Old pony books

Just that really. I had hundreds and I wish I still had them. Pullein-Thompson sisters, Monica Dickens, Dorian Williams, Patricia Leitch, Ruby Murphy, Flicka, Sarah Herbert...and memories of some whose authors and titles I can't remember. Does anyone still have theirs? What was the one where a girl moved into a house with her parents to find they had agreed to buy the pony with the house? I loved that one!

There's a Facebook page called Our Old Pony Books where people sell them. I've bought a few over the last few years.

This thread has brought to mind a book called something like Pantomime Ponies, I think there was a sequel. I loved them and the Follyfoot books.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/06/2018 21:26

I loved Jinny at Finmory and desperately wanted my parents to sell up and move to the Highlands so I could rescue an Arab and become her. Selfishly, they refused to give up their jobs and shift.
I hated the Jill books as they were too cosy but I loved Fly By Night as Ruth seemed like me (we had the new build estate house only my ruddy parents wouldn't have moved to the twisty pear tree house at the end).

I adored Jinny, Jill and the Saddle Club. I really wish I’d kept them for DD.

ReadytoTalk · 28/06/2018 16:18

What about the hollywell stables series? Kind of like an updated follyfoot.

StaffiesAndPonies · 28/06/2018 16:26

I read the Jill books over and over and had to put sellotape on the spines to keep them together. She was a bad influence on me though as I grew up sarcastic and intolerant of drippy people.

MipMipMip · 28/06/2018 16:35

Didn't get on with Hollywell. Just didn't gel for me.

Squirrel26 · 28/06/2018 20:19

I loved Fly By Night too. I think I liked Jimmy at the time, but looking back now she seems like she’d be really quite irritating (was there one where she was supposed to be watching some endangered birds eggs but she went off with a ‘friend’ to see some ponies and all the eggs got taken?)

MipMipMip · 29/06/2018 11:58

There was, they were Ofsprey.

I mostly read the older books. Anyone remember I Wanted A Pony? Particularly good as she becomes an ok rider, not great, and recognises that about herself. Also she sold her silver buttons because she didn't understand how auctions worked. Grin

MrsChollySawcutt · 29/06/2018 13:21

Yes, I liked I Wanted a Pony and it's follow-on Three Ponies & Shannon was one of my favourites. I loved the idea of having three ponies (Serenade, Symphony and Solo) and a gangly Irish Wolfhound (Shannon).

MipMipMip · 29/06/2018 16:12

I had no idea there was a sequel! Off to find that now.

Love the name btw. Grin

On the other hand, as it is £454.11 I might just keep an eye out in charity shops!

MrsChollySawcutt · 29/06/2018 18:45

How much?!

There are a few books in the Augusta series, the others are 3 ponies and Shannon, A Pony to School and Only a Pony.

Have you tried looking on Abebooks? Paperback copies available on there from £5.26.

I warn you it's highly addictive and you will end up with acres of old books!

Slinky, I had forgotten all about mummy's chantung coat! Loved the Jill books -bought some for DD, but she wasn't remotely interested, but at least I have some back in the house.

Also, to the poster who mentioned WHSmith's Win a Pony competition - yes I remember this. I used to enter every year. I would love to know who won - what was it like to win a pony???

friendlyflicka · 29/06/2018 19:12

I am very good at getting rid of things but I kept all my old pony books - huge collection. Think I love Monica Edwards and K M Peyton most. K M Peyton is about 90 and still writes now.

I am 50 and got my first horse as a 40 year old. And I still feel like a kid in a pony book when I am with him or think about him. Complete dream come true

bluetongue · 30/06/2018 11:35

Loved the Jinny books. Still disappointed I was such a frugal child and borrowed so many from the library instead of buying them. Part of me still wants to move to Scotland Grin

Also loved Fly by Night and The Team and bought hardcover copies from my high school library cheap when they were selling old books. I remember being shocked that Ruth was feeling under the weather because of ‘the curse’ in The Team. Not usually something mentioned in pony books.

friendlyflicka · 30/06/2018 12:54

bluetongue, Jinny is why my horse is an arab
