At the moment I am doing (as instructed) everything via showmyhomework and email. But I've had a heads up that it is about to change and we will need to provide lesson videos. (Currently link to oak national academy or BBC Bitesize lessons where appropriate)

I am a bit of a technophobe although I do try, and I'm very nervous about recording lessons.

Please help me out a bit and tell me what works for you?

Ideally I want to be able to video PowerPoints playing with my voiceover and somehow scribble extra notes? I don't want them to see me, and it needs to be prerecorded as my small children will not cooperate with live lessons.

I have a pretty ancient laptop with a touchpad which has Linux not windows (blame my brother who's laptop it was originally) I do not have a visualiser. Could possibly find a mouse from somewhere.. we use office 365 at school that I can log into from home.

Can anyone help me? Thanks Flowers

I haven't done it the same way as Dreamingofbrie, I can insert audio to each slide - insert audio/record audio.

Why not, the record in powerpoint will not work if you're using it in a browser - this is why I'm using screencastify (similar to the one mentioned before).

Whattodo121 · 17/05/2020 09:24

We’re a google school so I use google meets to do online lessons. You can share the screen with them and play YouTube videos etc and talk over the top of them and demonstrate tasks. Works well. And you can record the sessions too.

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 09:29

Ah that browser bit would explain why I couldn't get it to work. I thought it was just me being inept!
I don't know if we will have teams - we don't yet but it is being talked about.
Thanks everyone

Or use Teams. You have it if you have Microsoft. Click the 9 dot waffle in the left hand top corner of emails and it's in apps. Can set up classes and then record your lesson of any length. Students can then access it whenever they want. Can also put assignments in the class where kids can upload work and set quizzes which instantly mark and give feedback. Can mark using rubrics which save so much time. And can write detailed feedback on each question without the need to print. It has made all this so much more bearable. Can also do live lessons that are recorded for safety & have staff meetings. Just another idea.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2020 10:06

what : how do you play the YouTube vide etc to them on Classroom and talk over the top at the same time.

As a film teacher, this is exactly what I need to how how to do!!

I thought they would only hear the film through my mic and thus the sound would be really crap?

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 10:34

Ok I've just watched a couple of "how to" on teams.
Couple of quick questions - does it automatically record what you do in a meeting?
Can you chuck attendees out if the meeting at the end?
If it does record can you record a meeting (pre record a lesson) with no attendees then share it to your class later?

Thanks!

I feel such a dinosaur :(

Whynot, you're not alone, it's a huge learning curve for lots of us.

Sorry to hijack with a question, but is there a way of setting permissions so that students can't activate their phones and cameras? Some of mine aren't the best at following instructions!

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 11:05

Oh yes good question. I have some "interesting" year 9 characters in my sets....

I am using Teams for live English lessons a few times a week. But I've also recorded lessons and uploaded them using pretty basic software.

When I recorded lessons I was talking the students through an annotation of a poem so I pre-annotated it and covered these up with post-it notes. Lesson consisted of me removing post its and talking the kids through the info that was revealed. Worked well and VERY low tech.

MadameMinimes · 17/05/2020 11:17

Open your PowerPoint. Then go to Stream in Office 365. Click “create content” and select “record screen” and choose “application window” to select your powerpoint window and off you go. Once you are finished, if you have quizzes in Microsoft Forms that are linked to the lesson you can link them into specific point of the video so that they automatically appear for students to complete before moving on to the next part of the video. You can then share the link with students and they will be able to access it with their office 365 logins. I prefer to share my PowerPoints live in Teams but if you’re looking to pre-record and your classes aren’t all set up already in Teams then this is the best way to do it IMO. Stream is bloody awesome.

MadameMinimes · 17/05/2020 11:22

Piggy, for sharing a video you need to be using the teams app. Share the window with the video in and make sure you click the little box for “share system audio” and they will hear the video you are sharing as well as seeing it. They will also still hear you over the microphone if you talk over it. If you just want them to see the video without sound then just share the video without sharing the audio. If your video is embedded into a PowerPoint then, rather than sharing the PowerPoint directly on teams open it in PowerPoint and then share the PowerPoint window and click “share system audio”.

MadameMinimes · 17/05/2020 11:23

Apologies Piggy, I’ve just realised you were asking about google classroom and I’m talking about Teams. Blush

mumsneedwine · 17/05/2020 11:34

@WhyNotMe40 sorry went and did some work 😊. You record on Teams by pressing the 3 dots on the bar that pops up. Can throw anyone out and keep them out. And recording stays as long as want it to. If you'd like I can talk you through it - send me a message and I can call you via Teams 😊. It really is good - I'm 53 and I've quite enjoyed it. Lots of things we are going to keep using when go back.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2020 11:55

Thanks anyway! We don't use Teams .. anyone know if this exists on GC?

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2020 11:57

keirawhen you say covered with post it notes, how did you show them this??

keiratwiceknightly · 17/05/2020 12:20

Piggy - I have a visualiser (my own) and the software it comes with will record. Visualiser cost me about £50 a year or so ago.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2020 12:26

I thought you might say that. I am not buying a visualiser because I don't use them much at school tbh... although some people love them, they add noting to film teaching really so I have never felt the need. at school, I have a lovely huge whiteboard and total blackout which is great when I do use it.

My DH would have a fit if I went off and bought one!

Does anyone else not use school laptops that won't let them add any rogue software?

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2020 12:28

I suppose I could try and nab one from school, I guess.

The latest brilliant idea at school seems to be us teaching live all day in the school building!! What on earth is the point of that!?

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 18:42

Ok IT dinosaur here.
so I've been watching "how to reach using teams" videos on and off all day (around my own children and husband's work) and now I've finally got some child free time at the laptop.
I'm on teams, but I have no teams or channels or classes set up, and I don't seem to be able to have permissions to do anything much!
Please can someone tell me how I can easily (for dummies) record me talking over a PowerPoint that's in an office 365 browser?

OP posts:
WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 18:46

I don't have the record audio button in my PowerPoint - when I search for it it tells me to use the desktop version. Which I do not have. And have a Linux laptop that I share

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 17/05/2020 18:47

@WhyNotMe40 happy to talk you through it. Be free at 7. Send me your email by message

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 18:54

The 3 year old is now wailing at me because I won't let him tap at the keys.
Ffs this is why I can't get anything done

OP posts:
mumsneedwine · 17/05/2020 18:54

I'm here all night if you want a hand. Mine are a bit bigger 😊

WhyNotMe40 · 17/05/2020 18:55

Thanks mumneedswine but I think it's just not enabled in our school yet.
Need to find another workaround
