TA salaries

Realistically, what is the take home pay for a full time TA at your school? I am contemplating a job as one as a way in to a school I would love to teach at eventually but salary hasn’t come up yet. I know it’ll be a huge pay drop but would like some ball park of what is reasonable.

TA salaries vary according to qualifications. What level...1, 2, 3 or 4 (HLTA)?

Lots are offered very part time in my area at about 9k a year.

SE London (includes Great London weighting) - equivalent full time salary is approx £21,000.

But as school year is 39 weeks, you have to divide by 52 and x 39 = £15,750.

But that assumes a 36 hour week and most full time TA jobs are 30 hours so divide by 36 and x30 = £13,125.

This will be divided into 12 monthly payments so you get paid in the summer holidays.

I live in the south west and its not very highly paid, around £8.90 an hour and 'full time' is only actually around 30hrs a week unless you do wrap around provision. We get paid about 39 weeks a year but divided into 12 monthly payments so although you get a wage in school hols its basically money thats been held back from previous months. (Hope this makes sense. I take home £890 a month - my teenagers get paid better at the local supermarket) I believe it is better paid in other areas of the country.

Ok, thank you. Yes, terrible pay! I also only want to do part time. I will wait and see what they offer (if I get a job!).

I pick up around £1200 a month in the Midlands working 32.5 hours a week.

About £13K for 30 hours per week

Salaries are insultingly low. I didn’t even earn enough to meet the tax threshold when I was a TA full time through agency. I had to work through every holiday to have any chance of a nearly reasonable disposable income.

Full time would be £18,000

Just heard back from one of my applications and I haven’t even got an interview. 😂 It’s for a Year 3 TA role and I taught year 3 for years but clearly not what they’re looking for. Onwards and upwards!

Sorry to hear that. I think sometimes schools don't like teachers being TAs as they are worried that they're just doing it as a stop-gap and so won't stay long or that some teachers feel threatened by having another qualified teacher in their class.

Sometimes there is already someone lined up for the job, previously known to the school, and the application process is just a formality. Good luck with your other applications.

Our TAs are on just under £11 per hour. SE London...

I was a TA 5 years ago before I became a teacher again. I was on 23k
My friend is still a TA think she is still on 23.5k

I’ve got a job! The salary is fine and expected - I’ll take home just under £1000 a month based on three days a week.

Wow, unless you are working 10 hour days that is an incredible salary!

It’s an 8.5 hour day. I’m a qualified teacher and they’ve put me at their highest level which I’m grateful for.

Full time (8.35-3.30) take home pay around £800 every month. That’s on about £9 ph .

Level 4 (HLTA) around £1000 pm take home.
