Do it do it now, loads do, enjoy

soundedbetterinmyhead · 05/10/2013 20:07

Yup, me too. DS has been learning since July and I've just started back too. I'm 38 as well - never too old to get back in the saddle, even though I'm still walking funny from last week! Good Luck! (This time round, I am a lot less blase about popping to the shops in my jodphurs though - much to the relief of my children.)

Lovesswimming · 05/10/2013 20:11

I started back at about 37 after nearly 20 years out. Just go for it x

Pixel · 05/10/2013 20:25

I'm 46 and I pop into shops in my jods. Don't see the difference now so many people are wearing leggings or skinny jeans anyway.

hatcam · 05/10/2013 20:28

Started again at the ripe old age of 38. Love it. It has made me very, very happy. Don't delay - crack on!!

Be careful though, I started out having a lesson or two, then a hack of two - fast forward a couple of years and I have a horse on loan from the riding school, straw in my hair and a car that smells like a horse's pissoir.

P.S Me and my lovely horse jumped this week. She has had months of work due to a horrific injury in the lorry that could've killed her. She rocked. Grin.

HSMMaCM · 05/10/2013 20:34

I got back into it when my lovely DH booked it as a birthday present. I went to an adults class and loved it. Wondering why I have up again (apart from the cost).

PerfectlyChaotic · 05/10/2013 21:18

As the others have said, do it now! I've recently started again after many years and I'm LOVING it...and rather selfishly wondering what we can sacrifice so that I can have my own again :/

frenchfancy · 06/10/2013 09:56

I started 4 years ago at 38 as a total novice. We now own 2 horses and the whole family is involved - DH started riding again last month at the age of 46.

Zazzles007 · 06/10/2013 12:02

Another one who got back into the saddle at ages....., oh 32, 35 and 38yrs. There are plenty of adult riders who are either learning for the first time, or are coming back to it as adult re-riders. You might find yourself in an adult riders group with others who are also coming back to it after their education, children etc.

Do it, you won't regret it Grin.

NotGoodNotBad · 06/10/2013 12:21

Yes, me. I got back into riding in my early 40's, after years of just going once every few years. Bought one 3 years ago, having given up on the idea in my 20's. It's fantastic Smile unless he kills me.

lovebeansontoast · 06/10/2013 18:55

Me too. I rode as a child, and at uni then nothing until age about 38 when dd's had riding lessons. I got the bug, bought my first horse age 40 and haven't looked back since. :)

soundedbetterinmyhead · 06/10/2013 18:59

God, it hurts though this time round. I've just had lesson number 2 and had a little cry when trotting without stirrups as in that much pain with my inner thigh muscles. Will not be able to move tomorrow. Blush

emlu67 · 06/10/2013 20:17

Go for it! I had an almost 30 year break, am quite a few years older than you but started back recently and am loving it! You only live once...

Kizzit · 06/10/2013 22:51

Absolutely go for it! I found myself on one of those Saturday afternoons,
on my own at home.Dc off to friends or doing sports,DH also off doing his sport.Made my mind up there and then.I have ridden since I was a child, owned my own horse and then the whole thing came to a grinding halt when DC where born.Tried various other, less money and time consuming sports but my heart was never in it.
Put out a few feelers and after a couple of mismatches have now found my ideal share-horse. Been riding him 2/3 times a week and can go and see him whenever I want.Only 10 minute drive from home.Been going since February and never looked back. Absolutely LOVE it.
My face is like Grin Grin most days now.

roseyposeysmum · 10/10/2013 14:24

I am having my first lesson tonight after a long time not riding, my dd loans a pony and i have been helping her out, now help at the weekends and have got sucked back into it. Can't wait but not looking forward to my body getting used to riding again ouch ouch ouch (and that is before i even get on the horse)

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2013 14:28

We had some lessons a couple of years ago when DD wanted some - we had group lessons just the three of us so it wasn't embarrassing. DD and I were total novices; DH had ridden a bit as a boy/teen - so ~35 year gap - he was straight back into rising trot no problem.

I'm sure you'll love it if it was a passion before. Smile

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 10/10/2013 14:32

I'm 62 & I've ridden 3 times in the last year - most recently on Sunday, I could hardly move on Mon & Tue Grin Before that it was about 20 years ago.

I think I am actually really too old to re-start but it is fun even though my legs are too feeble to have much effect (just unfit in general). Plus, when I learned it was heels-down & feet forward. I can see the new way is better but I keep defaulting

gallopinggranny · 11/10/2013 18:00

At 62, TheOneWithTheNicestSmile, you are not too old to re-start!! As the grandkids say "YOLO" - you only live once. I began again at 61, not having ridden since my 40s. My job was too demanding. When I retired I too thought I was too old, but one day I thought "why not?". Now I am 65 and have had a small horse of my own for 3 and a half years and still have a gallop sometimes (hence the name). Also, think about the elderly people you see riding at hunts - galloping and jumping terrifying fences. Many of them are much older than us!! So we can't be too old to enjoy quiet hacks or whatever we please. So, to you and to Imsosorryalan, I say - go for it!

Littlebigbum · 11/10/2013 18:57

think there are some famous show jumpers older than that

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 11/10/2013 20:27

I'm sure there are! But they'll have ridden a little more frequently than me Grin (& will be much more riding-fit too)

As well as being old (& out of date with technique) I am very tall, somewhat overweight, & not at all supple.

I'm not trying to talk myself out of it though!

trashcanjunkie · 11/10/2013 22:09

i'm tall and a bit fatter than I'd like too!! (just at the momentGrin) but I've just got my first part loan at the tender age of 35 and having not regularly ridden since my teens. Every single bit of me is currently aching but it's so bloody worth it!

Romily · 14/10/2013 18:13

If I had the money I would be back riding in a flash and I am 35 Smile

Imsosorryalan · 14/10/2013 22:52

Thanks all, I think I'm going to go for itGrin or at least book a lesson at the same time as my dd so I don't feel too silly. Moral support and all that. so, is it not 'heels down, feet forward anymore?Blush

I'm 52 and ride a fruitloop 17hh Dutch Warmblood. I've also trained as a whitewater raft guide and paddle white water kayak and canoe. I can roll a kayak woo hoo! My motto is 'You're never too old to be immature' Grin

Oh and nearly forgot... I'm in the gold-medal-winning GB senior mixed dragon boat racing team Smile
