Who the fuck dumps there horse in MY field

So ive gone down to let my horses in tonight, and there is an extra fucking horse in my field. I know its not mine. I know it wasnt there at 7:30 this morning. I know its been put in because the lock is cut off. CUT off. Theve cut my padlock off to put an additional horse IN!! IN!!

It went crazy when I took mine in to the stables, so I had no choice. Hes now in a stable with a haynet.

Ive rang round locally and noone appears willing to claim him. Ive rang the police, and theve advised me to put un an abandonement notice telling whoever owns him they have 14 days to shift him, before he becomes mine, and apparently hes my legal responsibility in the meantime because hes on my land.

WTF do I do now?

We had this problem with local travellers.They'd let their horses into someone's field,then,when contacted be 'unable to come over and move them for a few days'.They were coloured cobs though,not TB's.

I agree with the posters who think he's been pinched and become too hot to handle,so dumped.Poor boy,hope he is reunited with his owner soon.

Unbelieveable, poor chap, must be really confused and it sounds like he is tired, wonder if he has travelled a long way? Lucky he got your field, although not so lucky for you.

We have had cats, rabbits and ferrets dumped on us, but no horses - yet! Oh the next farm saw two Cockerels chucked out of a landy recently, they kept one and the Postman had the other. People think it is quiet in the country!

This must be stressful but lucky for him he landed with you.
Dead jealous. Think I may have to put a sign up requesting horses be dumped at mine!

Just thinking - If they did turn up when you were there, aren't you entitled to ask them to pay for the cost of keeping him in the meantime?

It's probably a long shot in getting money out of anyone and they are most likely to just take him out the field again, but I know with dogs when you keep the dog for the alloted time, if an owner turns up, you can ask for payment of any costs incurred - having said that its something like 30 days for a dog and there has been case law when a dog has been kept by finder and owners have still won them back after several months.

Before you get the vet out to check of he is chipped, do you know any livestock owners/farmers? They may well have a microchip reader and would be willing to lend it to you for an hour or so, or come swipe him if passing. The vet is going to cost! if you know the vet and they are local, you might be able to sneak a borrow from them!
My friend had a vet out to passport her pony, he charged her £12 just for swiping the chip reader over its neck! It took 10 seconds!

Also, make sure if the owner comes back for him, they don't leave with yours as well!

Well, to be fair, it took him getting in his car, getting over there, having the equipment in the first place, scanning, getting back in his car and getting back to his workplace. So in terms of his time, it was a lot more than 10 seconds and in terms of expense - time, fuel, equipment. So I suppose £12 is not as bad as it seems if you think well, that was only 10 seconds. iyswim.

My uncle once woke to find 3 extra hens in his coup. Not quite as costly as an extra horse!

£12 is very cheap for a vet call out.

Would be - for me - a good way of getting a horse. DH couldn't bear to say no.

Right update:

The Horse must think of a better name for him is still here. I left him in the stable whilst I took the kids out on their ponies, and ive just turned them all out. He was an absolute star. Walked nicely down to the field, stood nicely at the gate and then legged it the second I unclipped the headcollar! He wasnt bothered by the noise of the kids screaming, the dogs, or the tractor we encountered. Hes obviously been well socialised at some point.

Ive rang the vet and it would be £54 to come out and scan him today, but he is passing on Tuesday on the way to the hunt yard so says if I wait until them he wont charge me. So may have to wait until Tues for microschip news!

Ive rang the local feed merchants and asked them to put a note up on their board to see if hes missing, and done the same with a couple of saddlers locally. Ive also messaged the local farriers and asked them to ask as they go around. Im going to join H & H and get him on the lost / found forum.

Im not going to put the abandonment notice up until after Ive seen if hes got a chip, and then ill take it from there.

Now the only decision is do I try and tack him up

MagicLlama - as I remember you from your various other threads, have you checked with your Dad/Mum/brother that they haven't just told someone they could leave the horse with you and you'd look after it while they were on holiday or something? It sounds like the sort of fucked up thing they would do...

I won't tell my DH the plan if you like but I know a field he'd be welcome in!
