You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

How awful for your friend Riga.

Saucery · 14/11/2020 10:37

So sorry for your friend, Riga. The asymptomatic nature of this virus is the most insidious and worrying thing about it. If you have flu, you know. If you have a bad cold, you know. You can try and work round caring responsibilities etc because you know you have something.
With this....not possible.

RigaBalsam · 14/11/2020 10:51

Thank you all. It is just so horrible.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/11/2020 10:58

@Danglingmod

That old chestnut makes me laugh so much. That, and struck by lightning. I have given a disproportionate amount of headspace in the last few months to wondering if there is also a media blackout on deaths by lightning, since I have never seen evidence of this massive statistic.
I’m still disappointed that when PHE changed the stats they didn’t also release the number of people killed by a bus after testing positive for Covid. It would have been an epic piece of trolling.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/11/2020 11:04

Liverpool - my friend is a nursery teacher there. She is going for weekly tests, as are all of their staff. In the first week, 6 staff at her nursery were found to be asymptomatically positive, closing lots of bubbles. In the second week there was another one, closing another bubble. Kids aren't being tested. She said though, that apart from the person in the second week, all the others were only in their bubbles - not in contact with other adults in the building.

Flagsfiend · 14/11/2020 11:20

@RigaBalsam Flowers that's so awful Sad

The only stat I know about lightning is you are more likely to be struck by lightning than win the lottery, however the chance of either is very small, think about 1 in 14 million for the lottery (just checked and that was under old 49 ball system, I didn't realise it had been changed).

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 11:21

It is totally crazy how some people can have covid and literally no symptoms and other people have it with such devastating outcomes. As a pp said, that's what makes it so difficult to deal with - if you knew you had it, you could take precautions.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/11/2020 11:29

I think that’s the same with flu though. It can range from asymptomatic to ending up in ICU. We’re just less aware of it because for various reasons it has less effect on healthcare services than than covid.

noblegiraffe · 14/11/2020 11:33

I don't think I've ever heard of asymptomatic flu. I guess I don't know much about flu transmission at all.

SmileEachDay · 14/11/2020 11:36

Sorry about your friend Riga. :(

DollyMixtureLulus · 14/11/2020 11:42

I’m so sorry Riga. Terrible news.

WhyNotMe40 · 14/11/2020 11:51

I don't suppose anyone else has had a look at the Zoe Covid data - in areas not in tier 3 there is a very obvious dip/plateau and resurge around half term / return to school.

CallmeAngelina · 14/11/2020 12:10

Asymptomatic flu?!
Surely not!

eitak22 · 14/11/2020 12:13

DH test was thankfully negative - the guilt this week has been eating me up if im honest.

Possums4evr · 14/11/2020 12:15

I'm sorry about your friend's loss @RigaBalsam that's so sad. I'm sure her gran wouldn't have swapped the times spent being cared for by her granddaughter though for a lesser risk of Covid. It's all so hard.

Keepdistance · 14/11/2020 12:15

That's awful Riga, so sorry for your friend.

So hard to shield them completely though as most people especially older ones need to see hcp etc dentists/flu vax.

It is somewhat worse in nursery and primary as everyone thinks they are ok as there are 'no cases' at least horrible as it is secondary everyone realises the risk as i assume most have had cases now.

Nursery staff often seem young so they are also less likely to have symptoms.

Possums4evr · 14/11/2020 12:16

I got a negative result back incidentally, at around 11 last night - didn't spot it as it was in an email not a text like last time. Usual thing of being relieved but also knowing it's just "for now".

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/11/2020 12:23

www.nhs.uk/news/medical-practice/three-quarters-of-people-with-flu-have-no-symptoms/

Asymtomatic flu. Along with mildly symptomatic flu. The thing about the difference between a bad cold and flu being that with flu you can’t get out of bed is mostly rubbish.

eitak22 · 14/11/2020 12:27

Just caught up on posts.

[Flowers] @RigaBalsam I am so sorry to hear about your friend. What a horrible situation for your friend.

That's what terrifies me so much, giving it someone without knowing. Partly why DH and I have decided on Christmas on our own this year.

Hercwasonaroll · 14/11/2020 12:41

Riga so sorry for your friend and you. What a heartbreaking story.

Young colleagues who have tested positive are now massively suffering. Luckily the staff with existing conditions seem to have made it through OK, it's hit the young males hardest.

Saucery · 14/11/2020 12:51

Same with my colleagues, Herc but we don’t have any males to compare with. There are some Dads who have had it and I haven’t heard of any more severe outcomes yet for them.

Asymptomatic flu info interesting, thank you, Rafa. I consider myself to have only had ‘proper’ flu once, at Uni, when no doubt my lifestyle contributed to how ill I was, but I suppose not every ‘cold’ since then has truly been a cold.

RigaBalsam · 14/11/2020 13:05

I appreciate all the kind words all. I love rhis thread. Best on Mumsnet. Thanks all. Feel quite teary.ThanksThanks

CallmeAngelina · 14/11/2020 13:09

Well, you learn something new every day! I stand corrected on the flu thing.

MrsHamlet · 14/11/2020 13:30

Well, I'm a gallon of blood lighter, I've been stabbed in both arms and I know have a normal BP and heart rate.... whether I've been vaccinated or not I'll only know in a year!

Saucery · 14/11/2020 13:37

You absolute ⭐️! I feel quite ashamed I passed on the opportunity.
