You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation, I saw you retreated on Twitter this morning!

Cat this is weird, when I saw your post on threads I'm on, that was a :) but when I'm in the thread it's a :| so I'm not entirely sure what you're responding to or how?!

noblegiraffe · 06/02/2021 13:54

Sorry Herc, I meant to ask you for your Desmos lesson link please!

Also, I saw MrBartonMaths link to this maths Desmos lesson yesterday with a confidence slider which looks cool, but I have no idea how it has been made. Anyone know how I can get one?

Ooh, when I saw it, there was no emoji, and then it popped up as I was reading the post!

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2021 14:13

@noblegiraffe it’s just one of the starter screen options or check understanding screen options from their built in collections. You can customise them to say anything you like on the scale.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 06/02/2021 14:14

Is it just me or are the teacher bashers out in force again? Did they take a slight break or have I just been oblivious? Thank you for the Seasalt tip-off, I need some retail therapy to help me out.

Longer days are a stupid idea if children are being asked to do academic work. I’m in an independent school and we do them. It only works because they do non-academic lessons like music and drama and lots and lots of sport later on in the day. They are still exhausted.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 06/02/2021 14:18

Noble I'd just C&P the slide and use the component!

Haha Brie proper outing!

MrsHamlet · 06/02/2021 14:21

Those people baffle me with their ridiculousness

That's weird, noblegiraffe.

It was a smiley.

For a number of reasons/posts of yours.

I realised they all made me smile.

But the revenant-shape shifting nature of the emoji is a bit strange.

Piggywaspushed · 06/02/2021 14:37

I think also that most people (glares at DH) who bang on about longer days in private schools fail to notice the lunch hour that is nearly three times longer.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 06/02/2021 14:51

50% of at Seasalt for keyworkers

I took full advantage of that a couple of weeks ago. Got told about it, had spent £200 on stuff for me and my mum within about 10 minutes.

@noblegiraffe pm’d you the Desmos link for those checking understanding slide templates

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2021 14:59

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation shared links to everything we've made or found (grouped into collections). Made by various of my department so some better than others...

borntobequiet · 06/02/2021 15:13

the lunch hour that is nearly three times longer.

And so much more productive and healthy. We had a full hour for lunch when I started teaching, time enough for clubs and sports - and showers - and to eat (just, though I knew of many kids who skipped lunch because the canteen ran out of nice food early). We then had 10 min registration time, which provided a useful buffer between lunchtime and lessons, plus it wasn’t a problem if eg choir practice ran over. And it enabled one to catch up with any problems that had occurred before lunch, or missed communications from the morning.
It was then successively cut to 50 min, 45 min and by the time I left was 40 min (I bet it’s 30 now) and straight into lessons afterwards. It had an adverse effect on behaviour and learning in the afternoon that was obvious to anyone teaching then, but SLT wilfully ignored it. They had deemed a short lunch break to be more conducive to learning, so that was what it was. Idiots.

MrsDanvers123 · 06/02/2021 15:22

Afternoon! I've been reading another thread and comments about the 42% increase in trainees and how in 2008, there was also an increase in trainees. I was wondering if anybody knows how the 2008 increase affected future teacher numbers and retention figures. I am assuming that our current situation may be skewed by the fact that as this is not a financial crisis in general, that teachers leaving the profession at the moment may be higher than in 2008 - if that makes sense!

Monkeytennis97 · 06/02/2021 15:51

@borntobequiet yup we had 1 hour 15 minutes for lunch when I started. Now, 45 minutes is a luxury.

Kills extra curricular stuff.

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 06/02/2021 15:57

My school has 20 minute lunch breaks...m

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2021 16:00

@MrsDanvers123 think the data you want is in the tables (second link) and is table 8 in that file.

www.gov.uk/government/statistics/school-workforce-in-england-november-2017#history

From what I read "22% of newly qualified entrants to the sector in 2015 were not recorded as working in the state sector two years later. The five year out-of-service-rate for 2012 entrants was 33%, the ten year rate for 2008 entrants was 40%. The five-year wastage rate is the highest on the current series, which dates back to 1997. The rate has been between 26% and 33% in each year over this period. The ten-year rate has been between 36% and 40% in each year since 1997"

Thank you! Not sure how to interpret that for 2021, but suspect that it doesn't look great for future retention. I must admit, as an older UPS teacher, I am slightly concerned there will be lots of cheaper teachers available to replace me as schools struggle for cash and I become a way of making a major saving. I'd better work on continuing to make my face fit...

MrsHamlet · 06/02/2021 16:33

We had 5 maths NQTs in 2 years. None of them are still teaching. Our science nqt won't stay after this year. None of our mfl trainees in the past 5 years have taken up teaching posts.

MrsDanvers123 · 06/02/2021 16:40

But it's all about recruitment and there is very little about retention. It always seems that within departments, experience is appreciated (unless the HoD is 'inexperienced') but once you start looking from outside the department, the perspective is somewhat different!

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2021 16:42

I think I am an outlier as work in a department with an amazing HoD and such a nice department in general - no-one can bring themselves to leave! When I first started there 6/7 years ago lots of change, various people 'encouraged' out - only gave one year contracts to anyone we were unsure about etc. The the year before last we only lost two teachers who were moving to far flung places and last year no-one left! Of the 12 of us only 8 didn't train AND start first teaching job in our dept in last 5 years and the others of us have taught for over 15 years each. I suspect as they get older and move towards marriage and children some might move out of London just due to property/living costs/getting more space for you money - but then again who knows!
