I do not have the money. Or the time. So someone tell me to get off dragondriving. Some people really need to learn to feed a damned pony!

Sorry, I can't help! We were looking for a youngster, and DD was the place we got her from. I decided that we could give one of these poor beasts a good home. The one we bought was a good weight, but crawling with lice, and nobody had been able to get near her because she was so uncomfortable. Even I didn't work out the problem until we had had her for a month and finally been able to catch her! I don't honk that many of these ponies actually need lots of money spent on them. A lot of them are only babies. They just need a nice home and a full feed bowl!

I know the man who is selling these.. I've seen some of his older mares and they are stunning animals and behave amazingly.

Poor little boy. hope he finds a good home :(
I didnt realise how many skinny horses there was on DD, I advertised one of mine on there this afternoon... Now wondering if that was a good idea as looks like there are some people on there trying to sell a few off on buyers who will feel sorry for them and take them out of pitty.

Other half would probably let me have the colt! He says they're boring if they've not got a set of balls (Strange man). But i have no where to keep one. Absolutely NOWHERE will accept one on their land near me, Not even on the condition it's gelded ASAP. I wanted one and i even rang around asking if i booked it in and got the vet to confirm the booking but still a big fat NO!

Alameda - Buy a filly and send her my way! haha!

He does know the only thing keeping me from going ahead and sneaking one in is the fact that i would have to get him to drive. I thought about asking my ex to do it (We are friendly), But concluded that it would look odd if i secretly went to durham with an ex.

What about if you took the colt via the vet on the way home? So it's gelded when it gets there?

I asked that and they said they would let them on if I did that, but they wouldn't reserve a stable until its nuts are off. So basically I'd be risking turning up and there being no stable. A lot of the farms near me are very cheap rents so they're always pretty full

When the car is fixed I'm going to have a drive around and see if I can find a bit of land to rent on my own I think.

It would be hard for me to vet homes as I have no transport at all atm :(

TheQueenOfDiamonds you could always ask the the person selling the pony to have the vet go there to cut him before you collect him. I know a lot of sellers will offer that if they are selling colts.

Sorry to say I'm going to give you that reality slap!

If you want to buy a coloured pony do it for the right reasons. Make sure it is the right size, sex, conformation and temperament for what you want to do with it in the long term. Also buy the best one you can afford.

It costs as much to keep a cheap one as an expensive one.

Not trying to be mean to these poor little types but these owners/breeders are selling them so cheap I can't understand what they are doing it for.

If people buy these ponies it just encourages them to keep breeding more.

They obviously don't think it is worth gelding, feeding them etc and probably not had the vet out. Even passporting them is probably more than some of these are sold for. I know it is tough but you have to be sure that your time, money and emotional attachment is spent on something you'll get pleasure out of.

Butkin - I've had horses for 8 years, I know how much they cost to keep - That's what the 'I haven't got the money' bit referred to!

The mare i like would be ideal next year. Sadly, Not right now.

Butkin, It's my opinion, rightly or wrongly, that nothing we can do will stop the gypsies breeding ponies. If I can give a poor wretch a turn for the better, that's about all I can do to help. Not everybody wants or needs a show quality pony, and just because it's not show quality doesn't make a pony worthless. Every pony has a potential use, regardless I whether it's knock kneed or pig ugly.
We have a whole yard full of rejects, not suitable or pretty enough. They are all amazing. And give pleasure to many people. There's just as much satisfaction to be had from making the best of a bad lot, as there is from buying quality and enjoying it.

Butkin · 23/05/2012 09:37

I take your point that nobody can stop them breeding but I've seen too many kind hearted people taken to the brink because they try to save every pony. There is an animal shelter near us that actually looks like the sort of place they are trying to save the horses from.

I fully commend you for all the efforts you make and know from your many postings that you do a great job.

However I also think in general people (not necessarily the OP of course although she admits she has neither the time or the money) do need to consider the reality of the situation and not let their emotions get the better of them. If after due consideration people want and can afford to rescue these gypsy ponies then good on them!

Butkin - I do think that ponies priced low like those on DD, do encourage people to impulse buy. Whilst the mare I like would be a brilliant bargain for me (if now were a good time) and would be treated no differently from a horse that's not always the case.

I have a terrible habbit of eyeing up horses though, and need to be kept in line if I am to avoid torturing myself haha.
