over to keep my old number and now I wish I had kept the new number. I also think you shouldn't have to change your number because someone is having a laugh at upsetting you but it might be the only option.

Hopefully he will call back, try the 'hang on, I'll just grab Elliot for you' route and see what happens. If it is a prank, it might throw them off.. xx

hellolittlebaby · 04/12/2020 21:07

is it the same voice/message and possibly a recording? If so there's a podcast called reply all where they investigated something similar and I'm sure it turned out that it was scammers on the other end and they managed to make money out of it somehow... wish I could remember the episode name!

fuzzymoon · 04/12/2020 21:09

I would just talk to them.
It could be someone having the last known number for someone who went missing / disappeared and they continually ring in the hope of finding them again but the number is wrong.
It could be a recorded sales thing.
A bot.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 04/12/2020 21:09

This is SO creepy, I really want them to ring so you pretend you are Elliot and double bluff them. And then update us all in detail.

Camphillgirl · 04/12/2020 21:13

Save the number as nuisance call Elliott so you know never to answer call when you see the caller ID on your phone.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 04/12/2020 21:13

It's fucking weird how they have your new number when you change numbers. That makes me think it's someone you know.

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:13

Sorry busy googling how to see my blocked list and it seems I have a quite a few but only a handful of mobile numbers so will work my way through them and check who they are with 'who called me' The first one was an insurance scam but I always block them. Thanks for the suggestions and wish now I had let my husband call him back on Saturday now. Will update if I find out who it is and if they call again will keep him talking this time or let dh speak to him.

Another - I don't have a new number. I automatically got a new sim with new iPhone but wanted to keep my old number so you call EE and they change it to your old number and that's the one they called on. My number hasn't changed in about ten years.

I will save the number as nuisance Elliot as that apparently means it will always remain blocked even when you change handsets as your contacts automatically update. As I hadn't saved it as a contact then blocked when I changed my phone the random blocked like claim callls etc. automatically don't carry over on the blocked list. If I save it as a name then the block will stay on. At least I have learnt something lol.

Definitely say you're Elliot next time & see what they say!

AllAboutHallowsEve · 04/12/2020 21:22

Is this on a mobile phone or landline?

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:24

Mobile

AllAboutHallowsEve · 04/12/2020 21:24

Ahhh just seen it's your mobile phone. In that case, block the number. Out of interest, is your DH ever next to you when you get these calls?

agradecida · 04/12/2020 21:24

Have you got WhatsApp? If you save the number does it show any picture or anything in there?

AllAboutHallowsEve · 04/12/2020 21:25

And write down their number and the dates and time when they call and keep this info safe, just in case you need to report them.

weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:26

Yeah the majority of times dh is home. It always seems to be Saturday afternoon I get them.

OP posts:
weirdcallsforme · 04/12/2020 21:29

I never thought of WhatsApp but the next time he calls I will definitely save the number and try WhatsApp and also search Facebook like someone else suggested. If it comes up with someone I will be phoning them and asking what the hell they are playing at!

Start ringing them up every Friday and asking for Mildred.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 04/12/2020 21:30

Start ringing them up every Friday and asking for Mildred Grin

PancakesAndSyrup · 04/12/2020 21:30

Could you call them off a private number and see if they say something different when they don't know that it's you who is calling?

HelpMeh · 04/12/2020 21:33

@Staffy1

Start ringing them up every Friday and asking for Mildred.

thosetalesofunexpected · 04/12/2020 21:36

Hi Op
Does sound quite Creepy 😡
I Certainly would not like this.

Next time you have weird tel call asking for Eliot
You need to buy a loud whistle or have something that creates a fucking loud noise.. 😂

Or just Screech like a wild banchee down the tel

Do this a couple/few times..
(It will be like nuisance tel caller has fallen off the face of the earth, L.o.l 😂

Or

Just say I will tel( 999 Police, if you do not stop doing this ,"Hello is that Elliot" routine ..

VirtualLearning · 04/12/2020 21:36

pancakesandsyrup is onto something . I would do this and perhaps then later also start the idea above asking for Mildred for good measure
