You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Yes surprisingly so @TheHoneyBadger
Grr Piggy hopefully that's your 3 problems ( and the boiler turns out to just be a noise!)

I'm just wondering how many are going to engage with home learning properly.

I also have a little one with hearing difficulties and a 1:1 TA to think about- so the more visual I can make it the better!

twinkletoesimnot · 23/11/2020 07:04

@MrsHamlet that's interesting

I was sent home to isolate as a close contact on Friday and developed a cracking headache yesterday afternoon, which hasn't gone away overnight. I wonder if I should get a test (feeling ok otherwise)

MrsHamlet · 23/11/2020 07:07

@twinkletoesimnot might be worth it. It's definitely on my list (along with fatigue!)

Danglingmod · 23/11/2020 07:10

I think so, Twinkletoes. Especially if you're already SI as you're not causing cover implications by getting the test.

NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 07:16

Hello everyone, not able to come on as much at the mo juggling self isolating kids and remote teaching. badly

But - we saw an nhs manager friend yesterday who told us half the population would be vaccinated by early spring. Then this has just popped up. So, as long as we can avoid the shitter a bit longer, hope is on the horizon:

Covid-19: Oxford University vaccine shows 70% protection https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55040635

Having said that I know far too many teachers with it now. A few suffering quite badly Sad and a gaslighty bbc report about "what's your risk" has massively pissed me off this morning.

I have a hearing impaired student in one of my classes and he has a bit of kit that I wear around my neck so he can hear me. I'm presuming he can do similar with computer sound and there's less background sound and interference.
NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 07:35

👋

Omg skimmed that thread by you nobel. Brilliant thread. But omg. Angry

My twopenneth; an unrelated to Covid ons "risk of infection" chart puts nursery and Sen teachers at the same level as care workers, primary a little lower and secondary quite low. Now we know the actual risk in secondary is higher with Covid, I'm unconvinced it's any different in primary and Sen/ nursery it's just that it's easier to limit the total number of contacts and how bubbles work. So a sort of cancelling out. But that doesn't exactly lower everyone's risk.

My clunky visual maths says we are at the same risk as careworkers, especially due to high contact and zero ppa.

Sen schools are being hit extremely badly as are staff. There's not many locally and I know if 3 that had to fully close at some point since sept.

The whitewashing of this as atrocious.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/11/2020 07:36

Guess what today’s assembly is? Yep it is masks, hand washing, one way systems and SD. School trying hard to stay open given so many schools near us have closed year groups. I suspect we should have already but SLT keeping schtum

Appreciate I may get flamed for this but I'm not sure I would want a vaccine in the the short to medium term. Not about conspiracy theories but for example I tend to opt for medicines that have been around for a long time and have lots of data on long term effects etc.

I've had health problems that have required long term treatment and have varied treatment options and I've actively researched and made decisions about what to and not to take.

I've rejected options that haven't been around long or don't have much data for that off label use etc.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 23/11/2020 07:39

One of the students said he would not have the vaccine in case it made him infertile. The opinion being that the vaccine will kill off the human race

TheHoneyBadger · 23/11/2020 07:43

For the record ds has had all vaccinations bar the hpv one and I'm not an anti vax nut job but I am selective about what I put in my body after a couple of horrible reactions to eg hormonal contraceptives and a particularly vile antibiotic.

It also depends if it's just disease modifying ie you won't get to sick but you can still contract and pass it on or it genuinely immunises and therefore protects others. That would be a big factor in my decision.

NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 07:48

I think many would feel like that.

Worth noting that the sars vaccine was developed in 6 months and the Ebola one in a year.

The majority of the length of time taken around vaccines is red tape and funding.

NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 07:52

And yes I avoid hormonal contraceptives and anti depressants after horrific experiences with both.

Viruses enter the body and change dna too. So many illnesses are caused by viruses.

An example of how vaccines can be doubly protective is that the rota virus vaccine has been shown to reduce risk of developing coeliac disease. (It's a live one though and probably different.)

I have more worries about micro plastics to be honest.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/11/2020 07:55

For sure. I'm not saying it's entirely rational and if it was genuine immunisation that would stop me catching it and passing it to others I'd most likely settle on having it.

If it was only going to lessen the severity of my infection and I could still be infectious but perhaps not even realise because I had very mild symptoms then I can't see me having it.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/11/2020 07:56

I'd certainly be dragging my parents to go and get it though.

twinkletoesimnot · 23/11/2020 07:57

I have that speaker thingy round my neck in class too Honey.

Mine are only little (year 3/4) so she still needs quite a bit of support too.

Augustbreeze · 23/11/2020 07:59

🏹 everyone.

twinkletoesimnot · 23/11/2020 08:00

And FWIW dh and I were just having a very similar conversation about vaccines.
I'm just not sure that I want it.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/11/2020 08:03

@Augustbreeze

🏹 everyone.
And also with you 🙏
MrsHamlet · 23/11/2020 08:06

The news on the one I'm in the trial for is that (in monkeys!) it seems to prevent it being passed on as well as preventing the recipient from getting ill. Which is a huge positive if it's true for humans too!

SaltyAF · 23/11/2020 08:15

Education staff here have been offered asymptomatic testing, which I'm pleased about. I'll get one before we break up perhaps, not that that gives my ILs any real guarantees.

SaltyAF · 23/11/2020 08:16

Also I've finished the marking too - didn't get out this weekend!

MrsHamlet · 23/11/2020 08:22

@SaltyAF do you want some of mine??
