You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Evening all. Well I got coughed on today. Not happy about that.

phlebasconsidered · 24/03/2021 20:10

Plus I am just leaving this here- I looked so terrible this morning that I actually put on more than my mascara as regards make up. I used my 5 year old BB cream and tried to do something with my daughters blusher. Breaking a 20 year long Ripley from Aliens vibe with fuck all and a grade 4.

I am 49 and I can't do make up.

Monkeytennis97 · 24/03/2021 20:10

@namechangedyetagain congratulations!!🎉🎈🎊🍾

SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo · 24/03/2021 20:11

I’ve namechanged but I promise I’m a regular! So ds1 has come down with covid symptoms. Headache and sore throat, then fever and chills and had no sense of smell. I’ve taken him to a drive through centre and we’re waiting for his results now.

I’m right in thinking I can’t go into work until I get his results, aren’t I? I know he can’t go into school, obviously.

phlebasconsidered · 24/03/2021 20:11

And Guy, ring the HOY. My own ds is neurotypical and year 7 was hard. The HOY was great.

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/03/2021 20:13

Congratulations name

honey it sounds like they’ve handled telling well - my school are shocking for that most of the time. It sounds like you have impressed them though and they know you’re looking for more and so maybe if you did stay other things will come up, or they will tailor something for you when planning what roles to advertise?

SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo · 24/03/2021 20:14

(Just preparing myself mentally as last time one of my kids was waiting for a test, I called school to let them know I couldn’t come in and they said it was ok for me to come in, which seems against the guidance Confused )

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/03/2021 20:16

@SomeKindOfFloppyWeirdo you’re right don’t go in. Perhaps have the guidance ready to send them if they try that.

@phlebasconsidered I don’t even own mascara to even get started on wearing anything....

@GuyFawkesDay hope you get something back but definitely ring also.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 24/03/2021 20:17

@TheHoneyBadger - typical behaviour by some heads. They already know who is lined up for the post but go through the motions, It is galling when your ideas are then used by someone else but are repackaged or spun in such a way that they get the kudos. Try not to get into a support situation as remember you are not being paid for that.

Well done @namechangedyetagain

Oh,Honey Angry and Sad. How disappointing. I'm not sure I'd be offering too much of my free time and help to the new appointee, if I'm honest!

Taught my last classroom class today, one remote lesson to record tomorrow and a bit of marking to do, then I'm done for Easter. I've been falling asleep after school every day since last Friday, so it's definitely time for a break.

GuyFawkes, your poor dc Sad. Does he have friends he can hang around with? My dd was frozen out of her friendship group in Y7 in a really obvious way, I think I cried about it as much as she did. Lots of positive reinforcement and conversations about coping strategies. She found an excellent group of friends in Y8 and in Y9 they are as thick as thieves. It was horrible at the time though.

What's the lunchtime supervision like in your dc school? I went straight to HoY and she was very good, individual chats with each child and reinforcing of school values. Ultimately it was up to my dd to find her own tribe, but she has emerged stronger, more determined (and more cynical) as a result.

WarriorN · 24/03/2021 20:18

Hello all,

Sorry not been here; we all succumbed to crappy coughs etc and I zoned on grays anatomy a lot plus any non teaching mn stuff as I do think I'm getting antsy for after Easter. I think it's all just about drained me. Hols soon 🔜

Also doing well in some Ed related career stuff that's actually out side school and had to focus on that a bit at times. Which was nice actually.

Back to old teaching regimes after Easter. Which is worrying as we've had 2 cases and a popped bubble. But some good things have happened around me saying No to silly ideas (and getting worked up about not being heard) ; all taken on board and changed Smile

Congratulations Name! 🥳

This made me chuckle and think of you all!

WarriorN · 24/03/2021 20:22

read more, sorry honey and mrs H.

Missing chatting to you all.

I fear after Easter will be a bit of a rebound. We are still not jabbed as a school, though some are now, and it doesn't look like the under 50s will start here either till half term.

thecatfromjapan · 24/03/2021 20:23

@phlebasconsidered

You know if you have an applicant like that and they get it, everyone in the department will leave within a year. Because they're such an asshat.
This has made me laugh. 😂
Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2021 20:26

I just bit the bullet and sent an email to HOD about use of directed time after school today. I didn't get time to do what I needed to do, despite SLT saying we should.

As we know I send rubbish unassertive emails and I may have said 'sorry' a few times and used exclamation marks ... but at least I did it.

Sorry various people have been poorly : I ahve lost track of who ahs had covid all clears and positives so I hope we aren't missing people unaccounted for. Yay for people who got jobs. Boo for those who didn't.

All our Bobs were out in force today. I found out a Bobina is related (v closely) to a certain notorious British racist man. ALL makes sense now.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2021 20:32

I'm sitting on my hands resisting the opportunity to be cheeky and break the rules re booking a vaccine before I'm offered it offically. The health board at Chester has put out a link for those who think they are eligible for a vaccine if they are group 1-9. We're over the border but putting an NHS number in just sticks you into the 'Wales cohort' group and it still offers appointments.

Lots of our staff have booked on, inc some that are younger than 50 and don't have health issues, because it lets them. One or two have already been and they've got the jab after filling in the form, no questions asked.

I've got severe FOMO but I'm most definitely not a rule breaker so am torn. I really want to get the jab and my gp has confirmed that my asthma isn't severe enough to qualify for group 6 (despite taking a shed load of inhalers and tablets to control it) so I would feel guilty if I booked an appt and took it up. But the temptation is very real.

Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2021 20:33

Several of our year 13s have now had vaccines!

I teach one. She is the most lovely human being but there are no UHCs on her records.

eitak22 · 24/03/2021 20:36

Came to find fhe thread to see that we're already on 40 posts!

Congratulations to Name! We knew you could do it!

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job honey, agree with others don't offer to support without being paid!

Today has been one of those days, covered the class and it was so challenging so feel completely deflated as hoping to do my NQT year next year but can't even teach a simple lesson. Going to leave the application till I feel more confident!

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/03/2021 20:36

schoolsweek.co.uk/keep-records-of-parent-pressure-over-exam-grades-ofqual-tells-heads/

Sorry that was the article I meant to post, mainly about the possibility of having to report parents trying to pressure teachers to the exam boards, as malpractice. Shouldn't someone tell the parents?

phlebasconsidered · 24/03/2021 20:43

I put a bit of tap water in my mascara and sort of smooshed it and my dd was open mouthed in horror at me @MrsHerculePoirot

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/03/2021 20:45

I've got severe FOMO but I'm most definitely not a rule breaker so am torn.

Go and do it. The gov don't care about you, but you do. You'll have a bit of immunity by the end of the Easter break.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/03/2021 20:49

Oh, congrats and commiserations re jobs.

I was a bad person today and hid when I knew the Head was looking for me to do some cover this afternoon. I REALLY needed the non contact time. I had been moving around a bit anyway doing assessments and being in EP meetings, so tricky to track down. But I worked out that if I hid until after lunch break, I'd get away with it.

chocolateisavegetable · 24/03/2021 20:52

Thanks Staff

name absolutely fantastic news! Am so happy for you Smile

Guy so sorry - it's just an awful situation. Hope HT responds and deals with it appropriately. Btw - I totally loved that song - it's my new motto

@DrMadelineMaxwell I'll be honest - I think I might do it in your situation. Think of it as helping to protect others in your school, rather than just doing it to protect yourself. You'd be helping to protect the children's education after they've missed so much - as well as helping to stop the spread of Covid.

Honey that sucks Flowers for you

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 24/03/2021 21:01

@DrMadelineMaxwell I'd take it. I was offered one by the docs yesterday as they knew I was a teacher. They were actively thinking smuggling in anyone they knew was a teacher as they couldn't believe we hadn't been done. I feel slightly guilty but every person done is a good thing.

Appuskidu · 24/03/2021 21:14

@namechangedyetagain

Gosh teaching interview days are long. Luckily I made it to the afternoon stage🙂My brain is completely frazzled now but

I got a job🎉🎉🎉(subject to references, dbs, oh and passing the course!)

Am ridiculously happy. Thank you all for everything😃

Huge congrats-that’s fab!

Boo to your interview, @TheHoneyBadger-can’t believe they said they’d use your ideas!!

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/03/2021 21:14

@DrMadelineMaxwell I’d do it I think. You’ve got so much else going in right now it would perhaps be an easing slightly of one stress?

@phlebasconsidered that made me laugh. I kept getting an eye infection on the odd occasion I wore mascara about 10 years ago. Apparently this was because it was over 10 years old and not supposed to still be used 🤣🤣
