My horse died today

Just never woke up from a snooze in the sun Sad, I know I will be grateful for that in time but right now it is such a shock.

She was really well, 25 years old and I have owned her for 24.

A true friend, we had an incredible bond and had a lot of fun over the years. 😔

I could sit my toddler on her and she became angelic but was a tricky (lovely though) ride the rest of the time.

We did so much together, she was completely fab in her day.

Other than my three horsey friends no one I know seems to get why I am so bloody sad, honestly!

I so sorry. What a dreadful shock. Flowers

AnarchyKitty · 27/06/2018 17:55

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. One blessing is that she went peacefully. 24 years is like having a child from birth through to the end of uni. Of course you will be upset. I don't have horses but understand totally. Treasure the memories of her. Flowers

Imfinehowareyou · 27/06/2018 17:56

💐 for you. What a horrible shock. I am SO sorry for your loss. You are right, in time you will be thankful she went in this way but that's not a comfort right now. Look after yourself.

JontyDoggle37 · 27/06/2018 17:57

What a lovely way to go, for what sounds like a lovely horse. So sorry for your loss Flowers

CosmicCanary · 27/06/2018 17:59

My heart would be broken too.

I know it will not make you feel better niw but in time her snoozing in the sun will bring you comfort.

I'm so sorry to hear this, it is a big shock to lose such a loved animal and member of the family. As you say it is some consolation for them to pass on not waking up, but still a huge loss which will take time to come to terms with. X x

Perfectly1mperfect · 27/06/2018 18:28

So sad. Sorry for your loss.

You must be very shocked and sad right now, but I think you are right than in time, you will be very grateful that she just fell asleep. For now though, it's very normal to just feel sad because you loved her and will miss her.

I am sure you have some lovely memories that will help you too.

Wolfiefan · 27/06/2018 18:32

I am so so sorry for your loss. I'm still sad over horses lost many months ago. Not even mine but a relative's. I have tail hair to make a memento out of but can't manage to send it off.
They are family. They take up so much of your life and time and attention and love too.
24 happy years with you and an everlasting snooze. Many horses are nowhere near as lucky.
Be kind to yourself. Grieving is hard. Flowers

Theycouldhavechoseneve · 27/06/2018 18:35

Oh so sorry for the loss of your girl. We all have to go and a snooze in the sun is the best way x

GothMummy · 27/06/2018 18:35

I'm so sorry. I lost my horse on 5th April and I'm still heartbroken. 24 years is a long time and your life will be turned upside down now x

DramaAlpaca · 27/06/2018 18:36

I'm so sorry Flowers

OliviaStabler · 27/06/2018 18:38

I am so terribly sorry Flowers

Ploppymoodypants · 27/06/2018 18:39

I am do sorry to hear your sad news. Such a shock as well, but like you say, you will be grateful in time she didn’t suffer and you have been spared the decision that haunts all of us that live and cherish our ailing oldies, who have been with us through thick and thin. I have had my horse far longer than I have had any boyfriend or husband so far! It completely understand how devatsted you must feel. Just go with it, and know it’s okay to be sad, and it’s a reflection of how much you loved her. She will be waiting for you on the Bridge I am sure 🌈

Scoopofchaff · 27/06/2018 18:43

Gabilan · 27/06/2018 18:46

Sorry for your loss. 24 years is such a large part of anyone's life. Give yourself time to grieve. It is a huge shock.

Yogagirl123 · 27/06/2018 18:51

So sorry Flowers take comfort that she was warm and peaceful when she passed away. It’s always too early, to lose a loyal friend I know. Sending you a big hug, you must be heartbroken.

theoldpatagoniaexpress · 27/06/2018 19:01

Thank you everyone, I knew you would all be what I needed tonight. I am sad but a few hours later already grateful for her just going to sleep.

I will never have to worry about giving her one good last summer (as I have done with others in the past but not her yet).

She had form for snoozing, was very inclined to loaf around in the heat. I remember when I was first bringing her into work as a four year old, one day I actually went back into the house three times because she refused to budge. I wasn't hard enough to throw a bucket of water on her as was often suggested!

She was such fun, let herself into the kitchen more than a few times as a youngster, once stole a loaf bread (I sometimes tied her up in our inner garden). Built like a tank ID/TB but with the persona of a Labrador in hand.

I have got one left, now a companion, I can't imagine having another one to be honest, I am nearly 50 and have had horses since I was little.

End of an era. So many happy memories. If I had to choose just one it would be her, she was very special.

So sorry for the loss of your lovely girl. It must be a shock, but as you've said, at some point you'll be glad she went peacefully in her sleep in the sun, and that you didn't have to make that awful decision yourself. Not much consolation now though, I know. Flowers

Wolfiefan · 27/06/2018 19:45

She sounds really the horse of a lifetime. Bread stealing!! The pain fades. Hold on to the memories.

lostplot · 27/06/2018 20:50

You poor thing, I am so sorry for your loss. You sound like a lovely owner and she had the best life with you. My old boy is 25 and I am dreading losing him, I hope he can go while snoozing in the sun. Take care.

bigsighall · 27/06/2018 21:05

Sorry for your loss. These things are always bloody horrible and whilst it was likely a lovely peaceful end for your horse it’s a massive shock for you. We usually get time to say goodbye. Don’t underestimate how traumatic that can be for you.

clatteringhooves · 27/06/2018 21:42

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Sending love and hugs x

clumsyduck · 27/06/2018 21:46

Oh I'm really sorry sending a big unmumsnetty hug Flowers

Japanesejazz · 27/06/2018 21:51

So sorry. Awful shock for you but a peaceful end for your horse.
