You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Ah yes sorry piggy, still seems lower than new stories I've seen linked. I guess some people were support staff (or didn't tick the right ONS 'box').

noble completely agree. I re read my post and it sounded so cold. Every single one is one more than there should be.

It is shocking that any education staff have died, and I definitely want each and every one of them to be treated as a tragedy. And I'd like to see the data about long covid too, as that's what I'm most concerned about for myself and my department. None of us are very likely to die, we aren't old enough, but we might be more likely to get long covid.

My head sent us a video briefing today, and my goodness he's aged about 10 years since Christmas. He looks awful, and so down and depressed, I'm actually worried about him. Apparently there are several staff who have tested positive. Obviously we don't know who they are, unless we need to know, but I hope all of them are ok.

RigaBalsam · 25/01/2021 14:51

My school has just invited another 30 kids in. Honestly I can't believe it.

SansaSnark · 25/01/2021 15:08

The death rates are obviously shocking for care staff.

It would be interesting to see how death rates compare for each profession compared to a normal year.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 15:12

As predicted thread just sticking boot in to teachers which is really nasty whilst professing to care about the lowest paid but not actually naming the top category...

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 25/01/2021 15:25

Posted this on the wrong thread -

I don't understand, how can female secondary teachers with a death rate of 21.2 per 100,000 not be statistically significant different from other professions with a death rate of 12.8?

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 25/01/2021 15:31

Absolutely awful rates here - you would have thought these places had masks, social distancing etc. Maybe those don't have as.much effect as thought?

Because they will tell you they shouldn't be compared against other professions. Not fair or valid apparently. Obviously we are not as worthy or protectable as other professions and should be content not to die in droves like nurses and careworkers whilst martyring ourselves for the Greater Good.

So much squabbling on that thread and minimising of the deaths of 139 teachers. FFS. Angry.

I do hope the unions hunt down a month by month chart...

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 16:00

The ONS study does compare to average deaths 2015-19 I think.

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 16:01

@Piggywaspushed gets the 🍰

hedgehogger1 · 25/01/2021 16:07

How is it not even February yet

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:19

It's Burns Night! Whisky Cake welcome! who knew MN cared so much about factory workers and chefs....

Where does it do that January?

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:24

DF eventually got his first jab today. 80. No spleen. No rush, Scotland, no rush.

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 16:28

Do what piggy?

Did we spot this letter for the Office for Statistics Regulation to ONS - Schoolsweek had an article about it on Friday. Unfortunately, although it's telling the ONS how they should present info in future, it would have come too late (presumably) to affect today's report!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 25/01/2021 16:37

I've had a good afternoon rewarding myself for marking crap pieces of writing by having a rage on Twitter in between each one.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 25/01/2021 16:38

Am not going to look at any teacher bashing threads on MN by the way - a lot of bitches on those, and lots with not many brain cells or much empathy. Not representative of real life. Wouldn't take advice from any of them, so won't take criticism either.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:39

Compare to average deaths january. I am a bit confused by some of the data. It is making my head hurt. It is not helpful to us educationalists that they (ONS) have focused on us. I am sure police, firefighters ,etc would also like their figures.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 16:40

God, yeah, ONS have been awful. The PHS report is so good by comparison.

They do what they are told to do by HM Gov, it seems to me.

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 17:23

Oh right piggy, if you click into the datasets (spreadsheets) they have columns for male deaths, female deaths, five yr average, and those due to Covid and also all cause.

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 17:23

Think it was tab 8 or 9.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/01/2021 17:24

You know that thing about children not spreading covid? 18 of the 31 cases they had at home by this morning were school kids or staff, aparently. Potentially there’s a big non-school reason that might explain it. And how it is 7 schools, not just 1.

But given how little community spread there was previously (although not as little as they thought) it can’t really be explained away by saying it’s all individual children brining it in from home.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 17:31

Still can't see it for looking , partly because the table columns don't have headings.Never mind...

JanuaryChill · 25/01/2021 17:31

Absolutely rafals.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 17:33

Got it! I am surprised by how many deaths there have been of these working age people of 'not covid' tbf.

Piggywaspushed · 25/01/2021 17:35

Not to be too ghoulish but it does look like deaths of female secondary teachers are quite a lot above average, which is not especially true of males, and not necessarily seen in other occupations.
