You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

And it looks like we are going in tier 3 here. Guess can't see my sister any time soon.

noblegiraffe · 29/10/2020 18:33

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news but those graphs are actually a rosy version of reality.

The last column, the alarming one, represents preliminary figures which are an underestimate. Compare the previous week’s estimate for week 42 column and where the data actually ended up in this week’s 42 column and think about where this week’s data will be when it’s all in.

Yes, I spotted that, too...

Oh!!! This isn't good.

I have 8 hours a week with year 10 (2 classes), 8 hours a week with year 11 (2 classes again), 3 hours a week with year 12, and 2 hours a week with year 13. So that's a grand total of 21 hours a week with the yeargroups with the highest numbers. And a poxy 1 hour a week with my lovely year 7 class. Delightful.

On a separate note, what would you think if part of the information about a new pupil in your class is that "female staff, when conducting 1-1 interventions with this pupil, must ensure they are in a public space, with a clear distance between the teacher and pupil"

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/10/2020 18:40

@Piggywaspushed

Other than the school's website, I cannot find any reference to the poor teacher's death in nay news outlets or on Twitter.

So, people can keep on denying, I guess.

Poor woman.

I'd seen it on facebook.

I'm not surprised it's not been more widely published. I'm watching the Welsh news now to see if it's being reported, but they don't tend to report any teacher cases, do they? It goes against their saying how low risk schools are(n't).

noblegiraffe · 29/10/2020 18:42

I would think I wouldn’t be doing 1-1 interventions with that kid who has clearly made allegations in the past.

SmileEachDay · 29/10/2020 18:42

I’d think the pupil had made historical allegations of some sort.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/10/2020 18:44

@DrMadelineMaxwell

It's made the news here in Wales that a teacher named Angela Stanton from Aaron Taf high school has died from cirinavirus. Very sad news.
Apologies for shocking lack of notice of the autocorrect messing up the Welsh school name! Afon Taf, not Aaron Taf.

Coronavirus typo all my own work though.

And no mention on the news at all. Sadly.

I'd think that the child has been known to make false allegations, and I'd want to know what they looked like before being expected to teach them.
We had a female student some years ago on a managed move who'd come from my previous school. No one was told about her history. It was a matter of days before she'd accused a colleague of touching her. It was horrendous for him.

Hercwasonaroll · 29/10/2020 18:45

I would not be doing any 1-1 interventions.

SmileEachDay · 29/10/2020 18:52

The other possibility is that the student has been abused and is very anxious about close contact.

Either way I’d have a chat with the DSLO.

ohthegoats · 29/10/2020 19:00

I would avoid any 1-1 intervention with that child. Although I once had a child handed to me with similar warning - she ended up being one of my favourite pupils ever.

TheHoneyBadger · 29/10/2020 19:02

Not as worrying as when a child mustn't be left unsupervised with younger children. It would be nice to unknow some things.

Went to eat at my parents and taught ds to play bridge. Think my dad in particular has really missed ds. He used to stay there every Friday and the two of them are really close. My mum can happily live with her mass and prayer group and endless tv viewing but my dad is climbing the walls I think.

He'd happily sod the risk and have his life back despite being the most vulnerable of us: limited lung capacity following a collapsed lung and uses all sorts of inhalers now and antibiotics and steroids for even a hint of chest infection, prostate cancer post chemo and mid 70's.

Felt very strange to realise it will likely be Christmas before we see them next despite about half a mile away. Unless schools go online I just can't risk seeing them.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/10/2020 19:16

I would not be doing any 1-1 interventions.

This was my immediate reaction. But then, the rest of the information we have about him means that he should be on every intervention list going. I also thought that obviously in the middle of a pandemic I will not be getting close to him, as I'm not getting close to anyone else.

Interesting that you all concluded that it was historical allegations. That wasn't my immediate thought, that came as an afterthought.

noblegiraffe · 29/10/2020 19:17

Can you get male teachers to do interventions?

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/10/2020 19:20

And nobody is willing/able to tell me anything more, as it's all confidential. This is his "fresh start".

SmileEachDay · 29/10/2020 19:21

You need to know if the risk is to you or him (in terms of his emotional welfare).

I’m a DSLO and would have no problem sharing more information about this in the context of a teacher trying to plan intervention.
In fact, I have done on several occasions.

MrsHamlet · 29/10/2020 19:21

MrsAD I suppose we make assumptions based on experience - I can still remember the horrified look on my colleague's face as he came into the office to collect his stuff and leave. We didn't know then what had happened, and didn't for a long time after.

SmileEachDay · 29/10/2020 19:21

Ah ok. Cross post.

Interventions 1:2 might be the way forward then?

CallmeAngelina · 29/10/2020 19:23

My guess would be historical allegations (about staff) or possibly, if you mention a "fresh start," maybe the female staff wouldn't be safe alone with him???

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/10/2020 19:23

@noblegiraffe

I'd love to get male teachers to do interventions, but he's coming into my class so is therefore my responsibility (for maths anyway). All our TAs are female as well. So if he's getting any interventions, it will be from a female member of staff.

I could really do with having more information about why this is necessary, but as I say, it's all confidential. I have ensured he's not sitting next to any girls on my seating plan either. I don't know if that's necessary, but I'd rather not find out the hard way.

Piggywaspushed · 29/10/2020 19:24

Interventions is a very newfangled word these days, on a side note. What does it even really mean?

Surely it should jus say ' don't find yourself alone with this child' rather than assuming a scenario.

MrsHamlet · 29/10/2020 19:26

Smile I don't know how you do it.
I've twice had students disclose to me, and once had the DSLO disclose on behalf of a child (because she wanted me to know something) and it shook me to the core.
It didn't help that on the most recent occasion the DLSO brushed me off on the basis that "mum knows and I do need to mark these books now". Yes? Well I need to get what I've just been told out of my head.

That’s not ideal. I hope you managed to find someone who could take that from you.
