Old pony books

Just that really. I had hundreds and I wish I still had them. Pullein-Thompson sisters, Monica Dickens, Dorian Williams, Patricia Leitch, Ruby Murphy, Flicka, Sarah Herbert...and memories of some whose authors and titles I can't remember. Does anyone still have theirs? What was the one where a girl moved into a house with her parents to find they had agreed to buy the pony with the house? I loved that one!

Ploppy I want to ride with you! How fab!

MipMipMip · 26/06/2018 08:58

Did anyone else read Three Jays books by Par Smyth? She put herself as a character in it as a host got the three kids (I think she was related to 2 but not jackie).

PestoSurfissimos · 26/06/2018 09:01

MipMipMip yes!!! I have all the 3 Jays books, they’re falling apart a bit coz I got them second hand from my old next-door-neighbour when I was a child. The one where they did The Prince Phillip Cup at Wembley was my favourite Smile

Luxembourgmama · 26/06/2018 09:06

I still have alot of them and I try to buy more online or at book fairs whenever I see them. I hope my daughter loves them as much as I do. I still read them if i'm having a bad day they cheer me up.

Luxembourgmama · 26/06/2018 09:08

I found a lovely hardback old copy of one of the three jays series a while ago. Was delire.

MrsChollySawcutt · 26/06/2018 09:51

Ploppy that sounds marvellous! Have changed my username in honour of Jill.

MipMipMip · 26/06/2018 10:18

I only read a couple of the three hat's- the was one when they went tracking and got accused of spying on racehorses for form. I won far what would have happened if they hadn't had a famous equestrian to vouch for them? Grin They were about 11 at the time...

PestoSurfissimos · 26/06/2018 10:26

I remember that one, they were in Ireland on the border I think between North & South.

BusterTheBulldog · 26/06/2018 10:28

Did anyone read the Caroline Akrill eventing trilogy books? They were my absolute favs! I still reread them now as an adult. Also loved her ‘not quite a horsewoman’ column and her later books.

Her0utdoors · 26/06/2018 10:30

This takes me back! I could never track down the 3Jays first book - Jaquelin Rides For a Fall (?). I always admired Pat Smythe, she achieved alot a a sports woman. I also loved the Moorland Mousey series, I spent alot of time as a teenager exploring Exmoor with my pony.

PestoSurfissimos · 26/06/2018 10:38

You can get it from Amazon

here

Lefroy · 26/06/2018 10:55

Jill, Jimmy, The Saddle Club! It almost makes me sad my children have their own pony so they will never know the feeling of longing whilst reading pony books!

There's a TV series on Amazon (Free Rein maybe) that I very much enjoyed, American teen stays with British grandfather, tames wild horse at local stables, solves crime, is a natural rider etc it really appealed to my 12 year old self!

Lefroy · 26/06/2018 10:55

Have a look at Jane Badger books on Facebook, she posts all the classics.

Her0utdoors · 26/06/2018 11:12

Pesto, thank you! Flowers

Ploppymoodypants · 26/06/2018 11:30

Lefroy, I am the same. Feel a bit sad for DD that she has a pony because she will never understand the longing and hoping, the scrounging rides on any ancient old cob in the village, or mucking out at riding school in exchange for a ride, and the delirious excitement of realising you have your own pony at long last. (Complete first world problems all of my own creation there 😁)

PestoSurfissimos · 26/06/2018 13:30

You’re welcome!

SusanWalker · 26/06/2018 14:39

I read the books with longing, but discovered that I much preferred reading about riding than actually doing it!

slinkysaluki · 26/06/2018 16:47

Just bought s copy of Jill has two Ponies reliving my childhood. Some of the Jill books are expensive I wish I'd kept mine.

Can't for the life of me remember what Jill's pony was called ?

One line I always remember is Jill getting dressed up in "mummys cream shantung coat" all rather posh looking back now. Cant remember which book though

Jorah · 26/06/2018 16:48

I want to write one. I wonder if there's any market for them these days

rosettesforjill · 26/06/2018 18:23

@slinkysaluki she had Black Boy and Rapide Smile

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 26/06/2018 18:44

I was pony mad as a child and had all these books until my mum lent them to a friends daughter and I never saw them again 😢 I have never forgiven her

MipMipMip · 26/06/2018 20:08

Does anyone remember when Jill and Ann had a table top sale to buy hay (which it turned out they already had but the farmer had nicked it!) ? I seem to remember they used a paisley shawl as a table cloth and Ann sold it by accident. Jill's mum was NOT happy.Grin

kinseymilhone · 26/06/2018 20:11

Thanks to this thread I have just ordered 5 Jill books from Amazon for a few pounds each! I'm so excited!!!

MipMipMip · 26/06/2018 20:53

Which was the last book? I've never read it and after this thread I'm not sure j want to!

MrsGrindah · 26/06/2018 20:56
