Sept return

Has anyone been given any guidance on how marking of books and assessments will be done in sept in terms of touching books etc? Is everyone carrying on as normal or are measures been put in?

Why is there not clearer guidance on this?! It's like the DfE forgot we mark.

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2020 14:41

I think you answered your own question, Herc.

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 14:43

Haha, it'd be funny if they weren't just SO ineffective! I'm guessing this is what the August 13th update may provide clarifications on.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2020 15:13

Yes, I've used seneca before so will have a go with that. I had a play around on teams before and worked out how to set assignments-yay!

We have been told that we can live mark in class, we just can't collect the books in to mark as I suppose we are then taking them home/in cars and having them in contact with our households.

It'll be fine -just a case of getting used to new ways of working really.

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 15:28

Yes. I think whole class feedback on sheets will become the new normal THANK THE LORD!

It's definitely going to be very different.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2020 15:50

It certainly will be different but I am trying to look at possible positives in terms of me finding more efficient ways to mark/give feedback.

I've used plickers and my only tips are:

  1. Don't laminate them as they won't scan when the light hits them - I think it's better with matt laminate but it can still be tricky.
  1. Have a play when you first use them (and everyone is enthusiastic) to find any trouble spots in the classroom and make sure everyone holds them so they can be seen by the phone as you sweep past. E.g. I found that if they let the cards tilt back slightly they didn't scan.
  1. Have a test question at the start that just says 'show me A' to make sure they understand how to hold the cards and test your scanning. You can also check you have the phone the right way up - vertical.

Primary...we're just doing as normal. But I'm wearing gloves and/or sanitizing, and doing as much self-marking as possible. Also live marking using highlighter whilst children hold their books, standing behind them.

Smileforthecamera · 17/07/2020 21:32

It’s very interesting seeing how everyone is working this. We have been told to mark mostly we normal, we are fine to take books home and can wear gloves if we want but they aren’t needed. Concerns raised and completely ignored a little like we are trying to create trouble.

I asked (primary) and was told we could mark as normal, taking books home if we want to. I won't be, for my safety and the children's. I'll mark in school wearing gloves and wash my hands well before and after.

Hercwasonaroll · 18/07/2020 16:00

It's just so inconsistent. There is no specific guidance so schools are going by however cautious their heads/SLT are. Seems bonkers. Surely there's some evidence out there about how long it lives on surfaces!

noblegiraffe · 19/07/2020 20:48

Just thinking - those schools that have a 72 hour quarantine rule or whatever on marking books, you then have to quarantine it a further 72 hours before the kid can get it back?

Hercwasonaroll · 20/07/2020 08:48

Apparently so noble. Its almost like some of our SLT have forgotten what it's like to be a teacher. At least they did it once unlike the idiots in the DfE.

noblegiraffe · 20/07/2020 09:48

How do you get it back to the kid after 72 hours without anyone else touching it? Confused

Hercwasonaroll · 20/07/2020 09:53

😂 Literally no idea!! Why would SLT think logically?!?!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 20/07/2020 12:03

Homework will be submitted online.

Can’t see how books can be marked overnight with big class sizes
