Anyone concerned after Boris' announcement? I'm currently teaching 6 and concerned that we'll be expected to go in soon. I imagine after the 12 weeks is up but I'm still terrified!

I think it's appalling and dangerous to let any pupils go back, let alone the younger children

phlebasconsidered · 10/05/2020 20:14

I am really panicky. I'm expecting a slew of emails from my trust any minute now.
I am looking at the union advice but honestly, it's not like the Academies listen to them anyway.

farfallarocks · 10/05/2020 20:22

Why appalling? Kids are really not at risk at all?

farfallarocks · 10/05/2020 20:23

If pregnant or vulnerable then teachers should stay at home but why appalling to let kids back?

phlebasconsidered · 10/05/2020 20:33

Farfalla are you a vulnerable teacher?
If you are then you know full well that unless you have a shielding letter you will be working in circumstances that put you at very high risk indeed.

stuckindoors77 · 10/05/2020 20:39

Honestly? I'm looking forward to it and I'm pleased for the sake of the kids and parents. We'll have to make a huge effort to be careful and I'm not sure how that'll look yet but on the whole, as long as nobody really vulnerable is forced back.... I'm happy!!

butIwontdothat · 10/05/2020 20:40

@farfallarocks Surely you're missing the point. Children may not suffer too badly with Covid-19, ( although there have been cases of children contracting and dying from it) but they carry it and pass it on. To teachers, who could pass it on to their families- some of who could be vulnerable.
They could also pass it to other children, who again could pass it on to their families.

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 20:40

"after the 12 weeks is up"
What 12 weeks? Pregnant women have not been advised to shield for 12 weeks. Only pregnant women who have "significant heart disease, congenital or acquired". Do you have significant heart disease?

No one in the shielding category should have to go to work, and I don't think teachers in the vulnerable category (which includes pregnant women) should have to go back either, but that's different from shielding.

Talk to your union.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 10/05/2020 20:42

Im v concerned as a vulnerable (but surprused not ti be officualky shielding) parent of a yr 6. There is no way YrR and Yr1 with be socially distancing. It will be v odd. Im so so careful on the few times Ive been out to be 2m away from anyone...

butIwontdothat · 10/05/2020 20:44

It seems like a case of The Emporers New Clothes.
Everyone is pretending that Covid-19 is not a risk to everyone. Some have a higher risk. But really, I think it's wrong to be complacent.

LatteLover12 · 10/05/2020 20:48

No one who is in a vulnerable group will be expected to return to work, that includes pregnant women.

Check your union's response.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 10/05/2020 20:49

Latte are you sure? Thats a huge percentage of the work force(asthmatics etc) . I thought only the shielding could officially refuse. Schools really wont be able to run properlyif all vulnerable dont come in (as we saw many shutting down before it was official lockdown.)

Those in the flu jab group, inc pregnant women, were told to stringently socially distance for 12 weeks. That ends around mid June.

farfallarocks · 10/05/2020 20:52

But it’s not a huge risk to most people at all, it really isn’t.

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 20:53

"Those in the flu jab group, inc pregnant women, were told to stringently socially distance for 12 weeks. That ends around mid June."

They weren't. Do you have a link?
I am pregnant and read all the guidelines carefully.

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 20:54

Ps we were told to follow the social distancing guidelines very carefully but no time frame was specified

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2020 20:54

I have a feeling that pregnancy will be excluded. stress in pregnancy can be damaging to birth outcomes.

hellosun20 · 10/05/2020 20:56

@NeurotrashWarrior @AnotherEmma I'm pretty sure that we were in his first announcement. That's the guidance I have been following...

hellosun20 · 10/05/2020 20:57

@AnotherEmma this is the reason that school haven't allowed any pregnant teachers in since that last week of March!

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 20:58

Yes that link just confirms what I said. Pregnant = vulnerable and should socially distance. At the time of that letter they still hadn't published information about the extremely vulnerable group for shielding.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2020 20:59

It doesn't state 12 weeks in that one, but was the guidance given.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2020 20:59

They had, it's on that letter in the annex

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 21:01

"It doesn't state 12 weeks in that one"
No it doesn't, because pregnant women were never told to do anything for 12 weeks, apart from pregnant women with heart conditions who were told to shield for 12 weeks. The vast majority of pregnant women have to practise social distancing until further notice. If you want more detail the RCOG guidelines are helpful. They advise more caution from 28 weeks for example.

butIwontdothat · 10/05/2020 21:01

@farfallarocks What data are you basing that on?
