TA / HLTAs unhappy with divisive attitude

Have been employed as a HLTA in a lovely school for about 2 years, having returned to work following a long career break. Previous career in corporate / professional background.
It has been a really rewarding experience, fantastic colleagues and wonderful children. Although it has been incredibly challenging, I have really enjoyed seeing their progress and feeling like I am making an actual difference. There are two other HLTAs in the school, both very experienced - and a number of class TAs and 1.1s. I ran intervention groups for KS2 and various classroom cover where required, PPA cover etc. Lunchtime / playtime cover was on a rota and everyone chipped in.
This term, we have a new Head - and she has arrived guns blazing, seemingly intent on implementing change. During her first staff meeting, she announced that all support staff would be required to cover a full hour lunch duty every day, as well as break duty. Teachers would no longer be expected to share this…ever.
She then went on to say that TAs were not entitled to full half hour lunchtime breaks, and would only be allowed a quick 5 minute break to use the toilet - during the day, and then 15/20 minutes to eat lunch after the lunchtime period is over. She stipulated we are not to leave the classroom for toilet breaks during class time, and this needs to be managed accordingly. Staff meetings would be 3.30 to 5.30 every Tuesday - and TA staff will be invited if relevant - otherwise they can help with teas for the teachers and prepare classroom resources for the duration!
I have never felt so talked down to in my life, with such an insultingly divisive address to staff. Are schools not supposed to be inclusive environments? Having worked in large male dominated corporate environments, this was the worst staff introduction I have ever experienced, and I feel like handing my notice in.

To too it off, the HLTAs have now been assigned to a classroom as opposed to working with different classes within the school, and the class teacher assumes I belong to ‘her’. She keeps making references such as ‘my TA’ and already I am in no doubt that she sees me as ‘her’ personal assistant, as opposed to someone who is there to assist the children. Feeling terribly unsettled, and aside from various contractual conflicts, surely it doesn’t make sense to utilise HLTAs in this way? The pay grade is somewhat higher than the standard class TA pay grade - but this new head clearly thinks we are all brainless minions who should be seen and not heard.
Would really like to hear what other schools do. Particularly in relation to lunchtime duties etc.
Thank you 😊

@YippieKayakOtherBuckets

  • For the last time, I have not intentionally had a ‘swipe’ at anyone and certainly not one that could be termed as ‘nasty’. That is just wrong and frankly quite insulting.

I made a comment about the practicality of earning QTS in terms of difficulty & time - relative to other qualifications. There is no qualification that should ever bestow an air of superiority or oneupmanship over anyone..in any workplace.

I very rarely use forums like this, and while most posters contribute to conversations in a kind & courteous way, it is scary how quickly the virtual bullies can pounce and turn it all around.
There is no point in trying to defend yourself from accusatory bullying like that - and it’s really put me off ever using a forum like this again.
Huge thank you to everyone else who has contributed, and I will ask for this thread to be removed 😔

Just before this is removed @HLTA99 , I get where you were coming from in your thread. You sound like you would be a wonderful HLTA. As a teacher of more than 20 years, I want to echo what a lot of other posters have put - I couldn't teach without the TAs/ HLTAs I have worked with over the years. Let's get rid of this us v. them mentality in education at all levels. The new Head will hopefully learn this lesson if so many people resign... Equally, I have sometimes noticed an attitude between senior/ wider leaders and 'just' classroom teachers. We need to get rid of all these petty squabbles and just focus on the job and working as a team...but meanwhile, back in the real world.

Let's also get rid of comparing qualifications and job status. Britain in general would be much better without this. I personally think teaching is very tough emotionally and mentally to do for a long time especially when you care about it and have invested in it but I do not doubt that many other jobs are equally taxing, albeit in different ways.

Anyway, best wishes for the future and vive l'education.

I’m a HLTA. I am a class TA in the mornings and cover PPa across the school every afternoon. I have a 15 min break am and an hour lunch break. I only take 45 mins at lunch as I need to set up for my afternoon covering PPA. I cover one morning break pw on a rota. If I was told I could only have a 20 min break I would be looking for anonymous job.

Benjispruce4 · 04/10/2022 21:07

Another not anonymous

My break (half hour lunch if I'm lucky) is unpaid. Do other TAs/HLTAs get paid for their lunch? Always seems well mean not to be paid!
I too wish you luck op and agree that petty power games amongst staff needs sorting out in many schools it seems...

My lunch is unpaid, morning break is paid.

OP, you have not come across at all well here. We all understand that you don’t like the way the new head is doing things, but unless you’re prepared to walk away, that’s irrelevant. They are the head and you are one of many TAs. You may well have worked in this high powered role and that top job, but YOU’RE NOT IN CHARGE! It seems to me that your previous experience has led to you thinking that your way is best and your knowledge of how things should be done is superior. Perhaps it is - who knows? But the new head has come in and taken steps to right wrongs that needed to be resolved, attempted to make changes and make their mark. Isn’t that exactly what you would have done in a new, senior role? There are ways to talk to people and it seems that the head may have lost points here. However, for all you know, they may be under orders to reduce the number of TAs, get rid of dead wood, trouble makers etc. You might not see yourself in those categories but others might. Either way - leave. Jobs like these are in such demand, there’s no point being unhappy.
