Riding clothes suggestions for a hijab wearing woman?

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 20:52

The hijab is the least relevant aspect to be honest, I just plonk the hat on top. But I’m not keen on the tight riding bottoms! I’m a beginner and only starting to think about my riding outfit. So far I’ve been wearing loose, thin joggers, which seem fine I think? But maybe they’re ok for now but will get uncomfortable if (hopefully when) I get more serious, do a bit of cantering etc.

Similarly, on top, I prefer loose clothing which is bum covering. I feel like I have a bit more flex when it comes to my top half whereas the riding world seems pretty set on breeches/jodhpurs (which isn’t happening unless I go down the old school flappy jodhpur route which would be entertaining for the yard I’m sure). Any ideas?? Can I just stick with my joggers? Would half chaps be a good idea?

Thanks!

Anything loose flappy is dangerous
You need jodhpurs or breeches

WTAFdoodles · 19/02/2021 21:47

@Beaniecats yet Bedouins ride for miles in long flowy clothes. Tight jodhs are a cultural thing, surely?

AdHominemNonSequitur · 19/02/2021 21:54

Any trousers are fine as long as they are thick, don't move around too much and don't have an inside seam. But I guess that's basically jodhpurs. They are sort of made of a material that isn't mega slippy too I think. You def don't want to wear things that will flap about too much ,some do spook. Cotton dungarees over thick leggings might work. I'm very jealous. I miss riding.

ZiggZagg · 19/02/2021 22:02

Jodhpurs with a long shirt maybe to cover the bum! Maybe a jumper over the shirt Smile

Honeyroar · 19/02/2021 22:04

Could you just wear a long too or coat that covers your bottom? Jodhpurs really are comfortable and practical to ride in (otherwise I’d never wear anything so tight myself!)

dancemom · 19/02/2021 22:12

How about these, not so fitted as jodhpurs?

lastqueenofscotland · 19/02/2021 22:17

What about full chaps over jodhpurs?
Racing breeches are a slightly looser fit as well

BooFuckingHoo2 · 19/02/2021 22:17

Sorry if I’m being naive but is the issue you don’t want to show your bum off in tight trousers?

Unfortunately the issue is if you wore a long coat for example, that is very likely to flap on the horse’s behind and spook it. Equally even loose trousers will probably cling and ride up if you’re doing rising trot/canter.

Maypole245 · 19/02/2021 22:22

What about a riding skirt over jodhpurs/riding tights? There are quite a few out there for varying budgets...some are really elegant (not my waterproof one though Grin

rosettesforjill · 19/02/2021 22:38

I haven't ridden for a while but I think I would go for something loose over jodhs. I have had really horrible chafing from riding in trousers that weren't tight fitting enough!

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 22:41

A riding skirt sounds perfect! I’ve not come across them before.

@dancemom were you going to link something?

Full chaps is another good option, I was sure if people wore them just for yard work or also for riding.

It’s not just about covering my bum, I’m not keen on super tight clothes on my legs.

My joggers are fitted at the ankle so I’ve not noticed them riding up too much when doing riding trot but they’re thin as I’ve said which it seems could become and issue later on.

Thanks for all the ideas! Off to Google racing breeches (which seems a bit ridiculous for a beginner but anyway!)

Some US sites have ‘modest’ riding skirts as worn by Amish-type sects.

Long riding coats tend to be ‘split’ and have internal straps to be buckled around the legs to stop flappage

Or you could go full side-saddle plus riding habit a la Lady Mary, which would be amazing.

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 22:48

@dancemom yes those are a good option too, with a bum-covering top Grin thanks!

@Mumsnut Amish look is probably about right Grin side saddle on the other hand, don’t fancy my chances being able to ride on one of those!

What boots are you wearing? I can’t imagine stuffing joggers into long boots is very comfortable.
Traditional hunting breeches are tight below the calf and baggy on the thigh but they are expensive.

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 22:50

I’m super excited about discovering these riding skirts. I knew mumsnet was the place!
Thanks so much for all your ideas and tips! I’ll add a wide variety of riding wear to my ever-burgeoning riding budget Blush

Didn't women in Westerns wear a divided skirt? A bit like culottes? www.theridingskirtcompany.co.uk/

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 22:54

@Polkadotties I’m not wearing proper boots yet, I’ve only had a few lessons but I was thinking of getting some ankle boots once non-essential shops reopen.

What about a long riding coat (with leg straps to stop it flapping) over the jodhpurs? No idea if they come in a lightweight version rather than oilskin though!

alpinia · 19/02/2021 23:08

OP have you tried searching online for what horsey women in gulf states wear to ride in? It might give you some ideas, though I seem to recall most wearing some form of jodphurs with a long loose top over it.

I also saw a TV show with Mexican women in some sort of traditional dress and they had those culottes, had a rather glamorous effect and looked comfortable enough. Though I guess it won't be quite so elegant at 9am in the chucking rain on a Sunday morning on Bob the fat cob... Grin

Cherryblossomss · 19/02/2021 23:12

A riding coat also sounds good, will have a look.

I haven’t really looking into what women in the gulf wear as I’m hoping to find something that works in this country (so I won’t look too ‘out there’) and which can be easily bought here. But I’ll take a look in any case as I might get some good ideas.

I've found a couple, but they're not cheap!

This one, possibly

Or these are gorgeous, but very pricy!

As an aside, I've always wanted to try sidesadle, but haven't ridden for years now.

GuppytheCat · 19/02/2021 23:19

I’m neither a hijab wearer nor a rider, but I have a sports skirt courtesy of Icebreaker that’s very light, stretchy and non flappy.

Rivergreen · 19/02/2021 23:20

Men's jodhpurs are generally looser fitting, if you aren't too curvy?

Riding skirts could be an option, but talk to your instructor first if you are going to opt for the longer style that goes over the back of the saddle. Not all horses would be very happy with the feel of the fabric behind the saddle, you don't want to get bucked off! You can get shorter ones that you sit on, bit they tend to be thicker material like fleece because they are used for keeping your legs warm out hacking, so you might have to search for another option in summer.
