Do you think location is important for NQT roles

I'm having a debate within myself and thinking I need to hurry up and sort a job out ASAP because if I don't I'm stuck for next September as I'd like a change.

I'm one of those people that has to see something first before I make the move or choice to apply. Ive seen a school but it's 1 hour away in morning traffic or more if it's a busy day.

I worry I'll hit burnout though as I need to stay for 2 years for my nqt year.

What do you all suggest. I feel the commute is too much for me personally and I'll hit low mood or anxiety I just haven't found the right thing yet. Do you suggest I visit more places before making choices also?

I think a one hour commute would be too much on top of a busy nqt role & anxiety. Would moving closer to a job be possible? So widen the search then move home?

Not up to the move just yet due to that being a huge decision and I'm not that keen on the area

What's the job market like around you? I think you need to change your mindset. You won't be choosing your school, your school will be deigning to choose you. You also won't really know a school until you've been there for a while.

I totally get that. But a one hour travel a day would take it outta me. It's one hour average and aloe more when I travelled back and it felt tough and I was exhausted when I got home

Is it one hour each way or one hour total? One hour total is nothing.

CarrieBlue · 14/05/2021 20:31

What do you mean by you’d like a change?

Has the school you’ve seen actually advertised a job?

Bernadina · 14/05/2021 21:06

Surely there are other schools within a decent 15-30 mins? Are you very rural? Confused

Yeah I'm extremely rural. Live in an area with 0 signal on any network 🙃 thank f for wifi hey

If you're worried about the commute, it's not worth it.
You don't have to stay for two years though.

Oh really. My mentor said I would need to

No. ECF covers two years but you will be able to move schools between.

CarrieBlue · 14/05/2021 22:40

So its a vacancy you’re drawn to but in an area you don’t like and an hour’s drive away? We’re not at the desperate end of the job window yet. I’m still not sure what you mean about liking a change. A change from what?

Change from where I'm at?

But you don’t have a job there do you? It’s your training placement isn’t it? You’ll be changing regardless. You don’t like it there, you’re not applying for a job there. You don’t really have a choice but to change but you don’t have to go an hour away for that (unless you are somewhere really rural). You might want to bear in mind you’d be travelling before the school rush hour since you’ll need to be there before the kids if that helps with travel time.

MrsHamlet · 14/05/2021 23:13

I travel 45 minutes by train. That works for me.

Yeah I can't do trains because again I live in a stupidly rural area. I'll be moving in 2 years

I can’t work you out at all op. On the one hand, you seem very sure about what you don’t want. In the other, you don’t seem very clear about what you do

So you like- teaching?

TheJackieWeaver · 14/05/2021 23:29

*do

Loshad · 15/05/2021 11:44

What is the change from? Surely you need a job if you are training now and a nqt next year?

All I meant was a change from the school I'm at not a change from teaching!!!!

But you have no choice but to change from this school (which you don’t like anyway). You give the impression you think you’ll still be there in September if you don’t find something else.

Trenzalor · 15/05/2021 13:45

As short a commute as possible! My new school is a five minute drive away. Life changing!
