Has anyone been given any guidance on how marking of books and assessments will be done in sept in terms of touching books etc? Is everyone carrying on as normal or are measures been put in?

Hearsay is that we've got a 72 hour quarantine rule.

I'll be ignoring it.

noblegiraffe · 15/07/2020 22:13

Can’t do 72 hours in maths as they’ll have a lesson the next day! Unless they do it on paper or have a separate book.

Finerumpus · 15/07/2020 22:15

We are only marking online. The pupils will keep their work and will upload photos of anything we want to mark. All homework will be online and we don’t mark class work usually.

Hercwasonaroll · 15/07/2020 22:19

Exactly noble. Plus me looking at misconceptions after 72 hours is pointless.
We have got a bonkers TT however so 2x2 hour lessons per week for maths.

cardibach · 15/07/2020 22:29

Well, practical or not I won’t be handling books at less than 72 hours quarantine. It isn’t safe or sensible and teaching is a job. Not worth risking my health. If they can’t come up with a safe way to do it well, it’ll have to be done less well I’m afraid. I’m an English teacher so have similarly regular lessons.

Tailrunner · 15/07/2020 22:34

All online for us. We are an iPad school so everyone is used to working online anyway and we are all getting iPad pens and keyboards to make it a bit easier/quicker. The kids will still use books so they get back to handwriting but any work to be marked will be done on the iPads or they can take pictures.

Finerumpus · 15/07/2020 22:37

Would you be able to find assessment methods that allow you to identify misconceptions within the lesson and then you could address them immediately or after a period of feedback within the lesson?

Hercwasonaroll · 15/07/2020 22:48

We've currently been told no mini whiteboards. We have no tech in school either. Feedback will be a challenge that's for sure.

ohthegoats · 15/07/2020 23:16

Marking like usual in terms of looking at books, but less time spent - marking policy changed.

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2020 01:37

What about Plickers? It’s (free) voting software but they don’t need a tablet, they just hold up a card and you scan the room with your phone.

You could glue the cards into their books.

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 05:24

Have you used plickers noble?

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2020 07:47

AFAIK we are able to mark as normal but books should not leave the school (unless the child is taking their book home which they will unless the teacher wants them for marking).

Before all this, we had started to look more at live marking and feedback and will continue to do so. So, I am planning my first half term lessons with live marking in mind which hopefully will mean I can give effective feedback in the lessons, check for misconceptions etc. but not have to keep taking books in. A-level, I'll have to collect in homework to mark can't do it in class because we are so pushed for time as it is Sad

We have been told no worksheets to be used in lessons and no textbooks either to reduce what is passed between teacher and pupil.

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2020 08:20

No, Herc, one of those things I never got around to. My friend did and said they worked - have you used them?

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 08:57

No, I was just after some real life experience. I've seen their promo stuff but so much edtech looks great but is rubbish in the classroom I didn't know if these were the same.

They could be a really good solution.

ValancyRedfern · 16/07/2020 09:16

We have a 24 hour quarantine

skylarkdescending · 16/07/2020 09:41

What are Primary staff doing?

Our usual policy is live marking during lessons and any additional marking/feedback completed at lunch/after school ready for lessons the next day. Most days I would have at least 4 sets of books to mark.

Haven't heard a thing from school, they seem to think we can cover ALL the new changes on our training day in September!

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2020 09:43

Worth a shot, I guess, Herc. It’s only the cost of printing the sheets. Teamed with Diagnostic Questions it could be really useful if we can’t walk around the class or use whiteboards.

phlebasconsidered · 16/07/2020 10:29

Mine are saying mark as usual but no books home but fuck that! I have to mark maths, english and topic every day and i usually do this at home as it takes hours. Don't think we should be doing it at all! It surely isn't safe? Our academy trust does not give a shiny shit about staff.

CheesecakeAddict · 16/07/2020 12:54

We have been told we are not allowed to mark the books until at least January, when it will be reviewed. I am an essay based subject so it's not really feasible 🙄

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2020 13:03

Aargh just found out we cannot take in books! Any work to be assessed gets uploaded to teams.

My head hurts Sad Need to fathom how to give hwk that can be uploaded to teams/emailed for my KS4/5 classes.

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 13:08

You can an write quizzes on teams.

What subject are you?

Noble I'll see what our MAT policies are, plickers may be very useful.

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/07/2020 13:38

Ooh I didn't know that @Hercwasonaroll thank you! I teach science, specialising in Physics.

Hercwasonaroll · 16/07/2020 13:45

Have you used Seneca before? Are there any online platforms you can integrate with teams?

I teach maths and we've used teams quizzes. You can make them multiple choice, or words via text boxes etc. It's pretty easy to use once you get used to it. Very similar to Google forms. It also means you can copy and paste feedback when pupils have made the same mistake.

Might be not very useful but I've started using desmos classroom too. You can use their graphing software, create lessons and stuff on there too. Not sure how much graph content is in physics sorry!

Malbecfan · 16/07/2020 14:18

I teach music and we've been using Teams since January - the massive learning curve hit at lockdown. I have written quizzes with embedded YouTube clips. If you write them with single option answers, they are self-marking. I haven't found a way of making them with 2 or 3 answers but I'm still learning. I set 155 of them last week for a year 8 listening assessment. It took around 30 seconds per kid to whip through them adding in the extra marks and the 3 sentences at the end. Much quicker than using books

autumnkate · 16/07/2020 14:32

We’ve been told to mark as normal and it’s fine to take books home. I have raised concerns and been dismissed.
