You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if you have not used the hand gel. Close the door quietly on your way out and put your mask on.

We've had very stern directions over 2 m distancing each week and the end of last week. There have been issues in local schools that caused closure. I expect they'll return to zoom meetings next week.

WhyNotMe40 · 13/09/2020 08:32

So my dd1 who has had a cold the last few days is now coughing. Ditto for my youngest.
I know it's just a cold. DH knows it's just a cold. However I want to book a test, he says it's just a cold send them in to school.....
We've just had a row about it.

GravityFalls · 13/09/2020 08:42

The seagull incident was probably exactly what you’re all picturing! Very funny in the middle of a staff meeting held outside “because it’s a lovely day” Grin

That first cough you hear is such a heart-sink, isn’t it? Of course they need to get tested, they’ll get sent home from school anyway if you don’t , even when it’s obviously the same cold they get every year in September.

SaltyAndFresh · 13/09/2020 08:50

Well @WhyNotMe40, it's not really up to him is it? Neither will it be your fault if the test comes back positive. We had to do exactly the same last week.

There's a thread on active about people giving up on trying to get tests, and someone has said it's understandable. It is, to an extent, but it's us and other public-facing workers whose risk factor is ramped right up if people go about their usual business with coughs.

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/09/2020 08:59

Why I'm sorry :(

we've had exactly the same discussion, luckily not a row, except that ds hasn't coughed since first thing, and that was only a couple of coughs upon waking. He has mild viral asthma and so usually coughs a lot. He also hasn't been on his preventer as he's been completely normal without all summer (following asthma nurse guidance.) We have started it again now and will continue through the winter. So I'm not counting it as a cough.

I think if they're coughing a lot quite frequently, I would get a test. You'd risk them being sent home anyway?

Saucery · 13/09/2020 09:02

We had so many seagulls gathering after Break that we had a special Seagull Shit Kit to stop hysterical children (and staff) running through the corridors to the nearest sink.
The 6 months of hardly any children in the playground and now the staggered Breaks seems to have seen them off though. We were seriously considering hiring someone with a hawk to discourage them. It would also have been an ace, if gory, Teaching Point, should the hawk have been successful.

We’re pretty good at the spacing of staff, except in the photocopying room. I was trapped in that 4ft x 4ft space by someone who just wanted to ‘nip in’ to use the laminator. 🤦‍♀️

WhyNotMe40 · 13/09/2020 09:04

DH wants to see if they're still coughing tomorrow and send them in anyway.

Appuskidu · 13/09/2020 09:08

That Herald article (and the comments) have really annoyed me!

HipTightOnions · 13/09/2020 09:26

There is a school-hawk-seagull-scaring service!

They came to us a few times last year and it was wonderful to see the bird soaring and swooping around the playground.

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/09/2020 09:36

special Seagull Shit Kit Grinlove it!

How much are they coughing?

Dd1 is coughing quite a lot - about every 10 minutes. She's also losing her voice and a bit under the weather. Earache as well. It's a dry cough.
Youngest is just a river of snot and chesty cough about once an hour.

WhenSheWasBad · 13/09/2020 09:44

Such a great idea. I saw a guy doing this a a theme park to scare off pigeons. Fascinating to watch.

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/09/2020 09:45

Why who got it first?

Unfortunately with that amount of coughing I think she'd have to be tested.

Sureitwillbegrand · 13/09/2020 10:04

DD1 has has stomach pains for a couple of days but none of the key symptoms. I have a sore throat like swallowing razors with occasional cough. I have just woken up to hear DD2 cough and she also has a sore throat. I have managed to book a walk In test for this afternoon for all 3 of us. I don't think it's anything but I have to be cautious DH thinks I'm over reacting!

Mistressiggi · 13/09/2020 10:19

I sent a still-coughing child back to school but he had his negative test (which I sent to the school) I would not like to send a symptomatic child in without confirmation they weren't positive. School would have every right to send them home.

Danglingmod · 13/09/2020 10:37

Stomach issues are one of the main symptoms in children. It's just the govt don't want you to know that, for some reason Hmm.

Fingers crossed for all symptomatic staff and children on this thread that you can get tests easily. Flowers

Augustbreeze · 13/09/2020 10:56

Welsh Government has said no one will be fined for keeping a child off school for the first half term (notice copied on a Post on Fb)

DollyMixtureLulus · 13/09/2020 11:00

The Seagull Shit Kit has made my morning Grin

Piggywaspushed · 13/09/2020 11:03

If they still have symptoms, you are not meant to send them in, even with a negative test...

DollyMixtureLulus · 13/09/2020 11:06

If they still have symptoms, you are not meant to send them in, even with a negative test...

We have been told the exact opposite 🤯 that someone with symptoms is more likely to be a ‘true negative’ and can come back.

noblegiraffe · 13/09/2020 11:11

I thought you could return with a cough (and lack of smell/taste) even if you had covid (so long as you were 10 days past symptoms developing) because those symptoms can go on for ages.

Mistressiggi · 13/09/2020 11:11

I followed a Scottish guidance from Jason Leitch exactly - fine to send in with a cold etc as long as well enough to be in. Test if one of the three symptoms.
This contradicted some earlier advice from our local area that said to keep at home till 48 hours after all symptoms had gone.
