Becoming a teacher

Hello hoping to get the experience and wisdom of current teachers

I have done a degree in health and social care, I hopefully intend to end up teaching R.E/ philosophy & ethics age year 7 upwards.

Do I do a teaching qualification focusing on health and social care then in my free time pursue further education in religious studies or take a university recognised qualification in religious studies and then follow my dream of teaching.

So as not to drip feed I already have a 2:1 BA degree in health and social care and did philosophy and ethics at a level.

I was advised to pick the most open path possible but now it seems to have limited me.

N.b I graduated over five years ago but have never had a job within the industry I have been managing pubs / restaurants for the last five years

TIA

Would you not be better training to teach sociology and, indeed , H and SC?

Panicatthegarden · 23/02/2021 23:38

To be honest yes that could quite possibly be the best option, I'm just a bit overwhelmed by the choices and different pathways and I feel like I don't have the time or the money to pick the wrong one.

Oh absolutely. To put it into some perspective for you , sociology is one of the biggest growing subjects at A Level and Health and Social Care is quite widely offered. If I were to start again, I might look at something that is largely teaching sixth form and girls !

I teach sociology and love it.

Th RS teachers I know often end up teaching some other stuff such as PHE, and humanities so you do need other strings to your bow. Depending on the school, RS can be fantastic, or undervalued.

Thank you that's very helpful and reassuring to know. I will look into Health and Social Care in more depth.

I teach HSC and Child Development so I'm happy to answer any questions.

Go with HSC.
