You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

Thanks herc. I’ve never been told I needed to check it or had any communication about it.

I have no choice but to pass it to bm as, as you say, it’s her job.

And breathe and accept that school is never going to let me pass threshold

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 06/08/2020 14:11

Glad you are getting sorted @TheHoneyBadger TPS will only deal with your employer for corrections. Your Business manager is paid to get these things right and it definitely is not trivial wanting to get it sorted. KOKO

@minisoksmakehardwork we theoretically have an on call system to remove students from the classroom. In reality, SLT like to play the fun "ignore the phone" game and it can be a long time before they appear. Isolation has space for three students so that's bring moved to the library! As the library is in my remit, I have some serious issues with that.

And my student with 1:1 support isn't allowed His support in the classroom. So that's going to be fun! He and I understand one another, but I'm sharing the class next year and I know he's going to run rings around her.

TheHoneyBadger · 06/08/2020 14:12

I asked in our online staff meeting whether they’d be reinstating ‘patrol’ and staffing it to ensure prompt response for students who need to be removed. Doubt that improved my popularity either Grin but it’s going to be hugely important

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 06/08/2020 14:15

Bugger me! Now we have someone harping on about going back without a canteen. Poor things might have to use Starbucks.

They are lucky they are allowed out. I bet they have ladies loo nearby.
These office workers have the life of luxury 😂

It could be worse. It could be another school thread banging on about the lack of food choices in the canteen.

But we may have to wait till September for those.

I suppose if nothing else it shows that people will always find something to whinge about.

minisoksmakehardwork · 06/08/2020 14:22

What on earth are their support going to be doing if they're not with their assigned pupil? (Hopefully not cleaning!).

I've been assigned to a 'bubble' with another LSA and they have identified which students in that area are under our remit. Still not quite sure how it's going to work but I guess we will have to assess which of the students need more help depending on the lesson or (I hate to say it) the teacher - and I know not all teachers write students off but lockdown experience has shown me that one of our less able students has been judged by at least 2 teachers as being a PITA. it's not untrue but their engagement in the lesson does sometimes hang on the reaction of the teacher to behaviour which is not within their control.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 06/08/2020 14:31

Lol that will be the next thing. Besides some schools having teaching staff clean the toilets we will have to whip up a two-course lunch of the day menu whilst catering for all allergies etc

We have students with things in their EHCP that aren't corona friendly. How are schools getting round that? Eg on student is allowed to leave and walk around the school for a mental break. Another is allowed to move seating plan.

Frlrlrubert · 06/08/2020 14:35

I too am wondering what the behaviour policy is going to look like. Latest email outlining teacher prep expectations mentions 'revised behaviour policy' but I haven't seen it.

When we had Year 10 in at the end of last term is was basically 'behave or be removed by SLT and sent home'. I assume it's going to be more detailed than that for full return, or SLT will be very busy and some pupils will end up not spending too much time in school.

Normally no homework/persistent poor behaviour = detention by faculty. Now? Detention in year bubbles? Detention rota for staff? The uncertainty is driving me loopy!

user1471525172 · 06/08/2020 14:51

@minisoksmakehardwork supporting remotely! We tested it when just year 10 were in and it was okay - but 27 other students instead of 3 might make it hard. Child had laptop, iPad and headphones. Support has the same. Child is in lesson and support can hear me through the iPad. He can also work on the child's laptop remotely. Child tells support what to write and support does so.
I can't see it working, to be honest, but I'm not prepared to say the child has to work in the support base, which is the only other option.
@Hercwasonaroll we have similar. They'll be permanently based in the support base, as far as I can tell.
@Frlrlrubert whole school detention after school in the hall. No break time detentions because no break time; no lunch time detention because lunch time is a mess. We're all on the detention rota anyway but that's the only after school thing we're doing!

TheHoneyBadger · 06/08/2020 14:57

We’ve previously had after school detentions for no homework. These are switching to detentions for behaviour. Those can presumably keep them in tracing groups and hopefully be manned by slt.

Before you couldn’t give detentions for behaviour just add the points to the system and too many points equals go on report. Whereas don’t do one piece of homework and you had an hour after school detention missing your bus and parents having to organise pick up.

Never made sense to me

A thread about the NSW study. Might be of use if anyone’s still trying to educate people who post it.

You can joke about it, but our friend with the dh head master in a free school who apparently was airlifted in to make failing schools pull their socks up) reckoned (before she was banned) that teaching staff would be rustling up meals in their lunch break for students, when they weren't cleaning toilets. She waited from home and made her own children wear full school uniform including ties, when studying at home. Strangely, she was banned, probably for being a lying goady fucker.

Mistressiggi · 06/08/2020 15:47

Oh! I can post again! If I was banned it was a short one Smile I feel a strange sense of relief, and promise not to tell anyone else to fuck off 😇

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 06/08/2020 15:48

They should be grateful they aren’t in France. They’d have to prepare 4 courses rather than just 2. Although it would probably edible enough that you’d at least get a decent lunch out of it yourself.

Sounds very similar to someone posting as 'The Headmaster's Office' on TES. Only this one is the head of a free school. His staff clean and serve lunches and the SLT has a fitness suite with hot tubs. Husband and wife team you reckon?

noblegiraffe · 06/08/2020 16:41

Ofqual have now said that A-level and GCSE results can be appealed by the school if the school has evidence that this year’s cohort should have performed differently to the school’s historical record. This may help rapidly improving schools.

Oh, that's a bit of a U Turn but also suggest the same concerns are coming up for us next week!

I still can't get a straight answer as to whether the algorithm is applied school by school or to individual subjects within schools...

minisoksmakehardwork · 06/08/2020 17:18

@user1471525172 - that certainly sounds challenging in a regular class full of kids. It wouldn't work for us either as we aren't strictly 1:1 and may have a couple of supported students in one class, all with differing needs plus helping out with other students as necessary. Ie those who should be under sen support but aren't yet.

But it's a workaround I guess...

user1471525172 · 06/08/2020 17:27

@minisoksmakehardwork he has A LOT of funding but usually his TA would also work with the other students with SEN because we simply don't have the staff (who does?!) They're going to struggle without that... and so am I! My TAs are my right hand, and it's going to be tough.

I thought I read very early on in all this that ofqual said they wouldn’t be able to check individual school performances in the given time. So have they don’t it by subject nationally or something maybe? I’ve no idea, but know our school our our results through loads of different systems and changed grades to be as fair as possible so if we’ve been downgraded as a blanket thing we will definitely be appealing our school!
TheHoneyBadger · 06/08/2020 17:33

Dear lord. 50 doesn’t want bubbles to ever burst now. We’re to keep working knowing there have been positive tests until we ourselves test positive. No way is she a teacher

phlebasconsidered · 06/08/2020 17:49

I'm dreading seeing one of my students again. I had him in a mixed 5/6 last year and i've got him again. He's a spitter, a runner and constantly out of his seat. He has a risk reduction plan which allows him to leave the room and requires handling frequently. If he is unhandable I have to evacuate the room around him while he trashes the joint. He did have a tent like corner to himself but that has gone now- simply no room, and no cushions.

Can't wait to see his revised Corona risk reduction plan. The Senco has gone strangely silent.
