I can’t post all of my details as it would be too outing, but I will hand in my notice next week. I am a head of a small non-core department in a comprehensive secondary school. We are waiting for Ofsted, behaviour is atrocious, colleagues are shattered. I haven’t got another job, but I am done.

I am. I teach primary and also have no job lined up. But my sanity needs me to leave

PenOrPencil · 16/10/2021 20:01

It’s unbearable, isn’t it @hels71? I know that everybody pretty much feels the same, but I don’t know how to go on.

I really want to but as a single mum with a mortgage to pay, I'm struggling to find an alternative that pays the same as I'm on ups

chocolateisavegetable · 16/10/2021 22:07

I will be resigning at the end of term

Meandmini3 · 16/10/2021 23:16

Primary SLT and I’m planning to resign to leave at the end of this school year. My school is great and I’m considered a successful teacher and school leader but I am done with the workload. I’m finished with neglecting the needs of my own three children at the weekends and on evenings never mind paying for childcare for some of the school holidays so I can get work done.

Dizzyhedgehog · 17/10/2021 06:30

Well, we are looking for a secondary Maths teacher, if anyone is be happy to move to Germany. :)
We have a primary and EYFS section as well, where they take unsolicited applications very happily (especially EYFS). Hours are better, pay is better, much less pressure and paperwork and childcare is a fraction of what we used to pay in the UK.

LolaSmiles · 17/10/2021 09:25

I've contemplated it several times in the last year. I enjoy teaching, but after some difficult personal circumstance and having to use childcare in the holidays to get on top of things, I'm considering my options for the end of this year.

sarah13xx · 19/10/2021 20:05

Yip, in this bandwagon too!

niclw · 19/10/2021 22:53

I'd love to resign. I've had enough but like @CheesecakeAddict I'm a single parent on UPS3 plus a TLR with a mortgage and childcare to pay. It simply isn't an option for me. However when I win the lottery, I will definitely resign.

billovitch · 20/10/2021 20:17

I dropped out of school teaching a few years ago. I completed a PGCE (science with physics specialism) at the age of 50, then lasted five years before being ground down by students not accepting my authority. I switched from one school to another, including a couple of grammar schools, but encountered contempt from students. I now give private tuition, and get consistent high praise from my students and their parents, along the lines of "you explain things much better than the teachers at school".

Any ideas as to why I might have been so badly received in the classroom?

LolaSmiles · 20/10/2021 20:27

billovitch
Sometimes it only takes a few students in a class to create a pack mentality where whatever the teacher does, however good, is ignored, disrespected and ridiculed.
There's also much more ability to personalise learning when tutoring that is difficult to do in a class, especially if you have a minority of students who want to disrupt others.
The other thing is that if parents are paying for tutoring then they'll have explained to their child that they are spending money on this so not to waste the time.

CaptainChannel · 20/10/2021 21:16

I wish, but I can't afford it atm. I work at a difficult school with some appalling behaviour and social problems. Only saving grace is we just had ofsted the last two days so at least that's done.
Staff are really hard working and SLT are actually very nice on the whole but the job is draining.

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 21/10/2021 17:03

I resigned from my Primary job in the summer, along with two other staff who were also bullied out. Luckily I have a rainy day fund to draw on until I can take my pension early next Summer. The bullying dick head has now installed a couple of his cronies to take our places. I will never set foot in a classroom again.

sarah13xx · 21/10/2021 17:08

@MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers congrats, sounds like a lucky escape

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 21/10/2021 17:17

Thanks @sarah13xx It was a sad way to end my 32 year career but I'm well out of it, especially as they're due Ofsted any time now.

sarah13xx · 21/10/2021 20:52

@MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers yeah run for the hills! You’ve done well to make it that long. I’m only in my 6th year and wanting out

Benjispruce4 · 21/10/2021 21:26

I’m a HLTA in primary and know of two teacher colleagues planning to resign next week. They are fabulous teachers and their loss will have a huge impact as one is SENCO. But seriously, when she’s claiming high needs funding at midnight, I really don’t blame her.

InspectorAlleyn · 21/10/2021 22:23

I am leaving my current school at the end of this term. Not leaving teaching altogether, but moving from state to an indie.

UrbanMage · 22/10/2021 11:32

I want to add myself to this list. I’m currently weighing up options. It isn’t the fault of my kids (although some are grotty AF at the moment) and SLT is being hammered by our ‘Trust’. Also due OFSTED and that is crushing morale. About 50% of staff are considering leaving.

I don’t want to fight the teaching battle any more.

inthewest · 22/10/2021 15:45

I feel you! I'm at a primary school and am feeling the same way. I had a parent get nasty with me over literally nothing yesterday morning and it was the straw that broke the camels back. Found the closest member of staff and raced to the loo for a good old cry. Things in my school aren't good right now and nothing changes (despite promise after promise).

I need to stay here for a few months as I'm sponsored and in the process of ILR. The second I get that I'm out. I'm getting married in a few months and we've seriously considered moving the ceremony up so I can move onto a spousal visa and regain some of my sanity.

Do we work at the same school? I almost welcome the Ofsted visit because I KNOW it's not going to go well and would prefer it sooner than later as it will absolutely bring about major changes!
UrbanMage · 22/10/2021 16:12

@inthewest I’m in secondary. Our OFSTED will be a shambles but SLT think it’ll be amazing, if we keep going on about progress 8 and saying we expect XYZ from year 11, which honestly, is never ever going to happen.

PenOrPencil · 23/10/2021 17:04

I have done it! Shocked faces all around, but I am feeling a huge sense of relief. I will not do classroom teaching again, student behaviour is ridiculous. Last day of term yesterday and students were letting bangers off left, right and centre. Ofsted will rip the place apart.

Well done @PenOrPencil, hope you have a lovely half term. Have you decided what you will do next?

PenOrPencil · 24/10/2021 13:35

I think I need to take a break and catch my breath before I make any decisions. I don’t know yet how I will make it to Christmas!
