I can’t post all of my details as it would be too outing, but I will hand in my notice next week. I am a head of a small non-core department in a comprehensive secondary school. We are waiting for Ofsted, behaviour is atrocious, colleagues are shattered. I haven’t got another job, but I am done.

@PenOrPencil aw fab, congratulations! I have until May (end of mat leave) to make my announcement but I’ve decided I will just about clean toilets for a living before I will be returning. My life is sooo much better without school in it and actually even with it still hanging over me it still managing to take away a bit of joy from me 😒

@Dizzyhedgehog

Well, we are looking for a secondary Maths teacher, if anyone is be happy to move to Germany. :) We have a primary and EYFS section as well, where they take unsolicited applications very happily (especially EYFS). Hours are better, pay is better, much less pressure and paperwork and childcare is a fraction of what we used to pay in the UK.

I'd love more information if you're able to share? I taught in Germany for many years, but now back in the UK and hating every second! Would head back to DL in a millisecond 🥰

Can I be nosey - if you’ve handed in your notice, is it a leap of faith and the hope a job will come up. The notice periods are so long I’m concerned that I couldn’t apply for a role outside of education as the time scale would be seriously out of sync and therefore feel trapped.

sarah13xx · 16/11/2021 22:31

@wierdowithnoname if you have Facebook definitely join the Facebook group ‘exit the classroom and thrive’ - sooo much info on there and so many brave people!

Thank you - need to do something, 60 hour weeks are killing me.

Im an RQT planning to hand my notice in despite good feedback from school. I feel it may be a shock because I try to put on a brave face every day but I struggle so much with the behavior it really grinds me down. Pupils don’t see my subject as important and I’m sick of every lesson being a battle. I also work some evenings every week and usually a half day at weekend despite leaving late every day. This week I’ve had two drop ins from learning walks, deadlines for resources for a unit not starting until after Christmas, two big data deadlines i had to work late into the evenings for because my assessments were pushed back due to being ill and no extensions were granted. I’ve also had a free taken for cover, parents eve coming up, planning, homework to set and mark, behavior so bad in year 7 I’ve had to call for help to remove pupils because they started banging on the walls if my classroom from outside etc I just don’t enjoy it and I’ve worked so hard to get here. I want to leave but the notice period is so long. How do people get new jobs outside of education with such a long notice period?

wierdowithnoname · 27/11/2021 22:01

@cafesandbookshops sorry to heat that - sounds a shit workload and bad behaviour to top it off is awful. I do 50-60 hour weeks on a regular basis but fortunately most of my students behave. Are you getting any support from managers/SLT?

cafesandbookshops · 27/11/2021 22:12

Thanks for your reply. Yes and no. They respond quickly but rely mostly on restorative conversations which don’t work for the worst behavior. I also feel like I shouldn’t have to put up with it in the first place and am just gobsmacked at how casually rude some pupils are to the teachers. I thought I’d develop a thick skin but it’s the opposite I’m finding it’s grinding me down and I’m getting less patient with it. Some classes I just spend the week dreading and when I see experienced teachers being told to F off i just don’t know if I want to be in this kind of work environment long term. I know it isn’t personal but it’s so draining. I know i would have to deal with bad behavior from adults in health care but maybe It would be easier from one person rather than 30 and you have the option to remove yourself from the situation which currently I don’t have.
