You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Sewell has a very old fashioned preoccupation with marriage , and mopeds. He is also homophobic .

He reminds me quite a lot of Wilshaw. I do however have no evidence that Wishaw hates gay people.

ChloeDecker · 31/03/2021 14:01

Mopeds?! I daren’t ask.
Sewell has some very dodgy views. Concerning.
Thanks for the link Piggy. Was a good read of the actual report.

ChloeDecker · 31/03/2021 14:04

Apologies for being very rubbish at properly catching up with everything on the thread, was this what you were referring to noblegiraffe?

The more I read, the more I clench. Definitely someone needs to start legal action, even if just civil, against U4T and the harm they have caused. Angry

What on earth has moving results days got to do with longer school days and / or improving attainment, or am I missing something here?

noblegiraffe · 31/03/2021 14:35

If the kids can apply for uni after they get their results, it makes it more likely that disadvantaged/black kids who overperform compared to teacher predictions will get into top unis.

It is a ridiculous system at the moment.

Shanghai, Honey? Would that be teaching remotely from UK? One of my former colleagues does that now, it works well for her.

On a side note, I spent 6 months working in Shanghai in 2001. Loved it!

noblegiraffe · 31/03/2021 14:43

Chloe that was their first legal threat to the government last year about re-opening.

They've just issued another one about masks in schools.

They are actually the worst. Couldn't win the argument in the court of public opinion so are just resorting to throwing their weight around.

ChloeDecker · 31/03/2021 14:49

Just musing but this would be something I would support the unions in launching counter legal actions relating to the abuses of the health and safety of their members.

Race report going well - complaints that it glorifies the slave trade www.politicshome.com/news/article/shadow-equality-minister-demands-urgent-explanation-after-accusing-race-report-of-glorifying-slave-trade

noblegiraffe · 31/03/2021 14:56

I want to see all of Boris's cronies, overly-influential lobbying groups, overpaid PPE supplying mates etc up in front of a public enquiry.

Yes and at a proper rate of pay allegedly whereas remote teaching usually pays terribly, especially China. I've lost the job details but I think it was 6 hrs a week at £30-50 an hour depending on experience. I think it was one midweek lesson and one at the weekend so I'm presuming the 6 hours is to cover planning etc? Don't know a great deal at the moment.

Protests at Pimlico Academy over racist headteacher www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9422507/Students-Pimlico-Academy-London-stage-protest-racist-uniform-policy.html

Interesting not least because the photos show what it's actually like in schools.

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2021 15:16

What the committee fails to even consider is that when ethnic minority young people get to uni, they disproportionately receive thirds, drop out or go into low paid jobs. White working class boys are still destined to out earn them as adults.

The stuff on the curriculum, on a quick read, appears alarming.

It feels like the government got this report to say what they wanted us all to hear. Lammy did a great report a few years back with cross party support and its findings have been ignored .

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2021 15:18

That hairstyle story was in a thread on MN a while back, I thought? Got heated very quickly

noblegiraffe · 31/03/2021 15:23

Yes, the story says that the racist hairstyle policy was introduced last August, but if the NEU are conducting a vote of no confidence in the head and teachers are threatening strike action, there's clearly more to it than just uniform policy.

borntobequiet · 31/03/2021 15:30

Apparently we have carried out thousands of tests and not had one positive.
I'm really not convinced by that.

TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 15:32

The kids demanding to wear as much make up as they like etc sound a bit daft and I'm not sure saying hijabs should be in uniform colours is unreasonable but the 'hairstyles that block other people's view' is very clearly targeted and discriminatory. How ill advised!

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2021 15:37

I vividly recall in the thread about this which was before this academic year, a poster saying a teacher should just sit all the black kids at the back...

TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 15:38

And in pimlico ffs! How do you recruit someone that ignorant to run such a diverse school?

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2021 15:41

That headteacher typically looks about 15.

There are clearly big issues at Pimlico. I doubt it is confined, though.

Obviously, unconscious bias training is not needed, oh no.

Beachhuts90 · 31/03/2021 15:48

@ChloeDecker

It’s all so different Beachhuts90! That cost too Shock
If I hadn't had a full scholarship I certainly couldn't have gone! I know people with six figures of student debt, and not everyone qualifies for income based repayment like is automatic here.
TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 17:26

Just balled my eyes out at the last Unforgotten. I'm on a fairly solid dose of the new antidepressants and quite relieved to find I can still cry and sob at sad stuff. Sometimes they can be quite emotionally blunting but apparently I'm still a big cry baby on these ones.

Piggywaspushed · 31/03/2021 18:27

It was v sad honey

Just read the whole report. It is so political. The education bit is one big manifesto to turn us all into knowledge curriculum, MAT based bots (or free schools). Vague mentions of teacher contracts but the models quoted are at school where teachers are simply expected to work longer hours. Not one of their case studies comes from a successful LA school , or a standalone academy. : but they do exist - loads of them in Cambridgeshire, for example.

JanFebAnyMonth · 31/03/2021 18:34

I’ve just been looking for it piggy, could you link? What do they mean by family structure - is it “Have less children?”

TheHoneyBadger · 31/03/2021 18:50

I presume it's not encouraging terrible folks like us Jan ie. single parents.

Yes please to a link.
